mannnnn i dunno herelike this is a case where you really could buy and learn to use the actual instrument at roughly the same price and devotion of time that the simulacrum takes

Have you tried buying records? That shit is expensive. What are saying works for Guitar Hero though.
― Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 12 October 2009 20:05 (fifteen years ago)
guitar playing... well i think i could probably get really good at GH much quicker, haha. still, etc etc the old canard comparing a puzzle beat-matching video game to actual instrument technique, c'mon people get realz
still too much money for a single game/controller combo tho, maybe once it hits the clearance rack
― Nhex, Monday, 12 October 2009 23:45 (fifteen years ago)
I really want this. I was skeptical until the track list started getting more and more interesting.

Forks - DJ Hero is a lot less sim-like than it looks. From my brief time trying out the game, it seems to present just a different interface to interact with the music and possibly a simpler one than even guitar hero / rock band. I'm not trying to sell you, but if you watch the tutorial video posted above, you can see it's all about just hitting three buttons in time to the music. doing the occasional scratch type movement and pushing the fader left, right, or center. I didn't find it any harder than any other rhythm action game after thirty seconds or so of figuring out how to play it. I did find that the controller pulled me more into the game, like a good controller should. I do agree with Nhex though that these games are damn pricey.
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 14:55 (fifteen years ago)
I'd like to try it, no doubt. I'm just real wary.we spent an hour or two last night culling vinyl for the FMU Fair. Anybody want a lovely copy of pet sounds? or the white label michael jackson megamixes?
― "Keep Tweeting", Raged Roger The Kindly Hippopotamus. (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:16 (fifteen years ago)
Played this a little bit at Best Buy last night. Not the best circumstances, because they didn't even have the music turned up, and the turntable was set up so that I couldn't really see the TV. And it was wobbly. So pretty lackluster, but I think it would be much better if I could actually hear the music.
― Jeff, Sunday, 25 October 2009 16:22 (fifteen years ago)
Can't afford this for at least a few more weeks it looks like, but in a few more weeks there may be other games to get instead...
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 26 October 2009 01:46 (fifteen years ago)
not quite sure i get dj hero... is there no pitchshifting/beat matching element to it? if not, what... is the point really?
― banned, on the run (s1ocki), Monday, 26 October 2009 02:26 (fifteen years ago)
s1ocki, what the fuck do you mean, what's the point? It's a rhythm game! The point is it's hopefully fucking fun and challenging to press buttons and move stuff in time to the music. Were you confused that people played Guitar Hero but still couldn't play guitar after beating the game? Did that make it no fun? Was it absurd that after playing Space Channel 5 people hadn't learned how to dance like Michael Jackson? Was it pointless to play Parapa the Rapper, because you still couldn't rap for shit after acing the game?
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 26 October 2009 14:52 (fifteen years ago)
whoa there pal. im confused that it doesn't seem to involve the part of djing that actually involves, like, matching up rhythms. which i would think would be the fun part of a dj game.
― banned, on the run (s1ocki), Monday, 26 October 2009 15:23 (fifteen years ago)
jeff levine you cursed a lot in your defense of dj hero
― Bobby Wo (max), Monday, 26 October 2009 15:24 (fifteen years ago)
this is a rhythm game that they could have conceivably done something interesting and different with, but it just looks like guitar hero with a different-shaped controller. whatevs, im sure its fun.
― banned, on the run (s1ocki), Monday, 26 October 2009 15:26 (fifteen years ago)
So a game where you start a record, cue up the next record then fade into it on a beat, then que up the next record is what you were looking for? I don't know quite how you would turn that into a game... sounds more like a DJ sim - at the point why wouldn't you just buy two turntables and some records?
I agree it is like Guitar Hero. But with better music! Personally I find the controller a little more natural and comfortable too (when I tried the demo). I've always felt a little uncomfortable using the guitar controller actually. It's a bit silly and definitely over-priced, but scratching, reversing the track and using the fader to switch between songs felt very immersive to me
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 26 October 2009 16:49 (fifteen years ago)
The music is much better. It doesn't matter how many gutair heroes or rock bands come out, I get tired of playing rock music, indie rock, and metal.
― Jeff, Monday, 26 October 2009 16:57 (fifteen years ago)
well jeff (levine) I feel like actual djing is kind of a rhythm game already, so I'm surprised that the game version doesn't really seem to resemble it!
― banned, on the run (s1ocki), Monday, 26 October 2009 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

― Ømår Littel (Jordan), Monday, 26 October 2009 17:12 (fifteen years ago)
right i mean unlike guitar hero this game seems to ignore the most prominent rhythm-based action of using the instrument

i kind of agree... i mean, just based on where my tastes lie... but even though i'd rather listen to daft punk than (whatever indie band), i'm not sure triggering daft punk songs is gonna be as fun as "playing" the various parts of rock songs.

yeah, this kind of game screams "pick me up when it's being clearanced out of best buy!", when it will join the hoarded games i have for systems i never got around to buying. then again i think activision said it's dedicated to at least making a second DJ hero just to recoup the development costs and invest in the franchise, but we'll see how far it goes

― More like Bowel Shitty amirite? (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 27 December 2009 17:32 (fifteen years ago)
Played a bit of this a couple of weeks ago for XBox.
I thought it was pretty cool, and if I had time or motivation to sit down and get good at it, I could see it being muy addicting. NV, you are totally correct that its more complicated than guitar hero in terms of modalities - spin, fade, pitch control, and samples all at the same time - BUT its only got three rhythm lines to keep up with at the same time, whereas guitar hero has four. I've played guitar pretty regularly for over 15 years, and I am HORRIBLE at Guitar Hero. I was actually alright at DJ Hero.
Points to remember about this review: I was sober while playing. I could see this being REALLY REALLY fun with the proper. . . enhancements.

― forksclovetofu, Saturday, 10 April 2010 19:51 (fifteen years ago)
DJ Hero 2 was confirmed a few months ago, they've been lining up the artists for a long time now. It makes sense since they basically decided to invest in the turntable as a new platform, like the GH guitar or RB set, so the sequel was probably in the pipeline before the first one even came out. Sounds like it'll be the same game just with new tracks, so the cost isn't that high for them - the bulk of it was putting out the first game. Then again if their financials are bad enough, they still might just ditch it.
