Because I'm curious. MS said 10%, retailers said 30%, and some analyst said 70%. Let's make a completely useless statistic of our own!

Battle Mr. Toad (Will M.), Thursday, 28 May 2009 15:23 (sixteen years ago)

no but only had it for a few months and haven't been hammering it.

man saves ducklings from (ledge), Thursday, 28 May 2009 15:26 (sixteen years ago)

I've had RRoD twice

zinguist (cozwn), Thursday, 28 May 2009 15:27 (sixteen years ago)

I;m not buying one until any of my friends can get one to last longer than six months. One friend is on his seventh unit since launch.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 28 May 2009 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

ps3 rules - and you all know it

BlackIronPrison, Thursday, 28 May 2009 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

RRoD under warranty. Replacement unit stopped outputting video out of warranty and since it wasn't RRoD, I had to pay $100 to get it fixed :(

For what it's worth, out of the people I personally know with xbox 360s, only one hasn't had his die at least once on him (and weirdly enough, that's a launch 360). I'm inclined to believe the 70% or higher figure. Nobody is believing 10% - that's impossible. It does make me a little mad that one kind of hardware failure is covered under a three year warranty, but other kinds are only covered for one year. Doesn't seem right. That said, other than dealing with the absurd automated customer service computer dude, getting a 360 repaired is fairly painless. And they're so inexpensive right now, one can't really complain too much.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 28 May 2009 15:57 (sixteen years ago)

rrod once; my brother bought ours the same day and his hasn't gone down yet, though I've played mine a lot more than his.

dulce est desipere in loco (Euler), Thursday, 28 May 2009 16:00 (sixteen years ago)

one temporary red ring. just never stand them upright.

bnw, Thursday, 28 May 2009 16:06 (sixteen years ago)

or feed them after midnight.

bnw, Thursday, 28 May 2009 16:06 (sixteen years ago)

I'm still pissed that mine went down while playing Civ Rev instead of something beefy like GTA4.

dulce est desipere in loco (Euler), Thursday, 28 May 2009 16:10 (sixteen years ago)

no problems, but hardly ever switch it on. also, its stood upright.

zappi, Thursday, 28 May 2009 16:14 (sixteen years ago)

Don't own one myself, but I know three people that own 360s, and two of them got RRODs. I'm really surprised there hasn't been a greater consumer outcry over it, frankly (and I mean outside of gaming blogs and press).

Nhex, Thursday, 28 May 2009 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

outside of gaming blogs and press = rioting in the streets? most gamers are fat and don't go outside much :(

bnw, Thursday, 28 May 2009 16:50 (sixteen years ago)

I don't have a 360, the RRoD is the main thing that's been putting me off buying one.

snoball, Thursday, 28 May 2009 16:56 (sixteen years ago)

when it fails do you lose your saves & downloaded games?

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Thursday, 28 May 2009 17:14 (sixteen years ago)

Just once for me so far.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 28 May 2009 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

once for me. My mate fixed it doing this: http://www.squidoo.com/xbox_360_red_ring_of_death_fix-how_to_guide123

languid samuel l. jackson (jim), Thursday, 28 May 2009 17:47 (sixteen years ago)

E74 is now covered under warranty, too; and if you've had it repaired for that fault, M$ will refund you retroactively

zinguist (cozwn), Thursday, 28 May 2009 18:07 (sixteen years ago)

jordan, nah cos those are saved on your (detachable) HDD or as part of your online profile

zinguist (cozwn), Thursday, 28 May 2009 18:08 (sixteen years ago)

you lose them if you try to save them onto a cunting microsoft memory card though AARAGHGHAHATRH£RHGH

fallout 3 killed mine, but i think it was just the final nail in a coffin built upon six months of grindy, crunchy noises.

Battle Mr. Toad (Will M.), Thursday, 28 May 2009 23:31 (sixteen years ago)

I don't own one but flatmate has had this happen so I voted accordingly for the X-Box i live with.

System, Thursday, 4 June 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

after totally jonesing for my xbox while it was broken i really haven't been arsed to play it since I got it back. Then this evening I decided to play a bit of pro evo and had such a frustrating game (lost 6-3, every shot the guy took went in, he had no other chances and it had gone in to extra-time at 3-3) that I had a screaming at the telly fit and nearly threw my pad off my screen.

languid samuel l. jackson (jim), Thursday, 4 June 2009 23:05 (sixteen years ago)

feels good to be back.

languid samuel l. jackson (jim), Thursday, 4 June 2009 23:06 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, had one recent fail myself, only had the machine a year and a bit though. The replacement I've been sent is dodgy (power button feels mushy instead of clicky, optical drive button doesn't work half the time so need to use the remote for openng/closing) so I kind of expect another fail some time soon.

But hey, I work in videogame retail analysis! And our numbers say the fail rate is runnng at around 35%.

JimD, Friday, 5 June 2009 02:42 (sixteen years ago)

mine hasn't failed yet

Vokuhila (latebloomer), Friday, 5 June 2009 03:43 (sixteen years ago)

3 RRoD since launch for me

adam, Friday, 5 June 2009 22:18 (sixteen years ago)

no rrod yet but i've never been able to play a game off disc w/o it crashing at some pt (after loading the new UI anyway, it was fine before). gotta do everything off the HD.

50% ILX FAILURE RATE CONFIRMED
more if you count the multi's.

Aieritating vowele syndroume (Will M.), Friday, 5 June 2009 23:05 (sixteen years ago)

even more if you count the people who don't even HAVE xboxes.

s1ocki, Friday, 5 June 2009 23:53 (sixteen years ago)

it's 100% if you also count people whose xboxes are fine!

Aieritating vowele syndroume (Will M.), Saturday, 6 June 2009 00:19 (sixteen years ago)

this does not allay my fears for buying a 360 anytime soon

if it is really is even near 35% that is absolutely atrocious

AMYL NATHRAKH (jjjusten), Monday, 8 June 2009 21:48 (sixteen years ago)

four months pass...

I've been having a problem lately where I put a disc in and the console just can't seem to read it. It will try to load it but not see a disc, or will see the disc and will just freeze after a few moments, or freeze right away, or start and then say "Disc unreadable". This happens with old discs and brand new ones alike. It struggles to read DVDs. Any idea what my options are? I'm sure glad I bought Gay Tony right before I found out I can't play it!!

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Friday, 30 October 2009 06:42 (sixteen years ago)

I had 3rings before the "fix," sent it back, and haven't had a problem with the new/fixed one since.

Mordy, Friday, 30 October 2009 06:44 (sixteen years ago)

Poly, that happens with me to "backups" but bought games still work fine. It's a problem with the laser. It either needs to be recalibrated or replaced. Either way it wouldn't be expensive to have done if you have a repair shop nearby.

antexit, Friday, 30 October 2009 11:47 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into that.

so, is it worth it getting a new 360 or not. will it just fail in 5 years again?

Five years is a pretty long time.

360 won't be around at ALL in 5 years, surely.

feels like heelys are racing up my spine (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 22:49 (fourteen years ago)

if you already have the library, might as well get the slim

Nhex, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 22:50 (fourteen years ago)

either I'll get the slim or never play 360 games again :(
so expensive

Most important for me is to get Skyrim when it comes out but maybe instead of getting a 360 I'll start making a gaming computer (and will hopefully be able to afford it). I should do that for Skyrim and Diablo 3

time to look at the prices
