passed on the lead in "all i can do is crossups cuz ihave no skills" (jamescobo), Friday, 26 June 2009 07:11 (fifteen years ago)

sure, if you ignore the outside world

Nhex, Friday, 26 June 2009 08:14 (fifteen years ago)

lemmings, says a non-arcade non-nintendo fanboy.

ledge, Friday, 26 June 2009 08:21 (fifteen years ago)

Great Scott! It's Molecular Man. (Ste), Friday, 26 June 2009 08:36 (fifteen years ago)

streets of rage. this is purely a nostalgia vote of no aesthetic consequence whatsoever.

thomp, Friday, 26 June 2009 10:40 (fifteen years ago)

monkey island for me. that game blew my 11 yr old mind, it's the least i can do

NI, Friday, 26 June 2009 10:48 (fifteen years ago)

street fighter II should get this, then Zelda.

cozwn, Friday, 26 June 2009 11:29 (fifteen years ago)

It's a tough one, with Civilization and Zelda in there, as I spent a *lot* of time playing Civ (I'm sure I mentioned in the Coint and Plick poll that I still like to play the original Civ from time to time). Zelda is great, but I came to that after Ocarina (my first Zelda), as I never had a SNES.

In the end I voted Monkey Island 2. I still occasionally get these wierd musical flashbacks where suddenly the Largo LaGrande tune, the theme from the opening credits, the dancing skeleton dream after you fall out the tree, or any number of other bits will suddenly pop into my head. I actually got a less than legal copy of this game sent from Saudi Arabia (my dad was there for the tail end of the Gulf war), and the 'manual' that came with the game turned out to be a typed up walkthrough, with screenshots and everything. That came in pretty damned handy. Just played through it again using ScummVM on the DS about 3 months ago too; just such a great game.

CraigG, Friday, 26 June 2009 13:24 (fifteen years ago)

shit, clicked on streets of rage before seeing zelda!

the shock will be coupled with the need to dance (jim), Friday, 26 June 2009 13:26 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, sure, that's what all the BNP voters said....

darraghmac@nebbmail.com (darraghmac), Friday, 26 June 2009 13:27 (fifteen years ago)

Dudes, Super Mario World? Or does that count as 1990?
Also, Out Of This World/Another World?!
Also, is there a series of links to the other polls somewhere? I'd like to see them all side-by-side... I imagine 1995 will be an absolute cracker once it's done!

ㇱ (Will M.), Friday, 26 June 2009 14:36 (fifteen years ago)

And given the options, I can't look past Battletoads.

ㇱ (Will M.), Friday, 26 June 2009 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

the only reason i wouldn't vote SFII is because it's not SF II Hyper Fighting. link to the past is great but i didn't play it until it was on GBA. i have fond childhood memories of lemmings, but even fonder childhood memories of watching my friend play through final fantasy iv (didn't get it myself until after graduating college, i think).

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Friday, 26 June 2009 14:40 (fifteen years ago)

I probably played more Tecmo Super Bowl and Battletoads in 1991 than any other game. Good lord, Battletoads was hard.

ya'll are the ones who don't know things (Z S), Friday, 26 June 2009 16:17 (fifteen years ago)

Has to be Monkey Island 2. So clever and funny and (for 11 year old me at least) really spooky in places too. The level of detail that went into it (thinking of the library books and poster listing Guybrush's crimes for instance)was amazing.

If it was Lemmings 2 in the poll it might be a closer contest.

Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past
Lemmings

Oh mygosh the PAIN of CHOICE...:O

baleen, the krill queen (Abbott), Friday, 26 June 2009 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

Link to the Past I still bust about once every two years and it's ALWAYS a blast, especially once you get the duck that swoops you around.

baleen, the krill queen (Abbott), Friday, 26 June 2009 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

Battletoads was hard.

yah 4 real. battletoads required the intense concentration that only a seven year old with nothing to do could bring. i remember renting it w/ my friend and playing all wknd and just getting sonned and sonned and sonned by every race lvl

i have played less than half of these btw

Lamp, Friday, 26 June 2009 18:49 (fifteen years ago)

Battletoads was the de facto father of a generation of kids in 1991. So much sonnage, it was ridiculous.

ya'll are the ones who don't know things (Z S), Friday, 26 June 2009 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

i watched a complete battletoads run on youtube a few weeks ago, basically in awe

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Friday, 26 June 2009 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

final fantasyiv/sf ii/monkey island ii/lemmings/zelda link to the past are all top twenty all time

Mindless Thugs Mixtape Volume One (forksclovetofu), Friday, 26 June 2009 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

I don't really get the love for MI2. It always seemed like the odd one out in the original trilogy (MI1 being super genius, obviously, and MI3 being the really cool modern looking one). But I wonder if I played it now if I'd appreciate the surrealism more than I did when it first came out.

Mordy, Friday, 26 June 2009 21:26 (fifteen years ago)

Link to the Past was completely ruined for me because I stupidly bought the strategy guide the same day I bought the game, so I'm voting Tecmo Super Bowl. Its Super NES incarnation (from 1993) is my favorite football video game of all time. Yes, I've been playing all those newfangled Maddens for years, and I still think Tecmo's miles better. I bought my ten-year-old cousin a Tecmo cart and a Super NES on Ebay and he has been OBSESSED with it. His team is the Bills, and he does that Thurman Thomas run and even when I pick his play he still manages to gain yards. He doesn't even bother with Madden 2008 anymore.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Sunday, 28 June 2009 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

Zelda wins, thats the default.

Seeing SFII I'm reminded of when somebody had bought it on import for about a million pounds and was scared they were going to get robbed on the way home, brought it round to a friends house and we were all mad excited about it/couldnt believe that it existed/that they'd manage to put the arcade on the console etc etc Seems like a long time ago that arcade perfect was like the holy grail in games.

Monkey Island 2 also gave a mild pang because it's wonderful and enduring, but it's gotta be Zelda everytime. I'm almost ashamed of how much I love Zelda, except I'm not.

Michael tapeworm much talent for the future (s1ocki), Tuesday, 30 June 2009 13:46 (fifteen years ago)

ME TOO. When I worked @ a camp they had a junky old computer and basically the only thing it could do was run Civ 1. Which was so fun! Even though it was like 2000!

Also, I was so in love with my gf last night when she was like "you know, I think I fucking hate Zelda games. i mean, like... what's the point?"

and FY, that was me voting for Battletoads-- the only game up there was wasn't bettered by one of it's (pre|se)quels.

ㇱ (Will M.), Tuesday, 30 June 2009 15:04 (fifteen years ago)

(fuk u if u disagree is basically what i am saying)

ㇱ (Will M.), Tuesday, 30 June 2009 15:05 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I played Civ1 throughout my school summer holiday. constantly.

#/.'#/'@ilikecats (g-kit), Tuesday, 30 June 2009 15:06 (fifteen years ago)

I cared too. In fact, I expressed my care not half a thread ago. But with just one vote to cast it had to be MI2.

CraigG, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 18:38 (fifteen years ago)

i missed this one but i would've voted for commander keen

that was my dude

FUCKIN 'TALLICA BRO (cankles), Tuesday, 30 June 2009 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

I played the hell out of Civilization myself. For years! It's weird, in my mind I completely separate those experiences of playing Civ vs. SF2, but I guess they did come out around the same time...

Nhex, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

oh I played the hell out of some Commander Keen back in the day (I remember staying home sick from school one day and playing Paddle Wars for like four straight hours) but I mean c'mon, SNES ZELDA FFS.

passed on the lead in "all i can do is crossups cuz ihave no skills" (jamescobo), Tuesday, 30 June 2009 19:01 (fifteen years ago)
