I gotta buckle down over the weekend so I can excuse this purchase

El Tomboto, Monday, 27 August 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

I am completely stoked by the reports of the control scheme

El Tomboto, Monday, 27 August 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

finally an FPS that I can play

El Tomboto, Monday, 27 August 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

It does seem like this is the kind of game the wii controls were designed for. I think it's going to feel real natural, pretty quick. I've even recharged the batteries in preparation.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 27 August 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

i want!!!

carne asada, Monday, 27 August 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

9.5/10 on IGN! Shame I'm in the UK, and hence have 2months to wait for this... :(

CraigG, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 09:17 (eighteen years ago)

quite bizarre review here

"Too much of the time, though, "Metroid Prime 3" is more tedious than epic. This is particularly true of the boss battles, which are exhaustive affairs requiring dedication, patience, and most importantly, a familiarity with the vocabulary of videogames: double jumping, circle strafing, shooting weak points for massive damage, etc. Those who previously used the Wii only for party games will need a 13 year-old boy to explain it all."

omg boss battles that last longer than 30 seconds? who knows what would happen if he tried to play Shadow Of The Colossus.

zappi, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 01:00 (eighteen years ago)

Haha, there's a dude at my work who called Shadow of the Colossus a "poor man's Zelda". When I quizzed him about it, he said it was just riding about on a horse going nowhere. I asked him why he wasn't thrilled with epic battles against 100ft tall monsters and he said, "oh, I didn't even see any baddies in Colossus".

I guess some people just don't get stuff. He played the game for two hours.

melton mowbray, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

Scanning...

The controls work pretty good. The only small problems I've had are that I have the tendency to relax my right hand, which is holding the remote, which is used to control the camera, and a few times it (the camera) gets stuck kind of crooked and it's a minor annoyance to try to get the camera centered again - and it seems like in tense battles - firing by pressing the A button kind of wore out my wrist a bit.

Speaking of boss battles - I died on the first boss :( about an hour in

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 05:12 (eighteen years ago)

the controls for this really are excellent, even better than i was expecting.
game v. good, but v. linear (i'm only 4 hours in tho)

zappi, Sunday, 2 September 2007 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

this game is fun. i just played it for a few hours. the first metroid game i've been able to get into.

the reviewer who complained that you have to be "familiar with video games" to play it is dumb.

s1ocki, Monday, 3 September 2007 03:36 (eighteen years ago)

It's a pity that this isn't out until October in Europe.
I'm playing the first Metroid Prime (such a great game) while I wait for it to come out.

treefell, Monday, 3 September 2007 08:15 (eighteen years ago)

i cannot wait for this. metroid prime was my fav game of the last generation. how do the controls compare to say, red steel?

r1o natsume, Monday, 3 September 2007 11:02 (eighteen years ago)

WHA!!!! end of october over here.

i have far cry to finish (GOOD RIDDANCE) and then spongebob and trauma thingy second opinion to keep me going for 6 weeks. might just manage it.

Alan, Monday, 3 September 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

haven't played red steel. the controls are really tight, close to keyboard/mouse but slightly slower turning round. there are 3 sensitivity settings. for comparison i just tried playing something with dual analog sticks and it felt a bit cumbersome. dear other wii developers, please pay attention! (i've read that the controls are similar or maybe even better for the next MOH though)

zappi, Monday, 3 September 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

ya turning around was the only thing that felt less than super-smooth to me.

s1ocki, Monday, 3 September 2007 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

I'm definitely convinced by this game that the wii controls can make a fps more fun - pointing to aim really makes sense and feels good. Some of the button presses, maybe not so much (especially having to crook my thumb to hit the A button wears it out - I'd rather that button was longer and I could just rest my thumb on it).

The game has also convinced me that the wii desperately needs an online-multiplayer FPS! Could be so fun

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

I got this but I haven't played it yet! Question: why is shooting done with the thumb and jumping done with the trigger finger?!?!!? uh

El Tomboto, Friday, 7 September 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm... I wonder if you can change that in the options?

The game seems really long. I haven't even gotten off the first planet yet

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 7 September 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

yeh you can swap them round in the options

zappi, Friday, 7 September 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

i was wondering hte same!!

s1ocki, Saturday, 8 September 2007 05:34 (eighteen years ago)

because it's easier to do thumb-presses repeatedly? (guessing)

abanana, Saturday, 8 September 2007 13:05 (eighteen years ago)

RONG guess again

El Tomboto, Saturday, 8 September 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

I'm kind of losing my enthusiasm for this game right now. I'm sort of stuck on the boss fight at (I assumme) the end of the Bryyo section. Failed five or six times already. Each time I'm getting a little closer, but I just don't enjoy long boss fights where you have to shoot a guy a few thousand or more times. I liked the exploration and light puzzle solving - but the boss combat is slowly destroying my will to continue...

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 10 September 2007 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

WHEEEEEE

I'm stuck in the jungle. Hyper mode is scary.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 15 September 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

I'm very much not a fan of games where nearly every significant fight necessitates reading a FAQ or a walkthrough. I'm on the last boss on Bryyo now and while I don't think the difficulty level is too high, I'm certainly tired of having some designer imagine I was ever going to figure out how to beat half of the last three or four major battles on my own with nothing but the lame scanner data. Fuck you.

El Tomboto, Sunday, 16 September 2007 06:10 (eighteen years ago)

otherwise this is completely awesome. I live for the sound effect that accompanies missile/energy pack collection.

El Tomboto, Sunday, 16 September 2007 06:11 (eighteen years ago)

oh and jeff I would definitely take a trip to the options menu and switch the jump and fire buttons, I'd have a very fucked up hand right now if I'd had to get this far using that A button to shoot. AUTOMATIC FIRE WOULD HAVE BEEN A NICE TOUCH GUYS.

El Tomboto, Sunday, 16 September 2007 06:21 (eighteen years ago)

i think i'm near the end now, struggling with annoying fetchquest (i just looked up gamefaqs for 1st time). i actually switched the buttons back round again half way through, as a result i've grown extra muscles in my thumb or something cos my A button firing is superautomatic now.

zappi, Sunday, 16 September 2007 10:59 (eighteen years ago)

also, the cut scenes with Samus' spacecraft have made me want a metroid themed space shooter.

zappi, Sunday, 16 September 2007 11:04 (eighteen years ago)

arggggh annoying fetch quest is annoying

zappi, Monday, 17 September 2007 11:31 (eighteen years ago)

the stupid energy cells take way too much work, espesh

remy bean, Monday, 17 September 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

i quit @ 80% to play lego star wars b/c of what tom mentioned: convoluted hour-long boss battles b/c i can't figure out i need to charge the shot at the ball on some robot's back and then whale on the face in hyper-mode b4 large stomping dude sends out invisible green hands to slap my uncoordinated ass around the inside of a spore-thing for half a fucking hour

remy bean, Monday, 17 September 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

three months pass...

I like this game except for the boss fights. I think I just hate boss fights.

J, Saturday, 5 January 2008 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

Boss fights got boring in the '90s. They need something else.

Autumn Almanac, Saturday, 5 January 2008 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

boss fights are still a blast in zelda titles. but yeah the boss fights in this are why I traded it for beer money

El Tomboto, Sunday, 6 January 2008 03:20 (eighteen years ago)

original metroid got it right - absolute minimum of bosses, maximum exploration

El Tomboto, Sunday, 6 January 2008 03:21 (eighteen years ago)

please to try "shadow of the colossus"

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 6 January 2008 07:06 (eighteen years ago)

Haha forks that's what my roommate said to me as well! And Tom OTM the boss fights in Z:TP were for the most part great--I forgot that.
