Upon returning from the mission, Blair has the option to choose to initiate a romance with Flint or Rachel. Flint refuses to fly with him if he chooses Rachel, Rachel refuses to help him with his missile loadouts if he chooses Flint, and both are grumpy with him if he chooses neither.

x-com, metroid, sonic 3 and doom ii are close contenders though.

, Thursday, 19 February 2009 01:33 (seventeen years ago)

I voted Lolonization over DKC. Really in 1994 I was just mudding all the time.

Euler, Thursday, 19 February 2009 02:19 (seventeen years ago)

super metroid motherfuckers!

the next grozart, Thursday, 19 February 2009 02:22 (seventeen years ago)

XCom is weirdly forgotten - I think at the time it got better reviews than most of these!

Gravel Puzzleworth, Thursday, 19 February 2009 10:45 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for SWOS, as I was an Amiga user in 1994...

treefell, Thursday, 19 February 2009 10:48 (seventeen years ago)

damn, voted Donkey Kong Country but must have missed FFVI while scrolling down the list. That would really get my vote, possibly my favourite game.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony ft Phil Collins (jim), Thursday, 19 February 2009 10:57 (seventeen years ago)

"Sensible World of Soccer" – what a name!

I voted Earthbound bcz I owe it to god & country.

i'm shy (Abbott), Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:52 (seventeen years ago)

I wanted to play that Lunar game, but then discovered via the magic of the Internet that the CEO of Working Designs was a cock.

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:55 (seventeen years ago)

you are missing very little

x-com ufo defense is the best game ever but will not win this

thomp, Thursday, 19 February 2009 19:03 (seventeen years ago)

the lunar game is mediocre esp compared to silver star which is maybe the best RPG of all time and the maybe is only in there to make myself seem less crazy

lol @ wd drama i used to be soooo into that ish when i was 1st on the internet i think at one point i owned every single wd release and was constantly posting/reviewing/emailing oh man FAN ART it was horrible

HI DERE are you the other dude that <3s darkstalkers on here???

Lamp, Thursday, 19 February 2009 19:09 (seventeen years ago)

x-com ufo defense is the best game ever but will not win this

i liked terror from the deep better. but then i have a bit of a fetish for all things sub-aquatic.

, Thursday, 19 February 2009 19:22 (seventeen years ago)

Considering I revisit it every few years and went through a binge just a few weeks ago, it's gotta be X-Com, the unassailable classic. Deserves all the praise and fond remembrance it gets, infuriating warts and all - so aggravating that no one has significantly improved on its model or modernized it (both the tactical and strategy elements working harmoniously).

I didn't remember so many great games coming out that year though - Final Fantasy VI is incredibly close in my heart. Doom II, X-Men: COTA (voice actors from the cartoon!), Darkstalkers and Earthbound were really good too, and I liked Earthworm Jim. (I still haven't gotten around to playing Super Metroid after all this time :/)

(TFtD? Seriously? The sequel that's uglier than the original? With awful unfair extra unnecessary difficulty and those terrible ship missions? Ah well, I'll give it the cool semi-Lovecraftian angle points)

Nhex, Thursday, 19 February 2009 19:47 (seventeen years ago)

HI DERE are you the other dude that <3s darkstalkers on here???

YES I AM

srsly I was a Street Fighter fan but Darkstalkers kind of changed my life

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Thursday, 19 February 2009 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

yah i loved darkstalkers so much at the time i was way more into it than SFII i had like czn-level knowledge of that game and could play every character

even i couldnt vote for bomberman but its a really great game - the single-player mode isnt perfect and it relys too much on the same couple of tricks but the multiplayer is endlessly fun and the level design is pretty much a masterclass in making the most of limited resources. it'd be in my top 5 of these games for sure

Lamp, Thursday, 19 February 2009 20:47 (seventeen years ago)

what a year

cozwn, Thursday, 19 February 2009 21:00 (seventeen years ago)

i voted Earthworm Jim btw... probably not my 'true' favorite but i loved that shit when was a kid

my heigl-lohan girl (who's also latina and half-jewish) (cankles), Friday, 20 February 2009 02:25 (seventeen years ago)

wow this was totally during my decade or so of barely playing games at all. don't remember playing ANY of these.

s1ocki, Friday, 20 February 2009 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

I loved the shit out of all of these:

Darkstalkers
Donkey Kong Country
Doom II
Earthworm Jim
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Super Bomberman 2
Super Metroid
Super Punch-Out!!
Tekken
X-Men: Children of the Atom

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 20 February 2009 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

ha i thought i was going to be the only earthworm jim vote

vaginary & western (jjjusten), Friday, 20 February 2009 17:01 (seventeen years ago)

I pretty much played nothing but Doom II this year. Played it loads single player. Then set up a serial cable link between a 385 and a 486, and got it to run multiplayer, and played it loads more, shooting up my little brother. Then turned off the monsters, and used the levels to play hide-and-seek with my then very young sisters. GREAT DAYS.

JimD, Friday, 20 February 2009 17:26 (seventeen years ago)

If I had played it when it came out, Super Metroid. Unfortunately, by the time I got around to it a few years ago, I had already played the hell out of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and the GBA Castlevanias, so it kind of dulled the impact of Super Metroid.

Eleven-year-old me in 1994's answer is Donkey Kong Country.

I shall always respect my elders (Z S), Friday, 20 February 2009 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

super metroid takes this in a walk (even though most of the others are great)

ciderpress, Friday, 20 February 2009 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

i actually ended up playing super metroid after the GBA metroids, but it's still awesome.

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Friday, 20 February 2009 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

makes you wonder how high on the best year in gaming poll 94 would place? these are some impressing titles

name like king kong (sonderangerbot), Friday, 20 February 2009 18:34 (seventeen years ago)

haha my plan is to eventually do a poll of all the winners of these yearly polls maybe i should do a best year in video-gaming poll as well

you contemptibel nerd you yuppie fukkin homo (Lamp), Friday, 20 February 2009 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

Doom II
Super Metroid
X-COM: UFO Defense

^^^ my shortlist, since Sonic 3, while tons of fun, didn't really add much to Sonic 2, while Doom 2 was somehow the definitive Doom while adding almost nothing to the original game but a few monsters and new levels.

Super Metroid was really, really great but I've never felt any desire to do a second playthrough - maybe it's the frustration of the wall-jump? Whereas SOTN I at least played twice.

X-Com is AWESOME, pretty sure I've rambled about it on some thread already but boy what a great game. Sunk a weekend into it sometime last Fall and it was still great but the annoying things stuck out to me more than they used to. The difficulty curve is really odd - you can be poking along, basically doing fine and thinking you're working at the right pace, and then things just get brutal and crappy and it's all over. (Star Control 2 had a similar, though more dramatic problem.) If I had the patience to really undertake many consecutive stabs at X-Com campaigns I would probably eventually beat it, but it's a little like Civilization in that the early stages of the game get kind of tedious to repeat ad nauseum.

So it kind of has to be Doom 2 - the music alone would probably be enough but I just enjoyed the hell (ha) out of that game. No particular moments of unbelievable brilliance, just sustained fun all the way through. The "city" levels are maybe a little on the dull side but everything else is solid.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 21 February 2009 01:03 (seventeen years ago)

Shit, didn't see Final Fantasy VI. Hrm. That one is pretty darn good. But my heart lies more with shoot-em-ups than with random enemy encounters and haunted chests...

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 21 February 2009 01:04 (seventeen years ago)

I wanted to play that Lunar game, but then discovered via the magic of the Internet that the CEO of Working Designs was a cock.

How so? I remember Victor Ireland posting on Usenet occasionally, but I don't remember him being a cock.

abanana, Saturday, 21 February 2009 01:50 (seventeen years ago)

i got really annoyed when gametap sent me a 'free this week on gametap: X-COM' email and then it wasn't actually available. especially since i have already paid for it at least once. i also bought the (terrible) play by e-mail version.

i really like the difficulty curve in the first one. it's reactive to your performance, anyway: the aliens don't start throwing massive warcraft around full of little alien guys with big bombs and plasma guns unless you're taking down all the smaller craft. (otoh if you don't make a decent job of this the UN slowly gets bored with you and you die the death of a thousand budget cuts)

there was an x-com novel written, in russian, for the russian market.

DOOM 2 was my first exposure to the FPS and I played the shit out of it. Got a vote for it for the memories alone.

I remember always wanting to play XCOM, but I never got around to it. I'm sure I would've loved it though. Didn't play Super Metroid 'til several years later but man that was a great game too. One of these days I'll get around to Earthbound.

blanka burgers (circa1916), Saturday, 21 February 2009 07:28 (seventeen years ago)

Donkey Kong Country (for the spacey underwater level)
Doom II (long-service medal on mankind)
Tekken (for 12h sessions on weekends with weed & sweets)

meisenfek, Monday, 23 February 2009 23:34 (seventeen years ago)

How so? I remember Victor Ireland posting on Usenet occasionally, but I don't remember him being a cock.

This was much, much after the fact, actually; it was during the whole Magic Knight: Rayearth debacle and how he insisted that the fans wanted to pay $70 for a game no one other than him was particularly excited about several years after it stopped being relevant.

Wow, DKC even tying X-Com is a major ILG faith-in-taste bomb I didn't expect.

Nhex, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 01:06 (seventeen years ago)

It was a good year. I'm surprised nobody voted for WCIII; I woulda put that second after Metroid.

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 17:41 (seventeen years ago)

i am delighted that EWJ beat FF6

s1ocki kong country (cankles), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

FF6 is a game I sort of admire in the abstract for its ridiculous hugeness but never LOVED even as I was putting myself through it. Lots of great set pieces and sequences, great stuff to stumble on, but a little grayed-out in my mind. I guess I'm a sucker for aesthetics - Chrono Trigger is much dearer to my heart in large part just because it looks a lot cuter. (Secret of Mana, also, which I will freely admit I enjoyed less as a game than either of these.)

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 26 February 2009 06:02 (sixteen years ago)

wow, was this the most voted on of yr polls lamp?

one of the ones that mordy/a banana did got ~ the same # of votes but this has been the most successful of my non-KOEI related polls

it boggles my mind that for real adult humans tht that FFVI had this great, deep story that wasnt y'know super chromosome-deficient but then again he was a TREASURE HUNTER... not a THIEF!!!! but it was the disgraced general that stole his heart -_^. story for the ages...

i looked at this post for like 5 seconds wondering what the hell i was talking about

s1ocki, Thursday, 26 February 2009 06:49 (sixteen years ago)

Apparently all the games I played the hell out of in 94-95 actually came out in 93 (Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max, Sim City 2000, Ultima Underworld II... lol gurls etc). Has 93 been polled yet?

(Aw, you'd get some last-gasp-of-Amiga stuffs too like Fire & Ice and James Pond 3... and Settlers! OK, I think 93 was officially my favourite gaming year, after which I gave up on new stuff)

Super Metroid, DKC, XCOM, FFIII and Earthbound all in a single year. and lots of other good stuff as well. now THAT's amazing.

xp hey, something had to go so we could get Death and Return of Superman on the poll!

Nhex, Thursday, 12 March 2015 04:18 (ten years ago)

to be fair, a licensed beat-em-up, likely only ever played as a rental, and based on 'reign of the supermen,' is pretty darn '1994'
