The Darkness

Not the band, the game. Anybody thinking about picking this up next week? It looks kind of embarrassingly goth-nerd, but I saw a video of some tentacles with teeth ripping faces off and throwing cop cars around and was very intrigued.

I'm definitely considering it. The videos have looked really good, but I'm still waiting for a few real reviews

1up posted their review today, and it was pretty much unqualified praise.

I'm reading it as being a little more mixed. Game sounds short. I'm not too keen on the idea of waiting for the subway and having to use street signs to get around. And nobody has yet had anything good to say about the multiplayer. On the other hand, it looks (visually) strong. I'm more undecided than ever. I would like a new (next-gen) game to get into this week - but sixty dollars does sound like a lot for a shortish game with possibly little replay value...

antexit - I picked this up (after all) and started it tonight. I haven't got too far, but so far I'm pretty impressed with what I've seen. I will post more maybe at the end of the weekend when hopefully I'll be further along...

Nice! It really looks like my kind of game, but a 10-hour storyline with no replay value and shitty multiplayer seems to say "rental" to me.

I think I'm about halfway through (maybe two-thirds?). The best things about the game are the look and the story. Some of the graphics are amazing - at times it feels like you're walking around inside a movie (the subway areas filled with graffiti seem particulary realistic). The story also has some twists that really knocked my socks off, and some spooky stuff. Increasing your darkness powers is fun - being able to create mini black holes that suck in all the enemies is especially effective. The darklings you can summon however are pretty much useless (or maybe I just haven't figured out how to use them correctly). The creeping darkness is another good weapon, but sometimes it's a little too hard to use - especially when you need to say, get through a small window and unlock a door to solve a "puzzle." There were a few times I got a little stuck, but nothings too hard. The pace is good & mixed with a nice balance between walking around, exploring and talking to people (though I'm not a huge fan of the press A conversations), and combat of various styles.

this game is fun except that it makes my xbox crash all the damn time. the menus are really nice-looking.

this game is fun except it's kind of a downer.

I rented this last night, it's pretty great. I accidentally shot the mob dude at the start when he was chatting to me. I don't miss out on an achievement for this, do I? It's his fucking fault for trusting me with guns in the first place and then not telling me what the left trigger did, I swear. I'd like a game of this right now, but it doesn't really feel like a broad daylight sort of game.

The game uses television sets located within the game to progress the plot, but they can also be used to view full, licensed content. This content includes the movies To Kill a Mockingbird, The Man with the Golden Arm, and The Street Fighter, an episode of Flash Gordon, and several "Popeye" and "Gabby" cartoon shorts.

For some reason this is just awesome to me.

marmotwolof, Friday, 13 July 2007 11:03 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, that is incredibly cool. I watched a whole Fleisher Bros. cartoon on a B&W tv top of some bum's shopping cart. Another problem I kinda have with it is that the Darkness weapons feel weighted all wrong, especially at the higher Darkness levels. You can kill like a dozen guys with the snake thing with complete impunity, and that black hole just feels cheap. I stopped using it it felt so cheap.

I think I'm almost done this game, and thus would be into trading it with someone, maybe?

antexit, Friday, 13 July 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

I had no idea Mike Patton did a voice in this until the opening credits. Kind of makes the game a bit more awesome.

Gukbe, Friday, 20 July 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

Not just any voice-- he's the voice of the demon guy that possesses you!

antexit, Monday, 23 July 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)

The graphics in this look a bit crap, do they look better on the 360?

webber, Monday, 23 July 2007 05:24 (eighteen years ago)

The framerates are supposedly better on 360. PS3 supposedly just has more of those movies or something because of teh blu-ray.

I kinda discounted it after about an hour, didn't like the controls/combat but the presentation is so great

cozwn, Sunday, 5 July 2009 22:55 (sixteen years ago)
