For a long time I thought I'd wait to purchase it until a good version came out on Wii. And now that the new version is going to use the new superduper remote sensor, I'm waiting to make sure it works as well as I've been hearing.

playing it on the xbox, wii does sound like a good shout, but i've just no interest in buying one. I probably clocked up 30 hours on this this week.

nice, the irl current weather conditions at the course you're playing will be present

:-0

^Yeah, I noticed that in the gametrailers video. But that immediately made me wonder what happens when you play during the winter. The courses will have snow all over them and/or it will be rainy and windy every time you play?

i like how you get a bar showing you espn news. I read the score of a Copa Libertadores victory for my team Universidad de Chile while scrolling through the menus. Synergy!

override the weather like the US government in conjunction with the Federal Reserve does

do you have fifa jim?

zinguist (cozwn), Monday, 4 May 2009 22:18 (fifteen years ago) link

nah, i'm still on pro evo 6 whenever i get the urge for a football game. I've gotten really conservative with it, same way i used to be with Counterstrike, would not play any FPS apart from CS 1.6 for yeeeears.

bought this today after a trade-in. Will get some practice (and a gold account back) before playing on line. looks gorgeous tho.

Tiger Woods Wii is going to have tournaments, including ones where it takes in the leaderboards from tournaments in progress & you play against the pros real scores over 4 rounds. half the dads in the universe are going to want to play against Tiger etc aren't they???

zappi, Friday, 8 May 2009 19:01 (fifteen years ago) link

one month passes...

anyone picking up 10 this week?

cozwn, Monday, 8 June 2009 10:29 (fifteen years ago) link

was hovering over this yesterday funnily enough, another type of game i haven't played for years.

i think it has something to do with becoming bored to tears with fps games.

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Monday, 8 June 2009 11:06 (fifteen years ago) link

thinking 'bout picking it up but too engrossed in Guitar Hero at the moment and going on holiday next Tuesday for a week, so might not get it for a while.

I'll probably pick it up. As I mentioned on another thread though, my excitement went waaaaay down once I realized the MotionPlus isn't backwards compatible.

I have been playing Tiger 08 non-stop lately.

Tiger 10 looks pretty nice based on the demo, but I hope the actual game isn't so easy.

Hoping to pick up the motion plus bundle after work tomorrow

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 02:59 (fifteen years ago) link

I picked up the bundle yesterday. I've only had the chance to play for a few hours, but so far I'm thinking...

It's so much fun! The motion plus really does work as advertised. It's like what you expected the wii to feel like the day you bought it. Finally, years later, it delivers. I also picked up Grand Slam Tennis but I haven't tried it out yet, so I'm not sure if the motion plus works equally well on both games, or if EA just really nailed it with Tiger 10.

The game itself, it's hard for me to comment on because I haven't played a golf game since Arnold Palmer's Links 2000 or something. It's been a long time. So I can't tell if this is an average Tiger game, a good one, a bad one. Coming at it from the perspective of someone who has never really played a modern golf game, it's reaaaally fun.

At the same time, it is fucking HARD. I'm not sure if it's because I just suck or because the game is actually quite similar to actually playing golf, but it can be really unforgiving at times. The first two amateur tournaments I've played, I ended up shooting about 12 to 15 over par, both rounds, and the announcer says "that was one of the worst rounds of golf I've ever seen". At the same time, as I played through the rounds I started getting a lot more pars and the occasional birdie, so I think I'm getting better.

i also did terribly when i started at tiger woods, played it heavily for a few days and then i was unstoppable.

If you're playing through the game with your own character, you start with super low stats which make it artificially harder, but as you play it more and build up your stats, it gets artificially easier.

I've never played real golf, so I was surprised on my first playthrough with MotionPlus (using Tiger play now) that I ended up playing through 18 holes at only +5. It's cool that Wii MotionPlus makes you do a real swing motion and I think that makes the game a lot more fun (than the ps2 and 360 versions I'd played the hell out of years ago), but it's also still pretty fake and a lot less "sim" than I would have thought, as you still swing on a fixed plane and no matter what and can't, for instance, completely miss or even really miss-hit the ball. Since I'd never even swung a real golf club in my life, I expected to do pretty awful with 1:1 controls, but there I was after a couple of minutes, teeing off for monster 320 yard drives (using Tiger). That made the game a lot more cartoony than I was expecting (I was playing on medium difficulty, perhaps it plays a little more challenging on hard - may try it). Putting felt particularly however. Though again, that you can't really miss-hit the ball (you always hit it dead on) gives the novice player quite an advantage. Yes - it may be the most realistically controlled gold video game ever (for a home console), but it's still VERY video-gamey.

That said, after playing golf with motion controls like this, where you really have to swing into it and use your body, I don't think I could go back to playing with a regular old fashioned control scheme. The physical nature of playing like this simply makes it a lot more fun. It's still a golf game though, so a bit low on action and excitement. The graphics on Wii look fine, though I would prefer a more cartoony / clean look than this semi-realism, as it would probably feel more appropriate for the game. I understand why this and Grand Slam Tennis don't truly control realistically, but I'm looking forward to some game with true 1:1 controls, where you have true freedom of movement. Maybe they could make it work with a ping-pong type game?

Yeah, I had just started my own character and there were some holes where my driver could barely reach the edge of the fairway, even with a 100% shot.

It's kind of strange, then, the way you "level up" in Tiger - at the beginning, you're forced to make perfect shots when you don't really know what you're doing because your character is so weak, and then as you beef up your stats you get more leeway with your shots even as your actual swinging skill (in real life) is much better. It's backwards.

ya'll are the ones who don't know things (Z S), Thursday, 11 June 2009 16:36 (fifteen years ago) link

golf is pretty hard, jeff, so it's understandable why they've limited the controls in such a way. however a sim option (1:1, full 3d plane) would definitely be interesting. I imagine never having played golf before, on some of the world's hardest courses your score would be quite a bit more ugly than +5 tho :)

cozwn, Thursday, 11 June 2009 17:30 (fifteen years ago) link

that's what I'm saying! I don't know that I'd want to play a hardcore golf sim either, just wanted to make sure that in trying to describe what MotionPlus adds to Tiger Woods, that it's a lot different than realism.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 11 June 2009 17:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Sounds like the way is paved for a hardcore golf sim though and I'd be into that.

I'm quickly getting a lot better, shooting even par instead of 15 over. Part of the improvement may come from buying better clubs, but a lot of it is probably because I'm not drunk while I'm playing this time.

ya'll are the ones who don't know things (Z S), Thursday, 11 June 2009 18:05 (fifteen years ago) link

^^^ see if this were a real golf sim that opposite would be true

think i basically have to get this + grand slam this wknd

ho hum i'm having a fantasy (Lamp), Thursday, 11 June 2009 18:19 (fifteen years ago) link

The other area of the game that the motionplus controls seem to make a lot more fun is those pitch or chip shots and shots out of a bunker. It's much easier to sort of get a feel for what you are doing and how much power you want. I always had a mixed time doing that with a stick - it was hard to tell exactly how far you were drawing the club back, baut with the Wii remote it makes tons of sense and feels extremely natural.
