half of them from 08-09. pretty weird.

i want to say Vagrant Story but i don't think i ever finished that.

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 11:44 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, there's definitely something changing in the air there... I like Brawl but it definitely shouldn't be a "perfect score" game. Bayonetta seems really suspect.

Nhex, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 11:51 (sixteen years ago)

Half the Edge list comes from 07-08 too.

JimD, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 11:52 (sixteen years ago)

the received wisdom on the glut of 40s recently is that they're trying to prop up an industry in crisis

my take is tht you're more likely to be appreciative (and forgiving) and nurturing of games when their industry is in peril (not that they are in peril per se, but games aren't doing as well as they used to in japan)

OoT btw

Worth noting that Famitsu launched in 1986, so for 12 years they gave nothing 40. Anyway:

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Played this when it was fresh and new (even bought the special golden cart), but never quite fell in love with it, and gave up at the water temple. May go back to it one day. Will probably end up having to vote for it...

Soulcalibur - Nice fun loose b'mup, but a 40? C'mon.

Vagrant Story - Never played, but if you put these 12 games in front of me now and said "play one", this is probably the one I'd pick up.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - Never played, disillusioned after OoT.

Nintendogs - Played about 10 minutes a day for about a week then realised how CRUSHINGLY POINTLESS AND STUPID it was. Amazed it made this list, am going to have to find a translation of the review and figure out how it happened.

Final Fantasy XII - Only FF I've ever played was 2, although am tempted to try XIII. Didn't realise XII was meant to be anything special though.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Nasty unfun loose b'mup.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - Never played.

428: Fūsasareta Shibuya de - Never even heard of.

Dragon Quest IX - Never played.

Monster Hunter Tri - Never played.

Bayonetta - Want.

soulcaliber i guess?

h3len k. (Lamp), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:30 (sixteen years ago)

Soul Calibur is a legit 40 definitely - at the time it was revelatory, there was nothing that looked close to as good, and it played amazingly well too (and still does!). SC > SC2 > Soul Edge > SC3 > SC4, unfortunately

Why are games dong badly in Japan when they'll expanding everywhere else?

Gravel Puzzleworth, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:35 (sixteen years ago)

handheld and esp cell phone games are doing really well there - market is much better than na/europe its mostly just the home console market thats slow ~ ps3 is expensive and kind of unappealing i think ms has v little market presence economy is still really slow maybe potential sea change in how ppl (esp kids) consume games

h3len k. (Lamp), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:39 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I wanna go out on a limb and say that ppl who wouldn't see Soul Calibur as a 40/40 game are either not into 3D fighters or Virtua Fighter partisans.

the blackest thing ever seen (HI DERE), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:40 (sixteen years ago)

^^^ yeah it and zelda are the only "legit" 40s on this list imo

also xp wanted to say that gaming had penetrated further into the culture there already - wasnt really space/market share for the casual gaming revolution

h3len k. (Lamp), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:49 (sixteen years ago)

nintendogs is the only "legit" 40 on this list imo

SC > SC2 > Soul Edge > SC3 > SC4

It seems to be the general consensus that SC was the best in the series, although I haven't played it. (I have Soul Edge and SC2.) What's worse about the more recent ones?

abanana, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 20:13 (sixteen years ago)

I've only played SC2 and SC4, but they were both really fun.

Famitsu-voting-me is going to hate the Edge-voting-me, as I'm going for Wind Waker over Ocarina of Time on this one.

ppl who wouldn't see Soul Calibur as a 40/40 game are either not into 3D fighters...

Well yeah, that's probably me. I like Tekken!

What's worse about the more recent ones?

I've actually barely played 3! Just a few hours at a friend's house. But I spent something like 80 hours on SC4 and it's hand to describe but the... fluidity had gone? Like, when you first play Tekken, you're basically throwing single punches, but when you watch good people, they're comboing into all sorts of shit; SC was always charmingly the opposite - so that at high level (basically, when people could Guard Impact) it was all low-short block block counter etc, but when you just spammed the buttons you did really cool shit that you could then never repeat?

Like, it's still a good fighting game? I just can't imagine playing it with non-gamers, whereas SC I could and often did.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Thursday, 22 October 2009 16:44 (sixteen years ago)

those were super interesting mysteries

bro no joke but i will rep for some of the HER interactive games from the "available on cd-rom" era 'till the end of time~~~ junior detectives 4ALLTYME

soul caliber 4 is less well designed then sc1/2 esp the comboset but it had some sik features and net play but all ne1 plays now is smash bros or 2D fighters so it doesnt matter anyway

m.coleman (Lamp), Thursday, 22 October 2009 20:43 (sixteen years ago)

i will rep for ffXii

Does the hole come standard or did you have to special order it (forksclovetofu), Friday, 23 October 2009 05:17 (sixteen years ago)

Hold on, are you telling me that SC is a 40/40 game because non-experts can still win by mashing?

JimD, Friday, 23 October 2009 07:06 (sixteen years ago)

Not win necessarily, but have fun! Like, I get that you are an SF4 guy, I like Nethack too! But this is a game that was fun Noob vs Noob, fun Noob vs Expert, fun Expert vs Noob AND fun Expert vs Expert - most other games are at most 2 of those.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Friday, 23 October 2009 19:39 (sixteen years ago)

Although, that gives me a thread idea!

Gravel Puzzleworth, Friday, 23 October 2009 19:40 (sixteen years ago)

Soul Calibur was a perfect combination of character design and gameplay balance. It worked on several levels; it has a super-flashy easy mode that is really fun to watch, but it also has a pretty deep fighting system that can pretty easily counter all of the flashy stuff and rewards skill, meaning you have to knock your opponent into a state where he/she is vulnerable to your flashier moves. It was also just tons and tons and tons of fun.

The later ones added some interesting characters and got pretty insane storywise, which could be either good or bad, but none of them really captured the magic of the intial Soul Calibur, which really was an unequivocal all-around improvement on Soul Edge.

the blackest thing ever seen (HI DERE), Friday, 23 October 2009 20:03 (sixteen years ago)

I haven't really played the later SCs, but definitely agree this was true about SC1 and 2 to a slightly lesser extent. SC also had this "we are in the new generation!" feeling since it debuted w/the Dreamcast.

Nhex, Saturday, 24 October 2009 00:02 (sixteen years ago)

h8 soul calibur

thomp, Sunday, 25 October 2009 12:48 (sixteen years ago)

vagrant story is maybe the last rpg i wholeheartedly enjoyed. it's pretty near perfect in a fairly formal within-its-genre way i reckon

I'm not super far into it yet, but it's a hard game to knock (except for maybe relying too much on the past games and not being original enough)

The new Pokemon Ranger out in the US? Or an actual Pokemon out in Japan? Would be pretty amazed if they offered 100% rating to yet another 'draw circles around Pokemon' sequel.
