funny farm, Friday, 27 July 2007 03:07 (eighteen years ago)

Nice, except for the voice-over

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 27 July 2007 07:47 (eighteen years ago)

2009 ??!!!

Ste, Friday, 27 July 2007 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

Do you want it fast or do you want it good?

marmotwolof, Friday, 27 July 2007 10:32 (eighteen years ago)

why is nobody excited about umbrella chronicles? it looks absolutely choice

creme1, Friday, 27 July 2007 11:53 (eighteen years ago)

because i only just heard about it, from you :)

Ste, Friday, 27 July 2007 12:16 (eighteen years ago)

This might be the game that sells me a PS3 or 360 (hopefully by '09, I'll be able to get one for, like, a hundred bucks, rite?).

Jordan, Friday, 27 July 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

Pretty impressive. But I'm wondering, how come in this day and age of motion capture and 20 million texture and bump-mapped polygons, game characters still look and act like thunderbirds puppets?

ledge, Friday, 27 July 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

Uncanny valley!

polyphonic, Monday, 30 July 2007 06:06 (eighteen years ago)

Uncanny valley works in favour of RE titles; the more people look like zombies the better

webber, Monday, 30 July 2007 06:23 (eighteen years ago)

This looked pretty neat.

kingfish, Monday, 30 July 2007 07:47 (eighteen years ago)

there's something a little weird about watching that trailer, or is it just me? all those shots of a muscly white guy slaughtering african villages got me queasy, zombies or no

s1ocki, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, that part of it definitely bothered me.

polyphonic, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

it's haiti, fwiw

Resident Evil 5 is SO RACIST: The idiocy begins

funny farm, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

that is the dumbest shit i have ever read.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

yep.

funny farm, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

the village voice article and comments are actually reasonable and intelligible.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

like, wau

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

oh god this comment is gold:

I can't wait until your next article calling for the removal of all pool tables in the country because we can't have a game where a White ball pushes all the colored balls off the Green Earth table... can we?

Ste, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

there are so many fucking violently stupid comments both there and on all those idiot game blogs ARGH.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

I reminds me of the reaction to San Andreas. Oh no, black people and guns in a video game? Time to write an article!

polyphonic, Thursday, 2 August 2007 00:10 (eighteen years ago)

Surprised no one mentioned that part in Vice City where it says "Kill all the Haitians!" onscreen during a mission.

marmotwolof, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:11 (eighteen years ago)

i think what bothers me most about this game is having to play as that fag chris redfield

otm. fanboys of any stripe really fucking suck. no perspective about anything. "you raped my childhood whaaaaaaaa"

i'd like to play a video game where you are george lucas shooting mobs of pissed fanboys and when you beat the game you shoot yourself.

the post and comments about this at Destructoid have reminded me why I mostly can't stand that site.

I love over-the-top gamer defensiveness.

Garrett Martin, Thursday, 10 April 2008 21:12 (seventeen years ago)

I can see why ppl be offended < I will play the shit out of this

bnw, Thursday, 10 April 2008 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

If it looks good, I'll play it. but shit, I still haven't finished either of the RE4's that I have.

Garrett Martin, Thursday, 10 April 2008 21:17 (seventeen years ago)

GAWD, I HATE political correctness, it's so awful - now I might have to consider that other races might live on the African continent and have to kill them in this video game, too! I don't want to think about this stuff while I'm playing a video game. Curse those kneejerk PC liberals for ruining everything!

The Resident Evil 5 Trailer is Sooooo Raaaaaaaaaaacist!!!

s1ocki, Monday, 8 December 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

czn - did the Japanese demo have an option to select the new control scheme too? There are supposed to be two schemes now - the new one being more western, right (not that I really mind the old one)

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 8 December 2008 17:22 (seventeen years ago)

um... the so-called "shooter" control scheme? it defaults to that, I think; I did notice you could strafe (but not strafe and shoot)

I'm in two minds; do I really want resi. evil to adopt dead space/GoW controls and lose some of its flavour but add finesse control or do the 'broken' controls add to the game's tension and character and ultimately make it more resi?

czn (cozwn), Monday, 8 December 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

omg lolololololololol

What games do you think have surpassed RE4, hi dere? (note that I have none of the current generation systems) Do you mean stuff like Gears of War or have better survival horror games come out

I have no personal stake in this as I haven't played any of the games in question; I'm just going off of reviews, which frequently mention Gears of War. Also, from everything I've read/heard, Left 4 Dead is currently the gold standard for survival horror shooters.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Thursday, 19 March 2009 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

I think the major issue is that even if the plot itself isn't racist (a nerd friend tried to defend it to me as it's not that the African men and women are evil, but that evil corporations feel they can experiment on them with impunity), it's visually hard to square with a history of racist imagery. Not to mention that unlike, say, Code: Veronica and earlier games, the zombies are pretty conscious. They talk, think, use tools, etc. So it's not like you're killing zoned out body husks. You're killing zombies who more or less are very aggressive, stupid, thoughtless human beings. Ie: Various stereotypes about Africans going back. It reminded me of those passages of Heart of Darkness that always come out in PoCo lit classes.

Mordy, Thursday, 19 March 2009 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

btw i've realized that the stand & shoot system that so many people seem to hate is probably the reason i love these games. when i've tried gears for war or whatever it seems like too much, i'm always running around trying to deal with a ton of controls. i'm sure i'd get used to it, but it fits my old-school mentality better to run away, find a spot to make a stand, and concentrate on aiming. it seems more "realistic" too, for whatever that's worth.

i'm grand like auto theft 3 (Jordan), Thursday, 19 March 2009 19:22 (seventeen years ago)

Also, from everything I've read/heard, Left 4 Dead is currently the gold standard for survival horror shooters.

It's really a different animal entirely. RE4/5 are the sort of game where you're like FUCK I ONLY HAVE TEN BULLETS FUCK FUCK FUCK and Left 4 Dead is like FUCK THERE ARE EIGHT MILLION ZOMBIES ATTACKING ME (but I have plenty of ammo).

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 March 2009 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

There is dead space in the running though as well. I havent played RE5, but if it is not absolute garbage, they really need to start thinking harder about how to choose game demos, because that demo made me totally not interested in buying this.

Hey that thing you like? I hate it. (jjjusten), Thursday, 19 March 2009 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

dunno what it is exactly but all the RE games, on some 'feel' level, slot in right next to all the FF games as being flimsy tedious garbage to me

goole, Thursday, 19 March 2009 19:56 (seventeen years ago)

Dead Space! That's the other one I was forgetting. (like I said, I don't play these)

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Thursday, 19 March 2009 19:58 (seventeen years ago)

although the more i think about it my frustrations did mostly come from mechanics. locked in place shooting and pressing a button for ammo pick up are just straight up outmoded now, and any talk about how its an integral part of the strategy of the game just sounds like weak-ass justification for a lazy design team to me. xpost

i thought RE4 was kind of great, esp the wii port*, but i have hated every other RE i've played, so maybe im just not their target audience.

* note: not the dumb waggle-your-wii-stick to escape the boulder old school track and field bullshit tho. that sucked.

Hey that thing you like? I hate it. (jjjusten), Thursday, 19 March 2009 19:59 (seventeen years ago)

I thought you'd be a big fan of waggle-your-wii-stick

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Thursday, 19 March 2009 20:03 (seventeen years ago)

(oh total aside, do you have Wii Mario Kart? I just got it for my dad and told him he could race ppl online with it to entice him to hook his Wii up to the network, so if you have it maybe you could spend some time pwning him)

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Thursday, 19 March 2009 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

ocked in place shooting and pressing a button for ammo pick up are just straight up outmoded now, and any talk about how its an integral part of the strategy of the game just sounds like weak-ass justification for a lazy design team to me.

i thought RE4 was kind of great

well yeah but it also came out 4 years ago.

howabout 'in real life it takes a certain amount of distraction from your previous set course of action to pick stuff up'

imagine you automatically picked up every portable article you came within it a foot of in real life, it's be pretty annoying

i think enabling shooting-whilst-moving in RE would be okay as long as it was less accurate and therefore entailed ammo wasting

problem is if it's still using shouldercam to aim (which works fine with me) then the controls are set up wrong, and you'd have to have a second set of controls for shooting-whilst-moving. which would feel a bit broken.

thomp, Thursday, 19 March 2009 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

again im making this argument solely from the demo (which suuuuuucked, and im assuming was unrepresentative since you dudes dug it), but there were just so many things wrong with it (lumbering zombies with idiotic AI, that infuriating pick up ammo for your partner nonsense, no apparent reason for certain events to end they just kind of did) - still, the point is that the game just felt uncompetetive with the other stuff that is out there, outside of really stunning graphics, and RE4 didn't. also the tension was just off, and the "uh oh zombies" moments were so telegraphed and awkward and unexciting.

im sure that the game as a whole must have its merits, but all the demo did was show some glaring faults.

xpost: re: reality of picking stuff up - well yeah but dude theres lots of stuff in video games that sacrifice realism in favor of not being boring, and really when yer shooting a bunch of crazed african zombies that a multinational corporation has poisoned with magical infection of undead juice, we arent really operating in the combat sim territory to begin with.

Hey that thing you like? I hate it. (jjjusten), Thursday, 19 March 2009 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

and actually, if you wanted full on item picking up realism, those moments where you pick up ammo for your partner should have been accompanied with a "tap her on the shoulder and hand her some bullets in the middle of a firefight" minigame i guess.

Hey that thing you like? I hate it. (jjjusten), Thursday, 19 March 2009 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

the Wii version of this should require you to throw your Wiimote at the television to kill the zombies

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Thursday, 19 March 2009 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

"within a foot of", no it.

looked at some clips on the internet: this is one of those games where some poor soul has been tasked with creating a boob-jiggle algorithm, which kind of makes me want to play it less. (wesker's chest otoh looks like it is made of tin)

xpost yah but 'press x to pick up the green herb' is setting the boredom barrier pretty low, it's not like you have to play a picking-the-green-herb-up QTE or anything

double xpost ha oops.

thomp, Thursday, 19 March 2009 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

and again, DUDES I HAVE NOT ACTUALLY PLAYED THE GAME YET so it isnt like im speaking from some great position of expertise, i just know that some shit about what i saw of the game drove me nuts.

xpostssss

Hey that thing you like? I hate it. (jjjusten), Thursday, 19 March 2009 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

theres probably a great thread in trying to get at what level of realism people expect from games, because lots of times when that line gets crossed (either way) is when the all caps RANTOTHONS start flying.

Hey that thing you like? I hate it. (jjjusten), Thursday, 19 March 2009 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

i played co-op, but we did yell at each other when we picked up each other's ammo (ie i always used a shotgun so i had dibs on shells, and he covered the machine guns and rifles). we'd have to find a safe place and trade. so yeah, it was pretty realistic!

xp

i'm grand like auto theft 3 (Jordan), Thursday, 19 March 2009 20:42 (seventeen years ago)

"theres probably a great thread in trying to get at what level of realism people expect from games, because lots of times when that line gets crossed (either way) is when the all caps RANTOTHONS start flying"

i was thinking about this earlier when i was killing some low level enemies for item drops in the most recent castlevania and got really annoyed about the 'if there is poison there is ONE type of poison IN THE WORLD and it SCALES ACCORDING TO YOUR MAXIMUM HIT POINTS' rule, actually. because obviously two minutes later i realised how retarded it was that that was the deal-breaker.

thomp, Thursday, 19 March 2009 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

the classic example is one of the LOTR fighter adventure games where there's a run-away-from-the-encroaching-flames challenge and you have to take the long way around these 8" tall stone barriers because lol there's no jumping in this game! or stepping up too high apptly.

having something like auto ammo pickup seem ok to me; about as ok as being able to carry 1000k shots of each of the 9 guns you're currently carrying. but not being able to shoot while walking? i don't understand how that is a satisfactory experience. you have to have enough signifiers of real life in order to be scared, right?

goole, Thursday, 19 March 2009 21:08 (seventeen years ago)

in my limited gun-shooting experience, it's hard enough to have good aim while standing still, much less while running.

i'm grand like auto theft 3 (Jordan), Thursday, 19 March 2009 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

not for super soldier zombie killer dudes tho - the whole point of "combat" handgun shooting is to develop the ability to shoot while moving.

Hey that thing you like? I hate it. (jjjusten), Thursday, 19 March 2009 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

jjjusten, did you play the dead space demo? cuz srsly

lo (cozwn), Thursday, 19 March 2009 23:19 (seventeen years ago)

yeah good point, i thought the demo was crap and then when i bought the game after hearing raves from ILG it was great so obv i am open to having my mind changed. altho with dead space the problem was more throwing you into the middle of something with zero context, almost seemed like they just grabbed a random spot and just chopped it out. the things that bug me about the RE5 demo seem more systemic i guess.

Hey that thing you like? I hate it. (jjjusten), Thursday, 19 March 2009 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

yeah in fact this is what i said about Dead Space

oh yeah and i think the shitty shitty demo probably did more to keep people from buying this than it did to enhance sales. totally unrepresentative of what makes this game great.

― VISION QUEST TO KNOCK YOU UP (John Justen), Tuesday, December 30, 2008 4:10 PM (2 months ago)

which is maybe the same problem with this. i feel like sometimes the demos are just plain lazy or selected by dudes that dont know how to pick the right thing because they're too involved or something.

Hey that thing you like? I hate it. (jjjusten), Thursday, 19 March 2009 23:47 (seventeen years ago)

i bet they just have deadlines and are forced to put out a demo before shit is ready

i'm grand like auto theft 3 (Jordan), Thursday, 19 March 2009 23:58 (seventeen years ago)

dead space demo came out like a month after the game which made it especially wtf

lo (cozwn), Friday, 20 March 2009 00:17 (sixteen years ago)

for those thatve played it is this better or worse than left 4 dead? im kinda tempted but at the same time ive got a bunch of games hanging around unplayed already and i dont want to cop this and end up w/it half finished

Lamp, Friday, 20 March 2009 00:46 (sixteen years ago)

re5 - slower, prettier, srs buisness, encourages co-op
l4d - faster, more fluid, campier, nearly demands co-op

the over the shoulder controls and stop & shoot would be fine except I've already had two fights that require you to run around, which is totally retarded because 1) you have to run away from boss-guy and then when you have enough room, turn around and shoot and 2) you can pretty much run circles around a zombie without them touching you as long as you don't stop moving.

bnw, Friday, 20 March 2009 00:59 (sixteen years ago)

l4d is kinda all time top 50 but I found it too stressy and time-consuming so I punted it; the game is funnnn but just too much

re5 is slower and bite-sized so you can get on with your life and also play it

lo (cozwn), Friday, 20 March 2009 08:37 (sixteen years ago)

eh sounds like ill wait for a lull in my to play list before i cop this

Lamp, Friday, 20 March 2009 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

didnt re4 have that awesome mechanic where you could do an instant 180 turn? does 5 have this?

s1ocki, Friday, 20 March 2009 16:07 (sixteen years ago)

yup

i'm grand like auto theft 3 (Jordan), Friday, 20 March 2009 16:07 (sixteen years ago)

i'm grand like auto theft 3 (Jordan), Friday, 20 March 2009 16:08 (sixteen years ago)

pretty hard to be sufficiently racist w/out tbf

lo (cozwn), Friday, 20 March 2009 16:13 (sixteen years ago)

1UP: This is something I haven't really discussed with you before, but some places are starting to focus a lot of time on the race aspect of RE5. In short, some people think that there are racist elements to this game. Not necessarily a hatred-type of racism, but more of a sheltered perspective -- an ignorant type of racism. The last time I checked, there were black people in Africa, and you do present a pretty diverse selection of enemies including people who appear to be of Muslim persuasion, although to be fair, there are parts where you do meet some shocking "tribal Africans" with spears. I could see how some people might suggest that this is an African nation as viewed through the eyes of a Japanese developer, but you said that you've gone to Africa, visited these places for research, and tried to present a realistic blend of people indigenous to the game setting. What is your reaction to the buzz going around?

JT: It's just like you said, and I think because you've played the game and you know what's in it you understand where we're coming from in the making of this game. I hope that everybody understands that we didn't set out with the intention of making anything racist. Naturally, I think if people were to make that type of game, that would not be a good thing. We are in the business of making entertainment and the elements in the game are a natural result of that.

^^^i'm pretty sure none of those sentences actually mean anything?

Nhex, Saturday, 28 March 2009 02:13 (sixteen years ago)

you can't make this shit up.

1UP: Did you just keep saying, "Hotter. No, hotter. HOTTER." (Laughter) Did you have an actress or anything in mind as a reference point? As in, "She's got to be Beyoncé hot."

JT: What we were going for was not Beyoncé-level hot, but hotter than Angelina Jolie. We had so many variations of her face. We had a lot of versions where the only thing changed was that her lips were 5mm bigger or 10mm bigger.

Nhex, Saturday, 28 March 2009 02:16 (sixteen years ago)

skin slightly lighter, slightly darker

this guy evan narcisse had a good article on crispygamer about the racism 'controversy' in re re5. then i looked him up and he has a blog called 'the freedom suite' and he's writing a book with mos def! he is my new favourite videogames journalist.

thomp, Saturday, 28 March 2009 10:43 (sixteen years ago)

why is it a 'controversy' in quotes and not a controversy, no quotes

s1ocki, Saturday, 28 March 2009 15:32 (sixteen years ago)

um, because i haven't seen it mentioned outside the videogames media yet mainly

also because it's all kind of absurdly straightforward. thinking about it i should have said hoo-hah, no quotes. or folderol, no quotes.
