wow Jet Force Gemini. the memories... or lack of

Shenmue would get my vote by far, but it wasn't released outside of japan until late 2000... will have to think about this for a moment.

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 19 March 2009 13:38 (sixteen years ago)

whoever started doing these (abanana?) was using 1st release date in any market so ive been doing that as well

min (Lamp), Thursday, 19 March 2009 13:47 (sixteen years ago)

pretty much the only games I played in '99 were Final Fantasy Tactics and that Griffey baseball game for the N64.

Oh, and Rival Schools.

GM, Thursday, 19 March 2009 13:48 (sixteen years ago)

For me its a tough choice between Planescape: Torment, Unreal Tournament, and System Shock 2. Hmmmm...

ears are wounds, Thursday, 19 March 2009 13:59 (sixteen years ago)

sadly the only games i played that year were ffviii and super smash bros. i got to the last boss in ffviii pretty quickly, was way too weak to win, said fuck it and bought a snes for $20.

i'm grand like auto theft 3 (Jordan), Thursday, 19 March 2009 14:04 (sixteen years ago)

I had to vote for Jet Force Gemini. Memory makes me think that game was HUGE as I definitely never completed it, but I remember really enjoying it. I spent a good part of the summer (of either 1999 or 2000) playing it while listening to a couple of NOFX records that still remind me of this game whenever I hear them. I let a friend borrow my copy a few years ago and never saw it again

CraigG, Thursday, 19 March 2009 14:06 (sixteen years ago)

It's between RCT, Soul Calibur, and Alpha Centauri for me. I guess RCT because I spent the most time playing it. I'd love to play Alpha Centauri again, maybe I will figure out how to run it on OS X (haven't messed with Boot Camp yet).

Euler, Thursday, 19 March 2009 14:08 (sixteen years ago)

fyi if anyone has played homeworld and wants to rep for it plz do so! when "researching" for this poll it had a # of goty mentions but id never even heard of it. from the descriptions it sounds pretty dope and im kinda interested in d/ling it

min (Lamp), Thursday, 19 March 2009 14:09 (sixteen years ago)

tbh dont see how anyone could vote for anything but super smash bros but ill allow that im not a "gamer" and also i have a sort of unreasonable affection for that game

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Thursday, 19 March 2009 14:09 (sixteen years ago)

literally no other game besides maybe link to the past and chrono trigger has provided me with that kind of sustained pleasure--maybe goldeneye? pinnacle of the n64 imo

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Thursday, 19 March 2009 14:11 (sixteen years ago)

lol theres a weird amount of derision out there for the smash bros series esp among hardcore fighting game headz but yah that and tony hawk seemed like the two obv frontrunners to me

min (Lamp), Thursday, 19 March 2009 14:12 (sixteen years ago)

n64 was an underrated console ime but there were a lot of rad games for it this year. Pokémon Snap abd Harvest Moon 64 are particularly dope imo and id play the hell out of pretty much every 64 title on this list

min (Lamp), Thursday, 19 March 2009 14:37 (sixteen years ago)

someday lets do a n64 games poll--that was my last system in terms of i followed it and payed attn to what gamez came out & stuff--since then i have been a wastrel

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Thursday, 19 March 2009 14:38 (sixteen years ago)

Planescape vs Soul Calibur for me

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Thursday, 19 March 2009 14:39 (sixteen years ago)

oh yeah, soul calibur was fun too. honestly though i had a blast playing smash brothers with friends for maybe three nights total, same with soul calibur.

i'm grand like auto theft 3 (Jordan), Thursday, 19 March 2009 14:40 (sixteen years ago)

I have Homeworld knocking about somewhere. Space-based RTS. Not many of them around then (or now maybe). Played the first few levels but RTSs have never been my bag really. Still thought it was an interesting take on the genre.

ears are wounds, Thursday, 19 March 2009 15:43 (sixteen years ago)

ok went with Unreal Tournament, mainly because it is the only one I still occasionally play to this day (although I might resurrect Planescape at some point).

Might have gone with Tony Hawks but it was either 2 or 3 that really hooked me.

ears are wounds, Thursday, 19 March 2009 15:45 (sixteen years ago)

I'm always torn between picking the one that I enjoyed the most at the time and the one that I would pick today.

Back in the day, I would have been too busy playing Tony Hawk to even read this poll. Gawd I was obsessed with that game, and CS.

I f'd up the word rear (Z S), Thursday, 19 March 2009 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

Never really got into Counterstrike. Team Fortress was always my thing online.

ears are wounds, Thursday, 19 March 2009 16:07 (sixteen years ago)

Planescape just barely gets the nod over Alpha Centuari, both were wonderful games. Soul Calibur was pretty fantastic too, especially as a launch DC title.

Nhex, Thursday, 19 March 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

Voted System Shock 2. Probably the best game I had played that year (just over Planescape and Alpha Centauri), but also you have to give SS2 credit for Bioshock. So it has been more in my mind over the last couple years (whereas story-driven RPGs and turn-based space operas have kinda fallen off my radar).

Mordy, Thursday, 19 March 2009 19:07 (sixteen years ago)

I was playing tons of video games in 1999-- and had a chipped PSX, actually. So why do so few of these look familiar?

antexit, Thursday, 19 March 2009 19:14 (sixteen years ago)

Was Homeworld that space RTS in 3D game? If so-- thing made me nauseous when it came out.

Mordy, Thursday, 19 March 2009 19:16 (sixteen years ago)

This was the era when I didn't play any video games at all.

FF8 was the last FF I really set myself to grinding on. No pleasant memories, but it's virtually all I played that year.

WOOKIE JOHNSON (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 19 March 2009 21:14 (sixteen years ago)

FFVIII was kind of designed to penalise you for grinding, so that must have been fun. (n.b. remember being horribly shafted by this.)

thomp, Thursday, 19 March 2009 21:32 (sixteen years ago)

maybe that was why i couldn't beat it? because i did too much grinding, not because i sped through it?

i'm grand like auto theft 3 (Jordan), Thursday, 19 March 2009 21:34 (sixteen years ago)

Man, really? I was never told.
I remember it being a totally unpleasant experience.

WOOKIE JOHNSON (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 19 March 2009 22:05 (sixteen years ago)

My friend and i still play Heroes of Might and Magic III
HOT SEAT STYLE
although we rarely ever finish a game and often get too drunk and pass out while playing

s1ocki, Monday, 23 March 2009 00:08 (sixteen years ago)

incidentally i think i played ONE of these games (silent hill) and it was at antexit's house

s1ocki, Monday, 23 March 2009 00:08 (sixteen years ago)

iirc the enemies scaled up equally to you, but did better per level gain, thus making level-building counterproductive except for bosses

instead it favoured junctioning spells to whatever was the weakness of the enemies in the area you were fighting

however, acquiring spells to junction was kind of a massive pain in the arse and like grinding only counterintuitive so (shrug)

thomp, Monday, 23 March 2009 00:27 (sixteen years ago)

i have this weird feeling i'm remembering this completely wrong now.

thomp, Monday, 23 March 2009 00:27 (sixteen years ago)

That sounds pretty accurate, from what I remember in my limited experience of playing it.

Nhex, Monday, 23 March 2009 00:54 (sixteen years ago)

Nope, that's pretty much how it was.

meisenfek, Monday, 23 March 2009 02:12 (sixteen years ago)

i got SO GOOD at that fucking card game; probably spent equal time playing it in comparison to the main game.

Lamp, Monday, 23 March 2009 04:26 (sixteen years ago)

incidentally pokémon snap was a pretty rad way to kill a saturday afternoon thought that needed to be said

Lamp, Monday, 23 March 2009 04:27 (sixteen years ago)

Unreal Tournament (HEAD SHOT!) was the last FPS I fell in love with until a few blissful afternoons of Halo with a buddy a couple years ago. That one level where you're in space on two asteroids with a tower on each and a bridge between? That was awesome! Great weapons, too.

Soul Calibur was the game only the nerd dorm room had but you would still go and sit and wait your turn for. ACHING thumbs from that one though, criminy.

Speaking of dorms, though, this is all Tony Hawk. #2 was bigger and richer in almost every way - but this was still one hell of a game, and had more downhill courses, which were way more fun, just careening down these landscapes that had been designed backwards from what would be the most fun universe to skate down. Building up to actually getting some air in this game was such a release, so satisfying, just gliding out into space. Great control, great physics, great experience and of course great two-player. Really made my freshman year.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 23 March 2009 04:59 (sixteen years ago)

Also btw Alpha Centauri was horrible. See also OldManMurray's review:

Go ahead make fun of my childlike mind, but when offered the choice between trying to develop either Singularity Mechanics, Organic Superlubricant, or SuperString Theory, I just don't care. I dare you to tell me how these three items rank.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 23 March 2009 05:08 (sixteen years ago)

I worked in a games shop through 1999, and looking at that list, it feels like that must've led to me playing hardly any games. Although I think what's actually wrong is that the Dreamcast was a pretty big deal in 99, and isn't really represented up there. Spent a lot of time playing Chu Chu Rocket, Seaman, Get Bass, Sonic Adventure, and most of all Sega Rally 2. The Euro release of Dance Dance Revolution for PS1 was in 1999 too, that soaked up a lot of playtime.

From what's on offer, I'd probably go for Pokemon Gold or Mario Golf, I guess.

JimD, Monday, 23 March 2009 10:44 (sixteen years ago)

Unreal Tournament was my first and still greatest experience of online FPS. And that must have been on dialup, how was that possible? Great weapons, great levels, great times. However I voted for Wipeout by mistake.

ledge, Monday, 23 March 2009 11:53 (sixteen years ago)

jesus, it's ten years since the dreamcast already?

huh, it was the better part of a year before it went from JP to NA/EU availability.

i think i prefer chu chu rocket to whatever i voted for but i didn't get that until the free european copies showed up. (totally the most underappreciated game ever, chu chu rocket: barely a week goes by without my seeing a copy for, like, 50p.)
