I have gone for meh to woah, after seeing the gametrailers dev walkthrough
looks great to me
anyone else picking it up?
― cozwn (webinar), Saturday, 8 August 2009 20:41 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, looks lovely, and the build-your-own-platforms aspect is a great idea. When's it out? Soon I guess?
― JimD, Sunday, 9 August 2009 08:36 (sixteen years ago)
trials HD this weds, sc the weds after
― cozwn (webinar), Sunday, 9 August 2009 08:48 (sixteen years ago)
I'm the opposite. Was interested in the game, but after watching the recommended gametrailers walkthru, feel like it looks kind of blah - partially because the doofus hyping the game turned me off - partially because of the story elements and janky animation (plus "picking up a backpack gives you the ability to climb"). Will be interested to read real life impressions
― Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 9 August 2009 16:14 (sixteen years ago)
oh I watched the gt thing w/the sound off so no doofus spoiling it for me; I see what you mean about 'janky' animation but I think it looks plenty nice anyway
I guess I'm just in the right at the mo mood for an 8 hour HD metroidvania w/achievements, collectibles and achievements
― cozwn (webinar), Sunday, 9 August 2009 20:53 (sixteen years ago)
You don't need any more achievements.
― JimD, Monday, 10 August 2009 00:59 (sixteen years ago)
I'm curious too, but kind of agree with Jeff, it seems to have the most generic "space marine" style, no personality. Not writing it off yet though.
― Nhex, Monday, 10 August 2009 01:04 (sixteen years ago)
hm, Peter David script!
― im a fucking unicorn you douchebags (forksclovetofu), Monday, 10 August 2009 04:52 (sixteen years ago)
haha really? well... still skeptical, besides Ghostbusters (sort of) I can't think of a major case where someone outside the industry was brought in to write and it was noticeable. How was Dead Space?
― Nhex, Monday, 10 August 2009 12:11 (sixteen years ago)
there's ppl who rep for that warren ellis game. hostile waters?
― thomp, Monday, 10 August 2009 12:12 (sixteen years ago)
dead space was amazing tho it was more for the atmosphere (sound, lighting) than the writing
― cozwn (webinar), Monday, 10 August 2009 12:23 (sixteen years ago)
dead space got boring fast

Eurogamer love it:

I'm pretty excited for this now.
― JimD, Monday, 17 August 2009 10:34 (sixteen years ago)
it looks right up my alley, i love super metroidy games. although a friend lent me gears of war 2 and the orange box, so that might take up the approx. 1.5 hours of video game time i have per week.

― cozwn (webinar), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 23:05 (sixteen years ago)
I like it a lot.
― JimD, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 23:10 (sixteen years ago)
I don't think this game is for me.

will try the demo when i get a freakin' chance
― ledge, Thursday, 20 August 2009 17:59 (sixteen years ago)
I like it a lot and have completed it for a first time; took about 6 hours on hardcore but I didn't get 100%
the best thing is that the world is very coherent, unlike most of the castlevanias, it really feels like one complex despite the variation in backgrounds
― cozwn, Thursday, 20 August 2009 18:11 (sixteen years ago)
I did think it was funny that orson scott card's army was marching on san francisco lolol~~
― cozwn, Thursday, 20 August 2009 18:15 (sixteen years ago)
couldnt get past the second stage in the demo. not sure if this is my fault or the games fault.

so... apparently you can play through the whole game without unlocking it. defeat the first boss in the trial game and then pause and load last save/checkpoint and you can play on from there. you can't load from the main menu though so you're going to have to play in one sitting/without turning the xbox off
still, neat, for fence-sitters

― Ømår Littel (Jordan), Friday, 21 August 2009 14:24 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, apparently there is a thing about this: http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=24627
all down to OSC's involvement, but apparently having Peter David involved, the kinda writer who would deliberately subvert shit like this, makes me think that they have it in hand.
Still, I'll wait for the PC version.
― kingfish, Sunday, 23 August 2009 18:19 (sixteen years ago)
Didn't even know there was going to be a PC port, that's cool. I admit I am slightly conflicted about the above (and Card really is a hateful ass) but I'll probably just forget about it anyway, like Bionic Commando: Rearmed.
― Nhex, Sunday, 23 August 2009 21:44 (sixteen years ago)
yeah this is ok i guess but y'know what I'm just not that into platformers. Also the plot and dialogue are atrocious.
― ledge, Monday, 24 August 2009 09:37 (sixteen years ago)
you game for plot and dialogue? lol
this game is pretty great, best thing on arcade so far. but getting shot from off screen pisses me off to no end.
― bnw, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 02:50 (sixteen years ago)
tbf you'd think w/two 'serious' writers on board for plot and dialogue it'd at least be passable but no
― cozwn, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 08:18 (sixteen years ago)
This game keeps wrong footing me - I think I usually play games with the assumption that I'll only play them through once, and I like to see everything on that one playthrough. So I'm used to constantly checking out secret passages, hidden rooms, etc etc, before going down the more obvious corridors which lead into the next part of the game. Trouble with Shadow Complex is that those hidden passages often ARE the ones that lead on to the next area, and so I keep finding I have to go back and check out the dead ends. To be fair, there's still usually a pickup or something in there, to make that worthwhile.
I also keep getting Scandalous my Mis-teeq in my head while I'm playing it, because of the sound the game makes when you go into a save room.

liking this so far, but is there a trick to diagonal aiming? it seems so annoying to pull off.

ok, this is pretty fun. i got used to the auto-aim and i'm now zooming around with the suit + missiles + speed run etc.
the only thing that bothers me now is when you grab a mounted gun and go into first-person -- no option for inverted look!

so this is discounted now? guess I'll get it?

i really dig this. straight metroid rip, often to the point of "get your own ideas dudes", but a lot of fun. enjoying it more than the Modern Warfare 2 campaign i'm currently working through.
― circa1916, Saturday, 26 December 2009 04:07 (fifteen years ago)
What kind of machine do you need to run it?
― kingfish, Saturday, 26 December 2009 04:32 (fifteen years ago)
Oh christ, they still haven't come out with a pc port yet. That's dumb.
― kingfish, Saturday, 26 December 2009 04:39 (fifteen years ago)
this is incredibly great but I got stuck going back for claire and am having a hell of a time getting back to the game proper.
― forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 07:11 (fifteen years ago)
i ended up loving this game btw (enough to finally play gears of war 2 after i finished it), although i thought the end came really suddenly. the challenge mode is surprisingly fun too, although i def did not finish the last set.
― rinse the lemonade (Jordan), Friday, 22 January 2010 18:15 (fifteen years ago)
I just now got this, played it, and beat it, all within the last couple of days. Is it lame that I had more fun playing a Metroidvania throwback then just about any other new game from the past few years? The length of the game was just about perfect (for me at least) too - just as I started to get a little too used to it and the challenge was dipping a bit, it escalated up to the final battle and ended.
