No. Seriously. What the hell is this thing? And it's being made by the Deus Ex guy???

There isn't anything to discuss yet, is there? A couple of possible pieces of concept art and that it is on the Wii.
I might care once some actual information is released.

The question is will Warren Spector actually deliver or spend the decade at developer talks simmering in frustration again?
But yes, it is too early, though the artwork is really intriguing, who knows how far off they are from this happening, if it actually does...

"As Game Informer has been hyping for weeks now, their latest issue features a huge spread on Epic Mickey. You get your first look at in-game screens and brand-new art, as well as Mickey's redesign, and a host of other characters. Obviously, I cannot show you that here, but thanks to Hero of Legend, I can give you the first details!
- Mickey's appearance is much, much closer to his original debut style- Disney was the one to approach Spector- Spector originally was against the idea of creating a Mickey game, because he said that he didn't do kids games- Spector changed his mind when Disney said that they were looking for someone to 'reinvigorate' Mickey- Disney had to get back the rights to Oswald before he could be used in this game- the sorcerer Yensid creates a pen-and-paper world for his forgotten creations, which is where Oswald lives- this world is similar to Walt Disney World- Mickey enters this world through a magic mirror, and accidentally spills paint and paint thinner on the drawing of this world. Mickey escapes before Yensid finds out.- The spill that Mickey caused ends up turning the drawing into a twisted version of what was originally created.- the Phantom Blot ends up taking over this world- many years later, after Mickey becomes successful, he re-enters the mirror and sees what has happened to the world. The Phantom Blot drags Mickey into the world, which is where your adventure begins- use the Wiimote to paint in buildings, platforms and more- swipe away enemies with the Wiimote when using paint thinner- create/destroy the world as you go along- Junction Point took hundreds of photos while at Disney World in order to capture the essence of the park, and translate ideas into the game- play the game as you like, either destroying everything in sight, or taking the hero's route. It's completely up to you, and you can mix-and-match play styles- Gremlin Village is reminiscent of 'It's a Small World'- Mickey's appearance and stance will change based on the way you play the game- trade some items for health- Pete returns, and at one point attacks you with a huge zepplin- Donald Duck animatronic pieces are scattered throughout one portion of the game. Collect them to put him back together.- Spector wants this game to scare kids, in some ways- the game will also have funny parts- Spector calls the game world's visuals 'the bastard child of Tim Burton and Disney'- elements of platforming, exploration and role-playing- go into the inner-workings of some levels and rides- visit the gears and mechanics underneath the 'It's a Small World' ride, complete with an eerie re-imagining of the music- enter movie screens to move from in-game island to island- movie screen transitions put you into a 2d world, where you'll revisit some of Mickey's old cartoons- find sketches, and bring them to life with your paintbrush- sketches can be activated to give you new powers (clock sketch to slow time, TV sketch to distract enemies, and more)- collect 'E-Tickets' to enter rides, and use as a form of currency to buy power-ups- Jim Dooley 'Pushing Daises' is doing the soundtrack
Warren Spector on Mickey
"I want him to be a hero...and I want to remind him that it's okay to behave badly."
Warren on Oswald
"All he really wants is to be loved by Walt Disney. In the end, the Blot won the war and pushed Oswald into hiding and exile."
Warren on the Gremlins
"The Gremlins are the only forces of good in the world that can continue to fight against the Blot.
Warren on the Bunny Kids
"These are going to be the breakout stars of the game. Mark my words."
Warren on the Buddies (Donald, Goofy, ect.)
"Oswald is trying to recreate Mickey's life, so he has the Mad Doctor build these animatronic versions of his buddies."
Warren on the Mad Doctor
"He's from an early 30's cartoon that is pretty swell."
Warren on the Phantom Blot
"The Phantom Blot has been a consistent villain since 1939. He's just been lame."
Warren on the Blotlings
"They're the popcorn unit. You need something that the player can just swat away. They're supposed to be funny, silly and stupid."
Warren on the Beetleworx
"In order to deal with these guys, you have to erase their painted bits to get to the vulnerable inert spots underneath.""
- use the Wiimote to paint in buildings, platforms and more- swipe away enemies with the Wiimote when using paint thinner

I read this thread before I went to sleep last night and at one point in the dream I was playing this game or something. I just remember the Bunny Kids except they were Bunny Boys that had chairs for faces. They were actually pretty cute.

did you read the interview? :P
― coz (webinar), Saturday, 24 October 2009 10:57 (fifteen years ago)
I agree, tho
--
"I really want to scare kids. I’m gonna keep saying that until I’m blue in the face. It’s going to be a funny game. Honestly, I bet a lot of fans are really gonna be upset with me about this, but I really want to do something lighter. I don’t want to do dark and heavy. I want people to smile when they’re playing, not get all scrunched up with adrenaline. I want people to smile when they’re playing a damned game for a change. This seems like a perfect opportunity to do that, but thrown in there every once in a while, there’s going to be an “Oh my god!” scare. That’s what I’m shooting for. We’ll see if I succeed. That’s a tough thing – funny and then scary. But we know Disney can do it, so we’ll see if we can do it in a game."

the interview was a bit tl;dr for a hangover morning :D
I just think of this stuff like Kingdom Hearts and it's borderline furry/slash territory for me. Do not want. Other peoples' mmv, obv.

ha, yeah, it is a long interview I agree. read it w/mad men on in the corner and a nice cup of coffee. really worth reading tho, if you have any interest in this game and/or disney. spector seems very clued in and up on disney's history and he comes across as very smart; you can't not at least have faith in the game when he's the designer
― coz (webinar), Saturday, 24 October 2009 11:07 (fifteen years ago)
i like the dude well enough, I'm sort of intrigued enough to have this reaction. I'll probly check it when the tom-toms in my head shut up.

very interesting interview, even if most of it is Spector giving a history lesson. thanks for the link

― Tilda Swinton Wreck Up A Dread Dub (admrl), Thursday, 9 December 2010 00:14 (fourteen years ago)
here is what IGN said
Can a stellar story, fantastic characters, incredible cutscenes, and a solid core gameplay mechanic overcome numerous, fundamental problems with controls, the camera, and even continuity? In the end Warren Spector’s team has created a mightily impressive foundation. They’ve managed to get the toughest stuff right – it seemed almost impossible to make Mickey Mouse matter once again. They’ve even managed to take a nearly dormant character in Oswald and introduce him in a spectacular way, making him one of the most memorable video game characters of the year. And yet the “easier” stuff – finding a camera system that works, finding a control scheme that’s suitable – is flawed to the point where the larger experience becomes damaged. If story and character matter more to you than technical details, or if you and your family are Disney fans, many of these problems won’t matter. Ultimately, the positive elements of Epic Mickey do manage to make this worth a shot. Going in with the proper level of expectation should manage to keep some of the WiiMote throwing to a minimum… just keep that wrist strap tight.
I am still finishing and enjoying SUPER MARIO GALAXY, the first one

that it's broken, basically
― macaroni rascal (polyphonic), Thursday, 9 December 2010 00:18 (fourteen years ago)
really? I tried it and it didn't seem broken. you can paint stuff, and unpaint stuff. and there's this rabbit...?

Not too sure what IGN is on about. I think the camera works fine for the most part, with only rare instances where you can't swing it behind you or go into first-person mode. Otherwise, you can move it all around you, though it's a bit slower than I'd normally like. The control scheme is basic but there are only two times it's irritated me: first, when trying to jump near a NPC, who I then end up talking to, because A is both jump and 'interact with NPC'; second, when trying to paint/unpaint a chunk of scenery on the ground and not being able to paint it because for whatever reason the game doesn't seem to understand where I'm pointing (it's hard to explain, but thankfully so far this hasn't rendered crucial parts of the game unplayable).
If there's anything that has me near Wiimote-throwing point, it's the poor quest management and the way every task seems to turn into a fetch quest. A number of non-essential quests 'expire' if you neglect to complete them during a specific moment/area of the game (the world isn't fully explorable; I don't think you can retrace your steps and revisit old areas unless it's part of the storyline moving forward), and I find the quests themselves are all kind of redundant. Collecting 5 spark plugs turns into 5 fetch quests for various NPCs who all look similar and are easy to forget/mistake for one another. It's all 'oh yeah, I have a spark plug, but you can't have it unless you throw these bunnies into a vacuum tube,' or 'yeah, I'll give you this statue, but you have to find me a flower so I can woo Henrietta,' then 'I'll help you arrange a bouquet of flowers, but you have to find me three flowers first,' then AARRRGHGHGH WHERE TF ARE THE STUPID FLOWERS JUST LET ME GET TO THE NEXT PART OF THE GAME ALREADY. Okay I love quests and adventure games but seriously this is almost too much even for me.
But it's a very nice game to look at and I'll stick with it for a while longer.

early levels are annoying with constant text box clues that you have to A away before proceeding
ok ok I get it just let me play the game or figure it out myself

there is a rabbit though
i watched several hours of a playthrough of this on youtube. the devs should have played some games from the past decade. it feels like an N64 or early PS2 platformer.
