Anyone else still not taken the plunge into the "next generation"? I mean, eventually I'll get a Wii and/or an Xbox 360, but in the meantime, the relative ease of use of the PS2, and the decent, continually unfolding post-mortem library keeps me happy. They said it was dead after Okami, but then there was FFXII. Then there was Rogue Galaxy. Then, God of War 2. Then, the best MLB game on PS2 to date. And there are sure to be a couple more hits left.

Who's still a half-way luddite? There must be more of us.

Will M., Monday, 30 April 2007 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

Err, that said, I will probably play each of those games for an average of five hours each at most, but still. Why are decent games STILL dropping?

Will M., Monday, 30 April 2007 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

Me. I beat GoW2 a while ago and am now working on Rogue Galaxy and the alternate endings to Ar tonelico, not to mention Sega Genesis Collection, God Hand, GTA: LCS (still need to get VCS) and various older RPGs. Odin Sphere looks tight.

I don't think I'll be buying a new console until this fall at the earliest.

marmotwolof, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

Why are decent games STILL dropping?

because PS2 is STILL outselling PS3.

onimo, Monday, 30 April 2007 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

PS2 is still outselling ALL the systems, isn't it?

I remember hearing an NPR story around new years about how the top selling system this christmas was the PS2, despite all the hype about Wii vs. PS3. Lemme find a link...

Ah, here we are.

Z S, Monday, 30 April 2007 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

the best MLB game on PS2 to date

Which one is that? I haven't bought a baseball game since High Heat '04.

marmotwolof, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 00:13 (nineteen years ago)

I'm liking MLB 07 The Show.

Will M., Tuesday, 1 May 2007 00:55 (nineteen years ago)

Is Rogue Galaxy worth the time?

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:13 (nineteen years ago)

I've only put a few hours into it, but it's kind of like Dark Cloud 2 with less fiddly shit, so far.

marmotwolof, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:22 (nineteen years ago)

God of War 2 in the post to me and I'm still finishing off Vice City Stories. I love my PS2!

kv_nol, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

I'm replaying God of War on Spartan before I pick up the second one, and it's kicking my arse, so my PS2's probably got a lot of life in it. I never finished it on normal, but lost my save, so I thought I'd make the jump to hard. Fuck you every baddy.

melton mowbray, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 11:24 (nineteen years ago)

It also helps that every single decent game for the nextgen consoles is being held for the fall / winter pre holiday blitz period (late august through november / december). The video game industry always complains about poor spring summer sales....maybe if they released some decent games during those months we would....buy them?

Matt D, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 12:41 (nineteen years ago)

i bought a ps2 less than 6 months ago! still playing the shit out of GTA:SA and Gran Turismo 4. haven't even got katamari or okami or either of the gods of war or anything yet. i like doing this stuff way behind everyone else, i think.

gff, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

I couldn't face Spartan, I am teh wuss u_u

kv_nol, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

@gff I usually wait until a fair bit later too, esp. with new systems. I don't want a new system until there's at least 200 hours of stuff I want to play! That way I never run out of stuff I want to play in case of an emergency weekend binge or three.

Will M., Tuesday, 1 May 2007 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

Does PS2 look better with Component? The Wii looked hella better when I upgraded to component cables, though it does have the EDTV advantage, but contrast is the big deal I suppose. Anybody set up this way?

Once I actually get paid I think I might hoard a bunch of the PS2 shit that's in my wishlist finally.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

The only difference with component cables on PS2 is that you need it hooked up to component cables to play games in progressive scan (480p). Unfortunately very few ps2 games actually have a progressive scan mode (most of the one's that do list it on the back, so check yours). In fact of all the games I have, only God of War has it. Ye,s it does look better (just sharper & cleaner), but not a ton. As far as my eyes could see, component cables provided no improvement on non-progressive mode games (i.e. almost every ps2 game). If you're planning on buying a ps3 at some point, at least the component cables for both systems are the same (though once you get the ps3 you may want to go HDMI if your TV has enough HDMI inputs).

Will M., Tuesday, 1 May 2007 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

i'm seriously so close to going out and buying and brand-new PS2 right now.. still recuperating from surgery and there's no Wiis anywhere. it's just too bad it's not in HD :(

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 09:52 (nineteen years ago)

Go on TH, they're so cheap at the moment and there's plenty there to keep you occupied. Unless surgery was on hand which probably means that you shouldn't play! Much.

kv_nol, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

haha i got one! but woolworth's only has like 7 cricket games and nothing else :(

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

i'm going to the virgin megastore at bishopsgate, although i would rather support an indie shop - by which i mean some backroom in chinatown that sells bootlegs

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

Saw the other thread. Welcome aboard etc etc...

kv_nol, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

How much was the PS2 Tracer? If I found one for I dunno, £40 I would pick one up :)

I recommended you some retailers on the ILE thread - Game Focus are srsly the best IMHO tho :)

Sarah, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

It was 94 pounds at Woolworth's. I'm sure there are cheaper venues but i have it NOW!

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

Oh stuff that - way too close to £100 for me :) It's around £90 at Amazon IIRC, I'm keeping my eye on the price for dropping but it's showing no signs yet.

Sarah, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

Try craigslist! I don't know how prevalant (prevalent?) it is in the Yuke, but over here you get MAD deals, and the big PS2 > the little PS2 IMO!

Will M., Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

Arf - craigslist in the UK is pretty much only confused Americans recently moved to the UK asking "where the bars at" to an empty room as far as I can tell :) Yeh I could always look in Loot or something, but I'm not *really* fussed about getting one, if I found a cheap one willing to leap into my fervid arms that wd be ace tho :)

Sarah, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

Why is the big PS2 better?

The Yellow Kid, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

A friend of mine is into chipping and the like, and says the bigguns are cooled better (he has had a littlun overheat on him). He berates them ALL THE FUCKING TIME. I picked my little PS2 up because fatty couldn't handle Singstar/Guitar Hero any more, no matter how much I cleaned the lens. Therefore I favour the little guy over his hueg ugly bro.

Also, it can fit on top of stuff.

melton mowbray, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

I switched to the thin because the fatty that I bought second hand kept dying. What is this chipping of which you speak?

kv_nol, Thursday, 3 May 2007 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

It's like the chipping in old Playstations, where he got some dodgy console modder to stick a chip in his PS2 so he can play Asian imports and "backups" etc on his console. Most he bought in Hong Kong, but definitely aren't legitimate copies of the games :)

I've been v. tempted to find someone to do this to mine without breaking it, as a lot of the games he's brought back with him from Hong Kong have been bloody brilliant. I'd sort of rather buy an already modded one rather than getting my fatty chipped up though, tbh.

melton mowbray, Thursday, 3 May 2007 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

Dood! Chipping is for crazies. Get Swap Magic.

Basically you get something that allows you to open the tray of your PS2 without it recognizing it's been opened (big ones can use a new case with a flip-open tray, or a little slim-jim type device, and the small ps2 uses a different device that just holds down the part that tells the PS2 that the tray's open, iirc). You boot up w/ swap magic in, and then it goes to a swap screen, you put your import or backup in, close it, hit X, and BIZZAM. No need for chippins.

Will M., Thursday, 3 May 2007 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, he used to do that as well, but for some reason only chips now. Maybe a 50/60hz thing?

melton mowbray, Friday, 4 May 2007 03:01 (nineteen years ago)

You can switch between the two on swap magic as well. I know this because a few times I've accidentally booted in PAL and seen the delicious flicker of black and white. It makes less of a difference these days than more anyway, because of the invention of PAL-60.

If he doesn't do it anymore it's probably because people realized that he's ripping them off if they charge for it, because on an old PS2 all you need to do is rip the front panel off and put the slim jim in. And on the new one, you put a little pin in the top. At most, you MIGHT need a screwdriver if you plan to install a new case (the fancy way to do it)

Will M., Friday, 4 May 2007 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

Oh sorry, I didn't mean he actually CHIPS the systems - he just has his chipped! I meant he doesn't use Swap Magic anymore, and actually went the whole way and got a chip. I'll ask him why, next time I see him. Could well just be laziness. (Note: his PS2 is Japanese and is chipped to play US and European games, rather than the other way around).

Z S, Sunday, 6 May 2007 05:22 (nineteen years ago)

Ahh, might be because swapping a disc every time is ANNOYING. If I could chip mine right now I would (but money + inherent risk = no thanks)

i am really really happy with Ico

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 10 May 2007 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

and Pro Evo 6 is good too, although i am running into the problem i have with all soccer games, viz: virtua-fighter-style button combo memorisation requirements, which i am incapable of, so i never get any better at it

Ico really is so great

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 10 May 2007 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

i am really really happy with Ico

Okay, I don't get this game obviously. I'm not going back though, it was too boring.

Playing Destroy all humans 2. I think we can all see why ICO didn't work for me!

kv_nol, Thursday, 10 May 2007 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

i would actually prefer Ico if there were no fighting in it at all ;_;

Tracer Hand, Friday, 11 May 2007 13:58 (nineteen years ago)

Tracer I generally just screw around in the management of my team so much that I barely even need ot play well to win, becuase I have a team of superheroes. I think I should just play FM2007 instead.

Will M., Friday, 11 May 2007 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

anybody else played Rogue Galaxy yet?

TOMBOT, Friday, 11 May 2007 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

I'm still playing it. About 26 hours in, Ch. 8., Leo King's Castle.
You started it?

marmotwolof, Friday, 11 May 2007 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

no I'm still working on Ocarina of Time. I think I might go for RG before I pick up paper mario though.

TOMBOT, Friday, 11 May 2007 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

i think i have assembled an impeccable library of games, what do you chaps think:

* we love katamari damacy
* pro evolution soccer 6
* metal gear solid: subsistence
* ico

this is the creme de la creme, people

Tracer Hand, Friday, 18 May 2007 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

Well I got God of War and, on a whim, Okami. GoW hasn't blown me away, feels like a pretty standard hack 'n' slash to me, and the button mashing could become v tiresome. Okami, well it annoyed me with its 20 mins of play-free exposition, and it still feels like an extended tutorial, but it could be a grower.

ledge, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

i love tutorials, it often feels like the only part of the game where the people who made the game are actually thinking and caring about you. maybe that's why i like Ico so much, it's like one long, ever-more-difficult tutorial

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

Tracer as I understand Odin Sphere is less of an RPG and more of a side-scrolling beat em up with a few RPG elements.

Will M., Tuesday, 29 May 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah Will, it's only an RPG as far as exp points and such, but even that isn't handled in a conventional way. You get HP exp for eating food and weapon exp for killing enemies and absorbing their life force, that's it. And there's an alchemy system, but it's pretty simple. Everything else is straight up action.

marmotwolof, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

More about the food: I think ILG would be interested in hearing about the SHEEP SEEDS. You can plant a seed that sprouts into a plant bearing ACTUAL SHEEP, then you have to chase down the sheep and kill them to get some meat on a bone. You can eat the meat and throw the bone at an enemy.

You can also find chicken eggs that will hatch if you drop them, then you feed the chick three seeds and it will turn into a full grown chicken which you can kill and eat and chuck the bones at fules just like the sheep.

There are more conventional seeds, berries and fruit and such, and all of these are grown by letting them absorb that enemy life force (called Phozon) instead of drawing it into your weapon. You can take all of these ingredients, the meat, fruit, berries and herbs (along with Mandragoras that squeak when you walk over them on the ground, you jump on the spot that squeaks and then kill the fucker, they're mostly used in alchemy) and take them to a resturant where they will make you dishes with tons of exp and HP bonuses.

marmotwolof, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

four weeks pass...

GrimGrimoire on the way, Persona 3 pre-ordered. I'm gonna milk this PS2 for all it's worth.

marmotwolof, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

I think ico sucks. I am alone in this, I know!

-- kv_nol, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:26 (Friday, 18 May 2007 16:26)

Fucking ico. Tried it again last night. So boring and fiddly. I hate it almost as much as Kingdom of Hearts that I got free with PS2 originally.

marmotwolof, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

Guitar Hero Eighties is pretty lame, although it was really fun to play "Police Truck" and "Los Angeles". I'm already finished with the thing and it's only been a few days.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah totally :(

It seems as if they didn't quite realize that in a game that doesn't come bundled with a guitar and therefore has no first-time players, "expert" should be really, really fucking hard.

I breezed through it without a fail, and I suck at this game! I want guitar hero to end up all mentally difficult and beatmaniesque!

melton mowbray, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:43 (eighteen years ago)

If you breezed through Expert you definitely don't suck at the game. I can't beat the Extreme song on Expert. :( That and "Jordan" on GH2 are the only songs I haven't been able to beat.

I actually thought it was cool that they introduced some new techniques (the fast 1 finger to 3 finger transfers on "What I Like About You", the green-orange chord, quick transitions from green-red-blue to green-yellow-blue (for instance), etc. But once I got used to it, they weren't so bad. "What I Like About You" on Expert totally destroys my wrist, though!

I am trying to five-star everything on Hard and Expert. I'm one star away on Hard (fucking Extreme again), and have five stars on all but 7 songs on Expert.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 05:44 (eighteen years ago)

the last Fire Pro Wrestling game is getting a US and possibly Euro release, y'know

That mong guy that's shit, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

marmot: the growlanser games are pretty cool, it's like a tactical rpg or whatever, except you move in lines instead of on grids, and it's quasi real-time... like, everyone is moving simultaneously, but you can pause to input moves and such. each attack/spell/etc has a recharge time before you can walk or attack or whatever again. it's really good, but at a certain point, at least for me, growlanser 3 got MEGA hard due to one particular mission involving a rotting floor.

Will M., Wednesday, 1 August 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

and yeah, new fire pro wrestling game = get in my belly plz.

is shadow hearts covenant good? i always hear insanely good things.

persona 3 has 87 on metacritic, which is mindblowing for a non-final-fantasy rpg, imo.

Will M., Wednesday, 1 August 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

okami, FFXII, FFX, and DQ8 are the only (currently) higher-rated RPGs over Persona 3. Now, to be fair, the numbers are a bit inflated because the only people who have probably reviewed it are either fans of the series, interested enough to actually put up a pre-release review, or both. It'll probably dip in a month... but still. It's above both Kingdom Hearts games, and those are pretty beloved by the critic community.

Will M., Wednesday, 1 August 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

I never really thought of Okami as a RPG but I guess that's true!

marmotwolof, Friday, 3 August 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

it's a slippery slope.

marmotwolof, Friday, 3 August 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

four months pass...

I'm back on a little ps2 kick right now. With most games running in the 10-20 USD range - they seem a lot more appealing than the sixty dollar stuff coming out on the new systems. Honestly - I'm not sure if any game I've paid sixty dollars for has given me sixty dollars worth of entertainment (except maybe Orange Box). I like being able to just try whatever out - tho it's too bad a few of the ps2's more interesting looking games have gone out of print (Ico!).

It's a little funny that even though I've had a ps2 for a long while (ever since the slim version came out, whenever that was exactly), I never bought too many games for it, but now that it's on it's last legs, it's really seeming like for me, its time has arrived & my library is growing (rapidly).

Oh - do you have any specific recommendations of out-of-print ps2 games that I should definitely try to track down sooner rather than later?

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

I finished a night degree in June (October), and now I'm catching up on 3-4 years of PS2 games I never got around to buying/playing. This summer will be insane.

one year passes...

it's nearly february 2009 and your PS2 still isn't fkn dead!!

cozwn, Sunday, 11 January 2009 13:56 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, I think persona 4 is the only AAA title coming out in the near-term but the back catalogue of odin sphere, grimgrimoire, breath of fire: dragon quarter, yakuza 2, zone of enders 2, etc is keeping me v.occupied at the moment

cozwn, Sunday, 11 January 2009 14:04 (seventeen years ago)

annoying that some of the most covetous titles are really creeping up in price now tho: MGS3 subsistence, ar tonelico, wild arms 5 are all edging towards £40/50 on ebay : //

cozwn, Sunday, 11 January 2009 14:06 (seventeen years ago)

i got a hdloader hooked up & am back in PS2land. so many good games! still obsessed with Persona 3.

zappi, Sunday, 11 January 2009 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

is the hdloader thing any good? do you need a chipped ps2 to run it (or can you do it using swap magic?) where do you get a ps2 chipped? can you bonk mitsuru in persona 3?!

cozwn, Sunday, 11 January 2009 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

doesn't it force most games into 4:3?

cozwn, Sunday, 11 January 2009 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

oh, I totally misunderstood what hdloader was! it's the thing tht lets you run games off a HDD rather than the thing that forces non-480p supporting PS2 games into 480p!!

cozwn, Sunday, 11 January 2009 17:19 (seventeen years ago)

In North America (and in Japan too) last year they released a collection of all three Metal Gear Solid games that's still in print for 30 bucks - surprised to read that didn't come out in the UK. Pretty essential stuff.

I do find it extremely weird that game publishers don't do a better job at keeping their old games in print. I can't quite understand it - it's like throwing away easy money. I wish the games industry took its history a little more seriously. You should be able to buy most every significant old game, they way you can with old music or movies, without resorting to the collector's market or emulation / piracy.

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 11 January 2009 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

can you bonk mitsuru in persona 3?!

u can date her

Lamp, Sunday, 11 January 2009 18:25 (seventeen years ago)

no chipping, just a network adaptor & the hdloader disc (and a compatible hard drive, obv). luckily i only had to buy the disc. loading times a lot quicker, no fannying around with discs. works great! don't know about senpai bonking, think i read somewhere that you can go on a date with Elizabeth though! haha.

zappi, Sunday, 11 January 2009 18:25 (seventeen years ago)

jeff, interesting that the three games collection includes subsistence (which is what I really want, just for the full camera); I have swap magic but I'm reticent about opening another PS2 (I duffed my fat one doing that)

You should be able to buy most every significant old game, they way you can with old music or movies, without resorting to the collector's market or emulation / piracy.

It should be easier, since you don't have form purists, everything is already 1s and 0s!
