MadWorld (buy it)

I searched and found nothing but Gary Jules/Tears for Fears threads and this game deserves its own thread.

so far it reminds me of both Jet Grind Radio (way more violent of course - it's pretty much more violent than everything - but w/ the same use of directional inputs [in JGR, it's "follow these cues on the analog pad, in MadWorld it's "move the Wiimote this like this] and a visual style distinct and fully-realized enough to count as substance on its own) and, of course, God Hand (the slightly clunky tank controls, the camera woes, the basic design principle of advancing by wrecking everyone's shit. admittedly MadWorld's kill-motherfuckers-creatively mechanic isn't anywhere near as deep as God Hand's seizure-inducingly deep combo system, but it's plenty of fun in its own right. also MadWorld isn't as invective-evokingly difficult as God Hand either, but I'm good with that and I presume my poor terrified neighbors are too). my only complaint is that I keep accidentally pressing the pause button while I'm wildly gesticulating w/ the Wiimote, but I guess it's not fair to hold game designers accountable for my spazziness.

and seriously, this game just looks SO cool; even without progressive scan I want to put it on the same level as stuff like Odin Sphere and that last Wario game for the Wii in terms of pure visual impact. watching the black-and-white levels fill up with red is just such a treat. the soundtrack's pretty great too - not to beat the JGR horse to death, but it's got the same kind of pastiche-driven energy.

and if all that wasn't enough for you, commentary (the premise of the show is that you're killing dudes as part of some dystopian game show - it's basically The Running Man: The Game) is provided by Greg Proops and That Dude Who Does The Voice Of Bender both cussing like Richard Pryor and just cutting loose. it does tend to loop so you'll get sick of it eventually, but for at least the first few times it's legitimately funny (as opposed to Video Game Funny).

tl;dr: if you have a Wii and don't have a thing against games with blood, this needs to be something you buy NOW.

I wanted to get this, but broke down and got Killzone 2 for that Monolith of a blu-ray player; should have waited for Madworld instead.

However, by the end of the week I wouldn't be playing it - PES 2009 for Wii comes out this week! Played last years for months and months and expect to do the same again.

If I loved God Hand, but found it way too difficult, would this be a decent purchase for someone who just wants something to pick up and play for a laugh every now and then or do you need actual skillz?

I haven't bought a game for my Wii since, oooooh, Smash Bros. No actually I tell a complete lie I've been playing Lego Star Wars to death with the gf over the last couple of weeks. Man I love that game, mainly because it is EASY and I am far too casual a gamer these days. My gf casually mentioned that she'd been playing it at work and was greeted with blank-eyed stares and the opinion that playing games over the age of 25 is "wrong". Surprising given that most people in her office are 22-24. I thought everyone was cool with gaming these days.

if you're an adult playing games on the wii you are probably some sort of pedo predator, apparently.

you'll love it. Mad World is basically God Hand (a) for people who thought God Hand was too hard and (b) with all the in-jokey stuff replaced with an immediately accessible aesthetic. basically God Hand : "Losing My Edge" :: MadWorld : "Yeah".

daaaaaaaaaamn. see now this gives me hope for the wii. srsly, this game is incredibly fun.

enough about boom blox what about mad world?

Point being, I hate all of you. (Lamp), Monday, 30 March 2009 18:58 (sixteen years ago)

ha yeah i haven't even opened boom blox yet. HOTD:OK is pretty cool, got frustrated because its super dark and i was trying to play it in the middle of the day - screen reflection unavoidable and i didnt want to bother pulling all the shades and going full on creepy dude that plays video games all day for the neighbors.

Madworld is the shit tho, played it for about 4 hours. it isnt really ever hard at all, at least up to the point where i am, but it is totally rewarding, lots of funny brutal shit to do. feels like a ton of replay value (announcers will grate, but i have already found the way to turn them down independently of the rest of the game soundtrack) the way that you can chain stuff is great. there are moments of dumb stereotype shit, but they actually make the effort to take the piss out of themselves at least once about it, and besides, in a game where you are rewarded for putting a signpost through someones head and pinning them in a tire before you shove them through a fan, a bit of over the top bad taste is generally expected.

songs are AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL tho, be forewarned, very idiotic.

oh and forks on a gameplay level (to avoid all the faults as intentional crap arguments) this is just miles and miles above NMH. like kind of not in the same ballpark in terms of fun that can be had. (to be fair, i should probably give NMH another go). this is one of those games where you are likely during the boss fights to smack someone in your vicinity with some wild flailing wiimove tho (i managed to rip the nunchuck violently out of the connector port and throw it across the room yesterday during one, so be forewarned)

one month passes...

so apparently the sales for this have been disappointing (66,000), so i imagine we're back to game developers shoving 40 different iterations of farm management and big headed avatared sports titles with minimal skill down our throats. LAME.

Nhex, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 23:25 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i dont really understand how this is selling poorly - its really fun, reviews were pretty uniformly good, and it seems like im not the only person that wants the wii to be more than a neopet simulator. what really kills me is (as mentioned upthread) this game looks really really good, kind of pokes holes in the "cant put a serious game on the wii because lol graphics" theory.

i bought it, played it for a couple of hours, realised that it wasn't for me & sold it on eBay. don't know how that last bit affects the ratio, though.

zappi, Thursday, 21 May 2009 06:34 (sixteen years ago)

I just rented it yesterday but haven't played it yet. I'll buy it if I like it.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 21 May 2009 11:50 (sixteen years ago)

I will not be buying this.

cozwn, Friday, 4 September 2009 00:21 (sixteen years ago)

Thread revival prompted me to pull the game off my shelf and finally give it a try, and I don't know... First of all, after playing for about thirty minutes the game crashed my Wii (which has never happened before that I can remember), and this was before a save point, so already that's going to color my impressions negatively a little bit... But honestly, I really wasn't enjoying the game at all up to that point - it already felt repetitive and that was just doing a tutorial and the first couple of arenas! Find a tire, slam it over a guy and throw a guy into a spiked wall / find another tire and repeat.

My major complaints however are, while the black and white artwork looks really good, it doesn't serve the gameplay - in fact, it was already making things frustrating as it's hard to see the tires and signposts and spiked walls you need to kill guys with to rack up the points because of the black and white. Secondly, the 3d movement and camera sucks and is awkward like an early 3d game. Third, the Wii motion controls are lame, like No More Heroes, the movement choices just feel arbitrary & don't immerse you any more into the game than standard button presses would, but the motions are more awkward and unpleasant to perform than just pressing buttons (and harder to remember).

Right now I feel it's much more likely I'll trade this in than give it another shot.

£4.95 in the Zavvi Mega Monday sale. Can't go wrong. Can I?

Also thinking about House Of The Dead 2 & 3 Return for £11.95...

Just moved home and we have a Wii and I figured I should pick up a few games to pass the time; after consulting a bunch of reviews I got Zack & Wiki and this. It is out of controooooolllll!! JGR comparison is TOTALLY OTM; don't see how I didn't pick up on that immediately considering all the hours and hours and hours I've spent playing it (JGR, I mean)

cynthia batter blaster (Stevie D), Friday, 18 June 2010 14:12 (fifteen years ago)

I've got this - spent a few hours playing it the day I bought it and it was pretty fun, but strangely never had the urge to play it again. I guess it got a bit repetitive - the first few times you stick a signpost through someone's head and throw them into a wall of spikes = thumbs up, but it got a bit boring after a while.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 18 June 2010 14:17 (fifteen years ago)

Kind of surprised we haven't heard any noise about porting this to Move/Kinect like the No More Heroes games...
