Microsoft has admitted that every one of the 11.6 million Xbox 360 consoles sold in the past 19 months suffers from a design flaw that could cause the device to fail.

i've had my 360 since oblivion came out, and the only problem i've ever had was when my power brick died. they sent me another one within a few days and all was fine.

This is good news! I get three years warranty instead of one, so I can forget about mine conking out a week after warranty for another two years, right?

one month passes...

this whole "red rings of death" scandal is shameful. worst manufactured console in history. unreal. a week and a half ago, a coworker got the rings, so i was like "man i haven't had any problems with mine, knock on wood"...of course, the next night mine goes out...AND i get a text message from the guy, he'd borrowed a 360 from work to play bioshock and THAT one got the rings too!

i've sent mine off, not gotten it back yet.

my friend at work got his back from repair at microsoft...this is the real fucking cherry on top...so he gets it back...is set to play bioshock....turns it on.....RED RINGS...it's STILL broken even after sending it away for close to 2 weeks.

at least they made sure that hardware failure was clearly apparent on the front of the console so you don't spend ten minutes blowing on the disc, etc.

El Tomboto, Monday, 27 August 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

Make sure he's getting the 3 red sectors in the ring, and not 4. 4 means that the video output isn't connected properly. Apparently a buttload of people are sending back perfectly working machines because they don't know which is the "Red Ring of Death" and which is the "Red Ring of Plug In It, You Retard." I assume you and your friend are savvy to this... just putting it out there. For quick reference:

. This means plz plug yr video input in, cos it fell
\ / out or something.

oh yeah it's the three rings. we have like a dozen 360s at work a shitload of which have already gotten fucked.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 27 August 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

MSFT can't calculate MTBF, news to no one

El Tomboto, Monday, 27 August 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

The other day I got the red ring of death on my two-week-old 360. I fretted a bit, then I said "hey, what if I remove that intercooler thing the guy at the EB Games told me to buy and just plug the input straight in". Voila, no more red ring. The intercooler had a burn mark on it because of what a piece of shit it was.

Also, the battery charger (same manufacturer) was broken out of the box. Only one of the two sides worked. Returned it, replaced with a different brand that works fine so far.

polyphonic, Monday, 27 August 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

INTERCOOLERS ARE SO BAD STAY AWAY FROM THEM. Guy at store is idiot. They are actually killing more 360s then they are saving. D: D: D: D:

Just sent mine out to Texas yesterday. Out of warranty, but not out of 3-ring-of-death warranty! W00t.
