Chipping an Xbox

Right, I've bought an original Xbox from my sister's boyfriend, for £30. And my plan is to get Xbox Media Center on there, then to use it for streaming downloaded tv and films across my network to my tv. So I need to chip it.

People who chip consoles all seem to charge £40-£50. It looks like I can just buy a chip for about £10-£20 though, then fit it myself. So what I want to know is 1) which chip should I get? There's loads of different ones and I don't really know what any of them do. And 2) how hard is it to fit a chip? has anyone done it?

just soft-mod it dude, it will cost you basically nothing and you don't need to open the box or soldier anything.

i've always wanted to try this. is ir true that, once you chip it, you can't play online?.

Kind of - you need to disable your chip when you log onto live, otherwise it bans you. I'm not too worried about that though, I don't expect to use live really anyway.

This softmodding might be a good idea, yeah. Sounds a bit of a faff to get the file from your pc to an xbox memory card though. Guess what I end up doing might depend on what version my console is, but I haven't checked that yet and can't at the moment because I left it in Manchester.

How dumb am I to think you were talking about damaging the plastic casing of the XBox EVEN AFTER READING THE FIRST POST?
