the thing is it's not just nintendo who's capable of developing for the platform, they're not even the ones who are going to make it or break it down the line. I think a lot of third parties are still recovering and gearing up to make content for the system, they're just behind the curve because everybody bet on it being two gamecubes duct taped together and not the D$$$$$ redux.

Complaining about Wii Fit and Nintendo's "abandonment" of the hardcore gamer seems a little premature and silly, just because they're taking the initiative to bring games to the retirement home instead of wasting time pandering to the Madden/Square/Halo posse that left them for dead. What do people expect?

El Tomboto, Thursday, 23 August 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

this hardcore vs casual false binary that people at kotaku etc drone on about bores me senseless. i mean, have you ever tried to read the gaming comments on digg? what really annoys me though is when these fanboys (ugh that word) start with the bizarre sense of entitlement - "we helped nintendo through the dark days, where is my cookie", its like the kid who finds out that he has to share the toys with the other kids in playgroup, so he throws a tantrum.

I'm just like you've already had a new zelda, you're getting a new mario and a new metroid in the next few months, what the fuck else do you want? who ARE you people?

El Tomboto, Thursday, 23 August 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

oh right, halo humpers

El Tomboto, Thursday, 23 August 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

they care because it apparently works: global wii sales > global 360 sales now, lock thread

Will M., Thursday, 23 August 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

new zelda, you're getting a new mario and a new metroid in the next few months, what the fuck else do you want?

New Earthbound, new Kid Icarus, new Pilotwings, new F-Zero, new Punch Out, new Pro Wrestling, new StarTropics, more new IPs that aren't minigames. There are a lot of things in Nintendo's back catalog that those fans would like to see besides Mario/Metroid/Zelda. Fuck Halo.

marmotwolof, Thursday, 23 August 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

new Pro Wrestling

this

adam, Thursday, 23 August 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

That would be fucking awesome on Wii. Though the new WWE Wii game is supposed to implement a lot of unique Wiimotisms, I'm sure Nintendo could do it better. I want to see the return of Fighter Hayabusa, King Slender, Starman, Kin Corn Karn, The Amazon, Giant Panther, and Great Puma!

marmotwolof, Thursday, 23 August 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

I'm here to say that the hardcore gamer crowd is NOT static, there are plenty of twelve and thirteen year old pokemaniacs that are just as hardcore as I ever was at that age.

forksclovetofu, Friday, 24 August 2007 05:36 (eighteen years ago)

As a drunken hardcore game, I just want narrative. Or fun. Or cartoony weirdness on the level of "Dark Cloud 2". it's rare enough on consoles to get anything approaching Obsidian/bioware/black isle levels, but somebody's got to give it a shot before long. A wii earthbound would work, but fuck, the fan-sub of the already released game will still probably take another year.

Still, guys like Fumito Ueda & Junichi Hosono and the rest of the Ico crowd are still out there. Let's see what they can do with this platform.

kingfish, Friday, 24 August 2007 07:05 (eighteen years ago)

And also to say that _my_ personal console franchise favorite, aside from Zelda, are metroidy Castlevania titles, and I seriously don't see how they'd make one for the wii without fucking it up.

kingfish, Friday, 24 August 2007 07:08 (eighteen years ago)

dammit, "drunken hardcore gamer"

kingfish, Friday, 24 August 2007 07:09 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder, regarding marmot's post, if a lot of that stuff isn't in the works but being kept close real close to the chest at the moment. After galaxy and metroid prime 3, what else is in the pipe?

also seriously NiGHTS better not suck

El Tomboto, Monday, 27 August 2007 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

New Earthbound...

...in AMERICAN please.

nickalicious, Monday, 27 August 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

Is the answer for Nintendo really to just continually plop out revised editions of old Nintendo games? I mean, *I* would love to play a new Kid Icarus or a new etc., but I also was a hardcore Nintendo dork as a kid. I would prefer to see some new ideas that appeal to kids and grannies but also to dorks like me, and hopefully not just infinite sets of mini games.

polyphonic, Monday, 27 August 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

I did say "more new IPs that aren't minigames," but my point was there are perfectly good Nintendo IPs that haven't been continually plopped out, and there's no reason why kids wouldn't still like them with updated graphics and gameplay! I don't think Nintendo has all that many new ideas for games at this point besides, uh, Wii Fit so it would be interesting to revisit some of the more obscure IPs IMO.

marmotwolof, Monday, 27 August 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

Even Wii Fit isn't a new idea, just a refined one. It's the power pad mk 2.

What are some examples of Wii-only titles from non-Nintendo game developers that are any good? I can't think of one, but I don't have deep familiarity with what's on the Wii. Almost everything I want to play is a Nintendo product or cross-platform.

there is a lot of cross-platform stuff but the preview page shows how much exclusive third party stuff is already in the pipe. right now, the other publishers are treading water, waiting for november and afterwards, when the userbase has doubled and SMG has blown over. I wouldn't release anything right now unless my schedule was already backed up with releases through spring, the marketroid bean counters of this business always starve us through autumn so they can overload the shelves in time for the holidays.
