So who else has tried their offerings? Currently falling out of love with Dune II, I'd forgotten how slow it is!

I've definitely got some bits and pieces from here at various points, though I can't really remember what or when. The original Railroad Tycoon, maybe. I was playing that a few months ago, before the flashy new one came out (which I'm ashamed to admit I loved).

Just having another browse through what they've got there, and I'm VERY tempted to have a go at the first two Alone In The Dark games...

I've been trying to get UFO to work. I don't think I get the DOSBox thing!

I love these guys. I thought the first Alone in the Dark was shit tho. Kv, have you got Dfend?

It's a great site. I'm a bit more liberal than they are regarding what I'm OK with stealing, but I like seeing an abandonware site with morals.

regarding dosbox: install dosbox then install d-fend, then open d-fend and click on the wizard hat to add a game.

This thread reminded me of an old Amiga game I wanted to play, but it wasn't on that site (also came out for DOS and Atari ST, IIRC). So I looked on Wikipedia, no entry. So I looked at the name of the guys who made it, googled them, found their new company, e-mailed them and asked if there were a way to purchase the game.

He sent me to the-underdogs.

I feel 0% guilty about downloading 4 free now! :D

Well, so did I, proably. I don't really remember loving it, I just remember liking the atmosphere. I know I never got very far into it. And I know the copy I had only ran something like 1 time in 5 anyway. But hey, nostalgia is nostalgia.

Which game Will?

JimD, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

I wasn't saying don't play it, Jim. I just remember thinking it looked cool all those years ago and then finally getting to play it via abandonware and thinking "oh this hasn't aged well then :( "

Panzer General, Fantasy General and early 90s RPGs are probably my fave oldies that I still play.

Star Command... a really fun SSi game from 1988 which was like Star Control, kinda, I guess. Except you build a party and raid things too. I played it WAY before Star Control (I only played SC2 about 6 months ago)

No. Would that help?

Yeh. Like Mr Banana said, d/l and install D-fend, it's a front end for dosbox and makes everything much easier.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 10 May 2007 09:52 (eighteen years ago)

I think my DOSbox might be too far advanced. I'll have a look though. Thanks all.

kv_nol, Thursday, 10 May 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm it opens game in a smaller window which is good but it makes the game slower which is bad! Also when I open Dune2 in DosBox it doesn't fill the screen properly. Any help anybody?!

You need to tinker with the graphics settings in D-fend. There's a decent help file, I think. But my basic settings (under the Extra menu, Configure Defaults) are:

Under "General" tab: Resolution 800x600; Scale normal2x; Start fullscreen ticked; Fullfixed ticked

There's an option called Cycles under the environment tab - this affects the running speed, you can tinker with it til you're happy with the game speed

Obv the best thing to do is to have a read of the help file but once you know what the important tabs do it's pretty easy to play with it.

Downloaded Pirates! Gold! No joy though. Can't figure out how to make it work with DosBOX and d-Fend. What should I be looking for, do you think? There's no "Setup" or similar in file list :(

kv_nol, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

I've got it working. Not sure how to save though!

kv_nol, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm the drawer that is meant to be save game doesn't work. I wonder why :*(

kv_nol, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

Pirates is now boring! On to bigger and better things I think. Have to stop doing this at work though. V bad idea!
