Tried the demo this morning and ended up buying the game. I think what makes Battlefield 1943 the most fun is the persistent damage and the way it really feels like you're on a crazy, huge battlefield, instead of inside a killbox (CoD style). There seems to be a good variety of stuff to do on each map, from flying planes, to driving tanks or jeeps or boats, to manning anti-aircraft guns or stationary heavy weapons, to the usual running around on foot shenanigans. Maybe what I like least about the game is that in the overall capture the flag style, winning or losing feels very ambiguous, very random and just doesn't carry any weight. If you were playing with an organized team that might be different, but that's never going to happen... Despite being a team game, it doesn't usually feel like one (except at the very beginning of a map or once when somehow I ended up with a group of 5 guys all cresting a small hill at the same time). There are moments when so much destruction and hell is going on all over the playing field that the game really feels amazing. There are also minutes when you can be wandering along a coast line across a map and never see a soul. I like the included maps, especially the colorful Wake Island. Looking forward to playing more... at the least, it's probably the shooter of the summer.

sounds ok, i might pick it up.

― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 13 July 2009 20:38 (fifteen years ago)
the problems u mention jeff are all fixed by partying up; we've been stacking servers w/12 ppl the past two days
― touch fuzzy, get dizzy (cozwn), Monday, 13 July 2009 20:39 (fifteen years ago)
yeah? i've never done anything like that, i try not to even talk to anyone over xbla. is this mainly britishes or wot

bah fukin demo is not connecting
― goole, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 04:55 (fifteen years ago)
I want to love this but I'm very shit at it, so far. I got about 8 lucky kills in my first 15 minutes, and then none at all for the next two hours. Is it just me or it there sometimes a slight delay between seeing antoher player, and having their red or blue name pop up above their heads? Was killed a few times by people I'd accidentally thought were teammates. Am I supposed to just recognise the uniforms or something?
― JimD, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 08:30 (fifteen years ago)
there shdn't be a delay unless there's some lag
you'll die quickly and often unless you squad up, tanks are infantry rapists e.g. but a squad of four can take down a tank quickly. if I see u on jim I'll invite u to one of our games. we usually have a couple of squads on the go in a game. it makes all the difference if you work as a team. with our two squads of four we usually walk over the opposing team of 12 individuals.
u shd maybe just try capping and defending a flag at first, else you'll probably spend a lot of time traipsing around the map not seeing many people and then dying quickly when u do
― touch fuzzy, get dizzy (cozwn), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 08:46 (fifteen years ago)
goole yeh mainly britishes : /
― touch fuzzy, get dizzy (cozwn), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 08:47 (fifteen years ago)
Ha, yeah, that sounds exactly like most of my games so far. Ok, ace, I'll try and find you on there. Seem to be DOZENS of people on my friend list playing.
― JimD, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 08:48 (fifteen years ago)
Jim - sometimes I run across those people without names too... in that case I always shoot first, assuming they're the enemy... since friendly fire is off, no worries. The yellow X symbol on the screen marks the area of the heaviest fighting, so if you're looking for action, head that way. You can also select where you'll spawn, to try to get yourself a little closer to where you want to be heading. That said, I'm not racking up a lot of kills either, eleven being the most I've got in a match, but usually averaging just six or so. Have only being playing lone wolf, and focusing on caps, so it's not too surprising.

I also need a better tv, but am going to try putting this through my monitor and see whether the extra resolution helps my kill rate.
― JimD, Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:42 (fifteen years ago)
ok tried this last night and won the second game i played - which must mean that i was in a group of totally awful players, because i am not exactly all pro when it comes to stuff like this. Seemed like very few people were actually trying to cap flags - i captured 11 during the course of the game!
pretty fun, all things considered, should probably buy it.

I love this game. I think it helps that Im not completely shit at it like I am in Call of Duty.
― mayor jingleberries, Monday, 20 July 2009 18:11 (fifteen years ago)
I kind of forgot about this game already, but I played a handful of rounds tonight and had a good time. Also finally tried out Coral Sea. It does seem kind of limited, but it did give me the chance to pretty much finally learn how to fly, so maybe I'll use that more now in the regular game. It did seem like the easiest way to rack up kills was to fly head on into the enemy planes in a game of chicken w/o penalty.
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 06:04 (fifteen years ago)
This was completely off my radar till yesterday. Am gonna give it a go - and I have a big TV already :)

It definitely helps that this game lives on the hard drive, so it's something I can stick on for 15 minutes without having to fart around digging out the disc or whatever. Means I end up playing it a lot more. Maybe we should make a concerted effort to timetable an ILG game, party up, and properly play together? I did manage to join one of cozen's parties once, but the game he was in was full, and than while I was waiting for a slot to open up my sister knocked on the door, so I had to just drop out again.

how large (harddrive space) is this game, for ps3?
― Great Scott! It's Molecular Man. (Ste), Saturday, 22 August 2009 14:01 (fifteen years ago)
man this'd be fun to do with ppl u knew -- i need to friend ppl up from ILG (if u wd indulge me heh). one of the SECRETS of this game is the squad spawn, finally got wise to that last night and it's a blast. + you can afford to play defensively, unlike a lot of games; if your team is up 3-2 or 4-1 you can just hang out by a flag and dudes will come, rather than leave one open while you go for the last one
the air combat minigame is awesome too. a great minigame in a game that is already very mini, amazing.
one prob, does anyone talk in this game? are the servers still too slammed? or is my headset fucked lol

you can't hear anyone talking because i. you can only hear your 3 squad mates anyway and ii. ppl mostly hang out in parties anyway now on xbl
hit me up on live (cozeny), we can get some squad action w/ledge and jimd; most ppl on my fl moved onto trials/shadow complex but I'm sure they can be persuaded back for some of this

two anyways there gah
anyway
ha so if you just join w/o squadding up, you won't hear anyone? saves bandwidth i guess...
must say i don't get this 'hang out in parties' element, but maybe i don't play at odd times like i think i do.

defending mount suribachi, alone, checking the back path, saw two dudes coming up, waited for them to turn the corner, dropped one with the rifle, during the reload animation threw a grenade, got the other one. fkn love this game.
lots of funny extra awards in this, "savior bonus"?? did i read that right? must be when you kill someone who has injured someone on your team

Started getting to grips with sniping last night. Kept on getting pwned by this one guy hiding in a bunker, but later on I saw him sneakily hiding behind a far distant hill and headshotted him. And got him again in the next match even though he was running around, ha.
― ledge, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 08:28 (fifteen years ago)
i don't have the thumbs for sniping! something is not right with my cns, i can't do it for shit
seriously getting sick of landing in teams with dudes who are not interested in getting or keeping flags. i kinda wish win/loss % was more prominently displayed to de-incentivize just hanging around for kills.
― the people vs peer gynt (goole), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 05:58 (fifteen years ago)
But flags is where the points is at! Although that's still not much incentive to stick around and keep them.
I keep on playing solo, need to start teaming up.

i got leatherneck last night! first time! but i propose a theory: i am still not very good at fps games. if i broke even in CoD4 i was having a good game. i'm routinely at the top of my team in battlefield 1943. this means its audience is not hardcore fps gamers, who are all still playing CoD. or halo.

i'm getting better - or maybe just freeriding from squadding up. still lucky if i get up to a 1:1 kill:death ratio. never really spent any time with the rifle, am ok with sniping but it seems like you just spend too much time out of the action.

I'm a big fan of playing sniper - short kills with the pistol are a blast (esp. against someone brandishing a rifle or machine gun) - but the creme de la creme is finding a pocket that isn't so obvious, for long snipes. I may not get the most kills in the match - but dang if I don't have some 'more satisfying' kills. Nothing like the long headshot while the target is moving and they never know what is coming ...

only battlefield games i have played are 2, vietnam, and bad company (hated the latter).
if u hated bf:bc I don't imagine you'd get along w/this; they're pretty similar. this is just a dumbed downstreamlined/refined dlc version, it's a similar deal tho: destructible environments, lower-than-cod4 framerate and objective-based class warfare. good but yeah as I say very much in the same vein as bf:bc

Whenever I've tried to play this in the last few months, my games have been very stuttery. I guess it's lag, though it feels different from lag in other games. Do you guys have the same problem? Like the game keeps resetting your view jump back 1/2 a second - makes it pretty difficult to get into...
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 08:22 (fifteen years ago)
It happens occassionally, but not that often. I've got a bigger problem with the game just totally freezing, and having to switch my PS3 off and back on again. That seems to happen very often, maybe once in every 5 games.
― nate woolls, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 08:42 (fifteen years ago)
yeah I only get that stutter thing occassionally and it only normally lasts a couple of seconds, in which case it's probably just a lag spike; it used to be a bigger problem (when the game launched and the infrastructure was messed up) and if it persisted I'd jump out and wd be back in a smooth game soon enough
― thurman merman (cozwn), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:57 (fifteen years ago)
Maybe it's worse now (again), because less people are playing? I guess they use roll back to deal with the lag(?), but it's making the game pretty much unplayable (out here in California - maybe more people are playing in Europe). I actually thought maybe something was wrong with my data, so I deleted the game and redownloaded, but it's still the same problems. I'm getting the stutters about every 30-60 seconds (and they last for about five seconds). It's very disorienting to say the least. I've also tried backing out and joining a different match, but so far haven't had any luck getting into a game that doesn't stutter. I never have any problems like this in any other multiplayer game (even Bad Company still runs smooth as butter). Kinda bummed, cause I want to get back into this :(
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 17:30 (fifteen years ago)
