So i got this despite the fact that people seem to have fist-shaking anger about how not good it is, and so far i really like it! I'm wondering if the open world thing was just so played up that people can't get past the fact that it is a disappointment (and it kind of is tbh) or if the gameplay really bugs people for some reason that i haven't gleaned.
anyone?

the vehicles are shitty

(apart from the first buggy you get)

also, the game froze up very often. i think that was why i slowly stopped playing tbh

huh, i havent had any freezes yet. are you ps3 or 360? also, i have been digging the weird backwards 4 wheeler thingy i bought quite a bit, and the muscle car isnt bad.
my main complaint is that having a hueg open world and then not putting anything other than hueg trucks that are functionally slow moving crash obstacles out there on the roads is super dumb.

ps3, actually haven't played for a while so they might have patched things up.
the ai traffic is hilarious, i'm a big fan of endless driving into nothing though so i did really like the size of the world. and the sparseness.
lol you've made me want to fire this up now.

oh yeah, and collecting barrels for hours on end was strangely hypnotic.

sunsets are fucking gorgeous in this game, esp if you find one of the vantage points or whatever
xpost: i also am digging the playground pointlessness of a lot of the jumps - most of the time the only reward seems to be seeing one, lining it up, and just doing it. no achievements, no barrels, just that holy shit fuck yeah moment as its own reward. would enjoy more of this in games tbf

lol I didn't see that this was ILG so I was trying to figure out why you were repping for the band

Not sure I came across and fist shaking anger about Fuel, but I don't remember ever hearing anything that got me really excited about it either. For me personally the open world thing was neither here nor there - after all, there are big arrows in the sky telling you exactly where to go, right? I think the problem was it came out right after several games that looked very similar. I'm thinking particularly of Motorstorm 2 and Pure, in terms of arcade racing and mostly brownish, dusty environments, but there were at least a couple of other titles too. The open world Midnight Club LA and Burnout Paradise were both still pretty fresh at the time as well, both of which I played, but only felt so-so about.
So trying to think back, it just felt like it was another game like a lot of other games I'd recently played, none of which I was too crazy about, and at that time, dropping sixty dollars for more of that seemed like an expense I could easily skip.

oh yeah, i was def sold by finding it for $20. I love pure, but i have to admit that i appreciate not having to do stupid skateboardy tricks to win races in this one. if there was a way to just turn pure into a straight racer w/o that crap it might be my favorite offroad racer ever.

but this open world of Fuel's was a leeetle different, it was seriously big. surreal to drive around.

Ok so all of the good will that I have towards this game is getting destroyed by the nightmarishly long load screens from restarting a race wtf?

Especially since one fuckup = you lose most of the time

ok starting to hate this more and more. the better vehicles appear to expose the TOTALLY FUCKED PHYSICS in this game. having one of the top cycles in the game should not equate to getting immobilized by cutting the turn 6 inches to the left of the center of a dirt track on a slight incline over and over and over again.

been playing this today.
it seems all over the place in terms of gameplay and rewards for races, i couldn't follow how it was working and sometimes i'd win lots of races and get nothing but then all of a sudden be rewarded with 3 new zones for one race. also, quite annoying not getting anything whatsoever for second place.
generally the races can become a bit daunting repetetive, with the same abandoned truck and car graphic to dodge in the road, yawn. and with races that go on for what seems like hours, it's really frustrating to have your first place nicked right at the last second, and know you have to repeat that race all over again.
some nice scenery though, but what's also annoying is the sloppy way some of it is put together, with some roads not joining up or ramps not slanting all the way to the ground, and bridge components just randomly in the middle of a road!

"daunting AND repetetive"
