I think A Link To The Past is the best game overall, but the one I enjoy playing the most is Wind Waker.

link's awakening, for no reason other than it's the first one i played and i don't dig the forced slow pace of the 3d ones as much.

hmm, i do like the Oracle games although Link to the Past was especially brilliant. i found minish cap great at first, but got frustrated with the over complex dungeons that seemed to go on and on..

I'm going with Ocarina, bloody loved every minute of that.

I was gonna leave out the gameboy games because I despise people who prefer them. I should've just made it a poll of the CD-i games.

I voted Majora's Mask btw. if it was made with the Wind Waker engine it would've been the most perfect game ever.

LttP is kind of a platonic ideal for vidya games in general, so that. if I had another vote I'd probably go w/ Minish Cap which I totally fucking love.

truth bomb: I never really got into the 3d Zeldas at all. and I stayed wayyyyyy the fuq away from Majora's Mask since time limits in games drive me nuts.

majora's mask is amazing though u should really really give it a shot. imo it is the most enchanting and creative of the zeldas.

i really wanted to like Majora's Mask but the damn version on the GameCube collector's disc was terribly emulated and crashed all the time. it really DID feel like Groundhog Day beating the first dungeon so many times before i gave up on it

i played the GC version and it worked fine for me imo

zelda 2 is underrated

I only found the time limits in Majora's Mask to be problematic a couple times... at the beginning when I was still getting used to it, and near the end when I was trying to get one of the masks and had to complete some kind of ridiculous obstacle course.

Other than that it's probably my favourite game of the series. I found it more challenging than Ocarina of Time, but more because of time manipulation and its effect on puzzles/collecting masks/etc and the interactions with the townspeople than because of bosses and dungeons. Also, it was nice to depart from the standard Link/Zelda/Ganon(dorf) fare for a bit.

I really liked Four Swords as well — but it definitely needs to be played with 3+ people in order to reach its full fun potential.

yah ~ its a brutal game im sure youve seen the jpg with editors comments on the rapists lair of a final dungeon and it never really explains or forgives the player just keeps fukken u over and over until u either master it or submit to defeat.

visually i mean its an nes game i dont care really (lol altho i c u rag on startropics upthread which i think is nice looking, considering) but what i really like about is that u truly feel lost in this strange and hostile land. i liked having to sweat for things i liked that the heart pieces were truly hidden and that the towns ppl were inscrutable and cruel. its the loneliest zelda game maybe? and i think the overworld/sidescroller set-up works really well + the rpg elements are interesting and add something to the dungeon crawl.

its not the best zelda sure (i think we both agree that 64-era zelda ftw?) and its not really a puzzle game like the others but its pretty rad for what it is

I would actually rank the N64 ones the lowest (along with Zelda 2) - I think there's way too much era nostalgia over those games and they're the hardest to revisit in comparison to the other Zeldas. CONTROVERSY, I know.

I kind of agree with abanana, except 1/2 are pretty close in my mind (LttP is great, but it loses a little something by being so long/story-driven/worlds too expansive compared to the grace of the original) and I'd replace #3 with Wind Waker, but they're so similar anyways.

Never got around to playing any of the other portable ones for GB/GBA, though.

four swords was good, and i guarantee more people here played that than the cd-i games. it was pretty funny that you included them in the poll though

i think zelda clones often seem deeper than zelda proper, they tend to add more traditional rpg elements such as character levelling and puzzles that go beyond lighting three torches. zeldas are generally fairly easy, straightforward hack n' slashes, it's just that rare touch of gold that shigsy has that elevates the series so high - there's definitely a "feel" to these games that is sometimes more important than depth of gameplay

Link's Awakening was the first Zelda I ever played, I still remember when me and M1ke Syrn1ck got left behind on a class trip and he showed me how to cheat in the game by pressing start just as you were exiting a screen and you could get access to locked rooms and stuff this way
