Best of IGN's Top 51-100 NES games

IGN just ran a Top 100 NES Games list here:

http://www.ign.com/top-100-nes-games/

But rather than doing the Top 50 and getting loads of votes for SMB1, 3 and Zelda (not complaining, those are pretty much top 10 games ever for me, I love 'em) it might be more interesting to look at the other end of the list: #100 through #51. I'm putting them in alphabetical order to try to eliminate some bias for those who haven't seen the list.

Gotta go with Ice Hockey for nostalgia - my best friend and I played it way too much back in the day. Even more that Tecmo Superbowl.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 17 October 2009 02:46 (fifteen years ago)

I played a lot of Ikari Warriors.

Me too. I have heavy nostalgia for it because my dad and I used to play it together back when we got along. And after every level he'd yell "HEMORRHOIDS!, HEMORRHOIDS!" as the two dude warriors did their mad dance to the next stage.

havent played too many of these, it's down to duck hunters, one of the mega mans, or teenage mutant ninja turtles

Thought I was going to vote for Chip N Dale, but then Tecmo Super Bowl popped up at the end of the list.

I Am Curious (The Yellow Kid), Saturday, 17 October 2009 03:47 (fifteen years ago)

Little Nemo: The Dream Master for nostalgia.
Or Goonies 2 for nostalgia.
Or maybe I'll go with Dr. Mario.

LodeRunner was great for the Apple 2. The NES version has to scroll from side to side (not cool).

hatchet, axe and saw supervisor (CaptainLorax), Saturday, 17 October 2009 04:10 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't played many of these, but I love Lolo 3. Definitely the best of the NES Lolos. Put it on Virtual Console already!

abanana, Saturday, 17 October 2009 05:16 (fifteen years ago)

also, where's Startropics 2? almost as good as the original in my opinion.

abanana, Saturday, 17 October 2009 05:30 (fifteen years ago)

I give IGN credit for mentioning Startropics 2 in the review for the first one. Lot's of the games on IGN's top 100 list have worthy enough sequels that weren't mentioned at all: Duck Tales 2, Bubble Bobble part 2, TMNT 3, Rescue Rangers 2, Adventure Island 1 and 3, and R.C. Pro-Am 2. Granted, most people are unaware that Duck Tales even has a sequel. Anyways if you want to post some casual challops of what didn't make the top 100 list there is also this thread

I went with Ikari Warriors for the great co-op action; there wasn't so much of that back in the day.

Euler, Saturday, 17 October 2009 07:25 (fifteen years ago)

have a soft spot for Guardian Legend ("Lounge"? lolz), very ambitious for its time.

zappi, Saturday, 17 October 2009 09:49 (fifteen years ago)

Tecmo World Wrestling, because it was awesome, and who here has played it? But I'd rep for Ikari, DD2, Dr. Mario and Rygar...

Nhex, Saturday, 17 October 2009 09:56 (fifteen years ago)

Guardian Legend has some awesome music and is a really cool hybrid game, but too hard for me..

Nhex, Saturday, 17 October 2009 09:57 (fifteen years ago)

surprised Wizards and Warriors isn't in the top 50.

GM, Sunday, 18 October 2009 04:47 (fifteen years ago)

FUCKKKKKKKK ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT I am voting for Little Nemo

*snip long-winded ponderous explanation which took me like three non-sober hours to not write*

okamadablobisney (jamescobo), Sunday, 18 October 2009 09:33 (fifteen years ago)

lotta possibilities here; but ice hockey is the one I couldn't let go.
Willow, Ikari Warriors, Little Nemo, Rush N Attack, Dragon Warrior III, Ghosts and Goblins all serious contenders

Does the hole come standard or did you have to special order it (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 18 October 2009 14:25 (fifteen years ago)

nes is the most overrated console ~

thomp, Sunday, 18 October 2009 14:26 (fifteen years ago)

gotta be dr mario

Bobby Wo (max), Sunday, 18 October 2009 14:28 (fifteen years ago)

The greatness of many of these games depends heavily on whether or not you had a friend or sibling or hobo to play with.

I never really thought Kung Fu was that much fun, but it deserves bonus points for being the definition of what 1980s moms thought videogames were all about: "oh there goes little jeremy sitting there kicking guys in the head again on the nintendo, bless it"

Out of all these games, I still play Dr. Mario the most, but that's because I have it on WiiWare so I can let people 8-year-olds from across the world stomp my ass.

At the time, I probably played flickin' COBRA TRIANGLE the most, so I'm going to rep for it.

at least one vote for Maniac Mansion. that game was advanced!

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 20 October 2009 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

tecmo super bowl. I remember when that game came out it was impossible to find anywhere. we're talking tickle me elmo territory here. and so I was in babbages one day and was talking to the clerk about some other game, maybe baseball simulator 1.000 and I just casually mentioned how "...but everybody's looking for that tecmo 2 game" and she grabbed a game from behind a counter and I practically leapt at my dad's throat "OH MY GOD THEY HAVE TECMO SUPER BOWL!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BUY THIS GAME FOR ME, PAPA SNRUB!!" and I went on and on and on about how it was impossible to find and how Cousin Snrub had rented it from imperial video and flatly refused to send it back incurring like a hundred dollars of late fees. and of course my dad, kind soul that he was bought it for me totally spur of the moment. which back then was a HUGE thing. so of course that night my eight year old self must've played it until one a.m. good times, man. good times.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 01:14 (fifteen years ago)

runner-up vote: wizards and warriors. played that game like in my day. trying in vain to find some practical use for the boots of lava walk, the horn, and the cloak of darkness. the music inside the trees sounds a lot like vitalic's "poney"

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 01:17 (fifteen years ago)

if that the adventures of lolo game i think it is its a lot of fun

still voted for maniac mansion because of it being a really good game and also tentacles and also being hard but not because of jumps and also the music. 2nd vote which doesnt count for little nemo (the dream master) because it has such a horrible/amazing ending and u get to drape yourself in the skins of dead animals

h3len k. (Lamp), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 03:39 (fifteen years ago)

Lolo's great! Better yet, as far as NES puzzle games go, is "Fire 'n' Ice" which I discovered in ROM form a few years ago.

I went with "A Boy and His Blob" out of love. It's in no way the best but it is dearest to my heart, and with this kind of thing I gotta vote from the heart.

existential eggs (Abbott), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 04:37 (fifteen years ago)

You just descend further and further in a deep, black abyss and then, after hours of perfectly timed jumps and dodges, you finally soar through outer space, only to get killed by barely touching the first fucking bouncy marshmallow on Blobonia. I don't think I've ever like a game so mean to its players since.

existential eggs (Abbott), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 04:39 (fifteen years ago)

Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team

this was the game I most wanted to play, so I'll vote for it

I guess it was somewhat predictable.

Nhex, Thursday, 22 October 2009 04:07 (fifteen years ago)

I voted Blob, and strongly considered all the games that got more votes.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 22 October 2009 05:56 (fifteen years ago)

My second in line was Duck Hunt.

existential eggs (Abbott), Thursday, 22 October 2009 06:03 (fifteen years ago)

man, wizards & warriors was so hard. i remember the cool music though.
