I am totally digging this just now. Stats! Stats! It got me out of bed to run this morning cuz i needed BETTER STATSBest of all you can "compete" in groups to see who runs fastest, longest, etc over any span of time. You can do first to twenty five miles or first to a hundred or first to a sub eight minute mile or whatever. It's real world achievement points!Who else will play with me? I seek challengers!

okay, it APPEARS to have taken my stats. The website is a tetch buggy.Seriously though: so worth it. I went from an occasional jog to thirty miles in six days just because I have the motivation to place in these challenges. Stats work!

so i'm sticking to the original vers for now
yeah both versions of the site are kind of odd and glitchy for me.ILX challenge starts August 1, so any nike dorks should join afore then.

What do you need for this (besides the iPod touch/iPhone) - the receiver to plug into it, and some kind of doohickey to attach it to your sneaks?
― Nhex, Friday, 17 July 2009 23:06 (sixteen years ago)
Nah I think you have to buy some Nike+ sneaks, which have a special pocket in the sole to accommodate the receiver. There are people who modify sneaks from other brands to hold the receiver as well.
Would do this but feel my iPod touch is too heavy to run with. That watch up there looks promising.
― Armageddon Two: Armageddon (dyao), Saturday, 18 July 2009 00:36 (sixteen years ago)
I'm totally down with this. I might even quit smoking for it! Or cut down. It'll be motivating just on its own if I know people will be paying attention to my pathetic 2.5 mile runs.
You don't need Nike+ sneaks. I have them at the moment, but I've used the thingy with Asics and Mizunos by attaching it underneath the laces with a little velcro. You do however need a Nano as far as I know. The iPhone doesn't work and the Touch probably doesn't.
I'm going to be running in New York, Philly, San Diego, Montreal, Toronto and London, ON during August. Can we use this board to talk about our runs?
― antexit, Saturday, 18 July 2009 13:55 (sixteen years ago)
Bah, every time I try to join your group the browser crashes, Forks.
apparently the iphone 3g s works but not iphone 2g : /
― cozwn, Saturday, 18 July 2009 14:00 (sixteen years ago)
I don't have Nike sneakers, but this works fine: http://www.amazon.com/Marware-Sportsuit-Sensor-Sport-Black/dp/B000ID6DTG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1247927095&sr=8-3
You need any of the ipod nanos (they're going for 135 new now) or an iphone 3g or better. And of course the sensor/receiver set; that goes for thirty: http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Nike-iPod-Sport-touch/dp/B001GQ3DRE/ref=pd_cp_e_3
Discussing runs and milestones here makes sense.
That nike page is buggy as fuck. Keep trying to join!

― bentley cadence (gbx), Saturday, 18 July 2009 14:30 (sixteen years ago)
get a running belt or a neoprene tricep band and that should make running okay.I haven't set my "power song" yet, I made like a 150 track running playlist that I'm looking to expand and make more foolproof so they're ALL power songs. But I will eventually put some ace of bass on there. Shhhh.

― bentley cadence (gbx), Saturday, 18 July 2009 14:34 (sixteen years ago)
My powersong is "gonna fly now." I thought I was real clever until I saw it's the single most popular one on the website.
Does anyone else have problems with the accuracy of the thingy when you're doing sprints? Whenever my stride length gets longer than what I've calibrated it for the accuracy goes way off.
― antexit, Saturday, 18 July 2009 14:43 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, rapid movement changes throw the thing into a tizzy. Everything I read suggests it tends to be off about 5% on distance and as much as 8% on speed. That's honestly close enough for me and as long as everybody else is using the same system I can put up with it.
Where can you see people's powersong?
― ⇑⇑⇓⇓⇐⇒⇐⇒ΛΒΒΛŠΤΛΓΤ (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 18 July 2009 14:51 (sixteen years ago)
If there's a way to see everyone's idk what it us. They put the #1 song in that rolling stats tracker. I don't think putting the thing in an armband would work unless you did some mod to keep it so the side with the swoosh is facing up.
― antexit, Saturday, 18 July 2009 16:09 (sixteen years ago)
not the sensor in an armband, the iphone/pod.

So just a side note about part of the motivation on this: I recently inherited my great grandfathers WWI dogtag from my grandpa over the past father's day. G-gpa ended up losing both his legs in his later years. I bought a silver chain to wear his dogtag and I've taken to wearing the dogtag when I run... sorta to let a part of him keep running free. It's been a great motivator whenever I don't have the juice to keep going.Oh, and g-gpa was my namesake, so the dogtag is in my name. It's the first and only piece of jewelry I've taken to wearing since my early days of college... and likely the only one I'm going to wear from here until i die.
― ⇑⇑⇓⇓⇐⇒⇐⇒ΛΒΒΛŠΤΛΓΤ (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 19 July 2009 04:42 (sixteen years ago)
Speaking of powersongs, can someone who knows these things give me more songs with the same BPM or time signature or whatever of "You're In A Bad Way" by Saint Etienne? That song absolutely hits my running sweet spot.
― antexit, Monday, 20 July 2009 01:50 (sixteen years ago)
music for running?
What's some good mindless, high BPM running music?
I don't know that Etienne, but here's ten from mine: Kryptonite - Big BoiWildcat - RatatatSexy Boy (Cassius Radio Remix) - AirRed Hot Car - SquarepusherPick Up On This - Africa BambaaataaTeardrop - Massive AttackAdnan's - OrbitalBe Easy - Ghostface with TrifeFront Back - T.I. with UGKCherry Range - RZA

I like many of those songs but I wouldn't like to run to any of them! I need, or prefer, a steady driving beat. The kind of loping beat in Front Back or Sexy Boy would hurt my knee.

Forks, have you ever considered running to southern rock? It's too lopey for me but it might be just the ticket for you. I'll make you a playlist if you want
― antexit, Thursday, 23 July 2009 13:18 (sixteen years ago)
mmmmmmaybe? but probably not. Southern rock is what I grew up listening to on the back of the school bus and it doesn't bring back great memories. That said, if you got a playlist, maybe I can learn something. I'm hardly a connoisseur.Generally, I run to electronic and hip hop with the occasional rock song and/or anthemic pop song thrown in.

dunno about the wristband thing but sometimes the ipod syncing works better if you do NOT have a browser already open to the nike site- just itunes. johnny what does the band use to sync? prob not itunes?
ok i have a question is anyone using an armband for iphone or touch...i usually go with my old nano and the sensor plug-in, but the built-in program ON IPHONE combined with the stereo bluetooth (just learned it has that) is making me wonder if anyone is living the dream with wireless sensor, iphone/touch, wireless headphones. true cyborg lobot action?

my not-quite-2-mile jaunt yesterday shows up as one piddly mile on the meter. lols. just realized mid-run that it's time for new sneakers, esp if im seriously about cranking up my speed and distance to try to not shame myself in this challenge. any good shoe recs? would like to get nike+ ones obviously this time, i don't have a problem with nike runners.

okay, i've gone from NOT running at all to 92 miles over 18 runs in about three weeks. I think i'm cruising for an injury. I need to cut back like pronto. Maybe two or three mile runs four times a week and one or two six miles.
― im a fucking unicorn you douchebags (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 03:43 (sixteen years ago)
wow forks, that does sound like a bit too fast of a ramp-up. and i'm not trying to drag your stats down so i can overtake you on the leaderboard, but make sure to give yourself breaks between.
got superbusy early this week and didnt have time to statwhore, cracked the 3k barrier last night, 5k in my sights next and hopefully soon. new shoes on truck for delivery this morning. need to spend tonight building playlists for the next week.
i finally figured out a good armband/headphone configuration: nano upside down, wrap a few cord lengths around the back, all under a shirt to keep the cord from slapping around all the time. seemed to work out well.

Yeah, I fucked myself up I think. My ankles and right knee are vaguely weak and sore all the time and i'm waking up in some real pain. Going to aim for more like twenty or twenty-five a week for the next two weeks. Going running tonight after a three and a half day rest to test it out.
― im a fucking unicorn you douchebags (forksclovetofu), Friday, 7 August 2009 17:55 (sixteen years ago)

lol i dont have nike kicks so i put the sensor in a balloon and hooked the neck under my laces...seems to work and you cant even tell its there

fwiw guys simple course of rehab is: rest, drastic reduction of run length slowly increasing as leg heals, stretching morning and evening, aspirin after running, icing constantly (damp dish towel in the freezer wrapped around the knee for five minutes like six times a day), strengthening the surrounding muscles within your own boundaries with squats and lunges and braces where/when they seem to help. Doctor may give you a course of anti-inflammatory meds and an MRI/X-Ray and you may be much worse off if you've torn anything, but the above is the tried-n-true method and it's what i'm doin'.
― BOO LIAR BEN KONOP BOO BAD BOO BEN KONOP BOO (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 15 August 2009 20:54 (sixteen years ago)
