After a couple of runs through the demo I am liking this much more than any other recent PS3 shooters. Unlike Resistance 2, the enemy AI doesn't only focus on you, but sees the NPCs as viable threats; and, amazingly, your companions can actually take care of a few enemies as well. Graphically it is stunning, particle effects and depth of field and environmental damage all among the best I've seen.
I'm not in any hurry to get the full game (plate's still pretty full from the holidays), but am now looking forward to it when I get a chance.

I picked this up last night. Didn't play a ton because basically all I want to play right now is Street Fighter IV, just maybe an hour of single player and half an hour of multi. It seems pretty solid, first impressions are definitely much better than Resistance, if only for the graphics, which are really impressively detailed, though very brown and dark. It's very much a shooting game, and I didn't manage to quite get used to the shooting - for me it felt a little sluggish and a little difficult to aim - though admittedly I'm a little out of practice with using a controller for playing a FPS as I think the only shooting I've been doing this year is on PC with the more precise, easier mouse/keyboard set-up. I think since maybe the enemies are almost always far away, making it so far a little extra awkward getting the sight lined up for good shots? I will complain about the same stuff others have - the camera seems a little low for some reason - instead of being placed in your character's eyes, it seems to be in their chest - so you feel a bit like you're always crouching. The game's world is very brown, dark and grey, and well, I feel a little worn out of fighting my way through this kind of generic, been there many times before first person environment, even if the graphics here take it to another level, it still feels too much of the same ground. The game runs smoothly, except after loading, when it tends to hitch for a half second, just a nitpick, but it did take a little shine off.
Because I was struggling a bit with the shooting, multiplayer felt even more of a struggle, but I'm sure if I played more I'd get used to it. The maps I saw were (again) really impressive visually. The matches also seems to support 32 players and I noticed no lag. There appears to be five team based game types and when you set up a game you can select as many of those games as you would like, so for instance, you would move through a series of different types of games in the same game (kind of like the mode in Resistance 2 where you keep getting different objectives, but you're always playing against the other team, not AI). The multi also supports bots, so can be play offline, though I didn't try that out.
Anyhow, my overall first impressions were that it's a pretty solid FPS. If you're still excited to play games in the genre, you will probably like it, especially if you're a bit of a graphics whore. If you're a bit burned out on this kind of walking through grey worlds shooting dudes already, it probably won't rock your world.

― jamescobo, Friday, 27 February 2009 18:30 (seventeen years ago)
Played a bit more multi and got a little more into it - maybe after tweaking the control sensitivity a little more to my liking. Now I'm feeling it plays a lot like a SF Rainbow 6, minus the cover mechanic (single player has cover, but not multi). Weirdly the game only shipped with 8 maps, which doesn't seem like enough & so far I'm definitely not into it enough to pay for DLC. You also have to unlock additional weapons by slowly earning exp & those additional weapons seem like they may be considerably better than the default stuff.
― Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 28 February 2009 06:01 (seventeen years ago)
i had to change the sensitivity too. and the control layout. what were they thinking?
besides that i'm into this for sure. the enemy AI is GREAT.
― cutty, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 16:31 (seventeen years ago)
what's the control issue? too heavy?
you can basically change it to COD4 controllies right?
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 16:32 (seventeen years ago)
it was too heavy and sluggish on both the x and y axis
zoom/aim was mapped to the right thumbstick instead of L1 (L1 being melee attack) which is awkward? has any other game defaulted to that?
― cutty, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 16:41 (seventeen years ago)

^ Agreed - multiplayer is where it's at. Tried the new train map last night - lots of fun, it really changed the dynamics of each different type of match. And this thread is still impossible to search for.
― throwbookatface (skygreenleopard), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 15:42 (sixteen years ago)
I got fed up of the singleplayer game after about two hours and haven't touched it since. I'm always on multiplayer now.
The Killzone website is pretty good too - you can watch top-down replays of matches, and it's crammed full of geeky stats.
― nate woolls, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 15:58 (sixteen years ago)
I might try to get as far as I can on hard in single player, but we'll see how long that lasts. I still have to put some time into beating it on Normal (I'm fighting Radec right now). I hate the damn AI on my fellow soldiers, though. The idiot just follows me instead of covering me, drawing fire, or something else.

Finally getting into the multiplayer on this the last couple of days. The graphics are really astounding - much better than any other multiplayer game I've played, which is especially amazing when you consider it's 32 player games too.
I'm still having a little trouble with the aiming - I guess 'cause there's no aim assist? Though I usually do pretty good in matches. I love that you can search for games to play people your own rank. Have played a couple of matches in the higher ranks too and that's just unfair. I feel like the one map with the long bridges is too big. Occasionally the matches have some ridiculous choke points, partularly when the other team manages to basically trap a team at their spawn point. Obviously frustrating. And sometimes the objective you're assigned just seems impossible. But overall, I'm really enjoying it, and glad I decided to revisit - in fact, I've just bought the bundled six map DLC pack (which is on sale this week, I guess).
Any tips or strategy from people who have played more would be welcome. Is there a preferred weapon? When people invite you to a squad do you accept - I've been turning down squad requests 'cause I haven't wanted to plug in my mike. What are the advantages of being in a squad? There's already team speak, right?
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 27 November 2009 20:58 (sixteen years ago)
The best tip is to crouch down when shooting, your crosshairs will tighten and this means accuracy & recoil is diminished.
strafing isn't too effective but running to a position, crouching and firing seems to be the best way.
and stick to the main machine gun, it's the best all rounder.
being in a squad means you spawn at the team leaders position, so less running from your base to the firefight. plus a balanced squad can really help each other out and defend points. planning in playing a bit of this at the weekend, so friend me and I'll give you the know how.
PSN namein brackets.

i was just wondering, are people still playing this online?

I haven't played this for a while but I absolutely loved multiplayer and played it solidly for a few months in the summer. Think I'll give it a whirl on the weekend.
― nate woolls, Friday, 27 November 2009 21:58 (sixteen years ago)
xp - Yeah, I haven't had any trouble finding a game when searching by region and rank. If you search for "any" there's a bunch of results. By "rank," usually just a handful (I'm only around the 5th rank), but the games are usually full or fill up real quick. It's definitely not a ghost town.
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 27 November 2009 22:00 (sixteen years ago)
I just checked the online leaderboards and they seemed to say there were 27,856 unique players in the last 24 hours and 62,672 in the last week. Obviously not Call of Duty numbers, but solid enough...
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 27 November 2009 22:13 (sixteen years ago)
Also, 8 vs 8 matches are WAY more fun than the huge matches, although if you just want to kill a bunch of people anything works.
Jeff, I've found it's a more "tactical" (read: sluggish) game than COD4 - they're almosts opposites in terms of player control in the shooter spectrum. As a result, I've found there's more parity in matches than in COD4, and my general tactics are also different. You turn so slowly that if someone ends up behind you, you're always dead. I feel like my squad and I are more of a SWAT team then a nimble sharpshooting soldier ala COD4. I definitely encourage traveling with teammates and joining a squad for this reason. I can't say a squad won't be happy to have you if you don't have a mic - I feel like the only time I'm not let into squads is if they're bringing friends in or in clans. If you're on a shitty team and want to change, though, leave the squad or you'll be stuck with the team on the next round.
The aiming's tough to get used to, but the default rifle is pretty bomb. Tap the trigger repeatedly vs. just holding down the trigger and you can take down most anyone provided you can place the shots on their upper body/head. You'll see that the best players are kings at this. I don't think the zoom is too handy unless they're oblivious and pretty far away, otherwise the red crosshair alert is all you need. Other weapons and tips:
1) get into pistol-only matches so you can get your headshots/pistol kills and get the magnum enabled early on. It's SO worth it for the magnum as a backup weapon, and the training as far as sharpshooting will help a lot.2) In higher ranks, the huge machine guns are best used by crouching and tapping the trigger to keep from spraying all over the place. Good for defending objectives.3) Engineer is so nice all around, especially if you don't feel like aiming much. And always keep turrets up if possible.4) If you play the tactician (you'll get there soon if you're on the 5th rank) the spawn points are terrible important for your team. Place them well or your team will hate you for it, since you don't have a few secs of invulnerability when you come out. Spawncamping is a huge possibility, so be careful where you throw the spawn grenades. If it's an attack/defend game people usually prefer the spawn to go right by the objective and it turns into a killfest, but that's usually the only way to plant/defend the bombs. If it's during another match, though, be careful laying them down at any chokepoints or in enemy territory as it can get camped pretty easily, and your team will hate you for it.5) the sniper/scout is a very specialized role - if you're going for monster killpoints, this isn't the class to play, unlike Call of Duty. That said, it's a lot of fun to play as one and back up your team from across the map.6) The saboteur's disguises won't fool anyone in the higher ranks (esp if you're human disguised as the aliens) but the weapons are nice. The SMG is great for headshots since you can hold down the trigger and shoot accurate bursts, and the rifle is like a magnum with good zoom and quicker rate of fire (2 shots = DED).7) Rockets are for noobs, but they're effective.

this should be on the loading screen
― my opinionation (Hamildan), Saturday, 28 November 2009 10:49 (sixteen years ago)
Thanks for the tips. I played this a bunch on Saturday... mostly medic and feel like I pretty much got the hang of it. Still never accepted any squad invites but usually ended up in the top couple of scores anyway. Now that I'm kinda learning the maps I probably will start squading up though. I really like assassination mode (quite scary when you're the target). Feels great to survive. Bodycount is fun too, just for the change of pace & purity. The capture and hold sections though seem to just turn into cluster fucks. Sometimes that's fun, sometimes it's kind of on the annoying side. In general, I feel like some of the abilities people get ranking up, like mobile turrets and those fucking flying robots too often turn matches into complete chaos, especially on the mid and small sized maps. I feel like the game was actually better when playing at the earlier ranks. Would be cool if there was a way to play games set to vanilla, with none of the rank up bonuses (though with the different classes).
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 30 November 2009 19:37 (sixteen years ago)
I think I ranked up to far - suddenly this is the most broken and stupid multiplayer game I've ever played :(
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 3 December 2009 07:20 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah at some point with everyone good at it crammed into any of the mid- or small-sized maps, it just turns into this killfest. I'm thinking of deleting my game save and starting over, because now whenever I jump into a match, I'm 1) out of practice so I only die, then 2) improve, but realize most matches are all the same.
