Not much point in putting HL2 in there if Orange Box is also on the poll...

Nhex, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 11:50 (fifteen years ago)

That's how Edge scored them though.

JimD, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 11:51 (fifteen years ago)

But logically it doesn't make sense to vote for HL2 vs. Orange Box, since it's included inside - thus Orange Box is at least as good as HL2 (unless you want to argue that adding Ep 1, 2, Portal and TF2 brought it down, but why would anyone think that?).

Nhex, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 11:54 (fifteen years ago)

Well, maybe it'll just mean HL2 gets no votes then. But I dunno, I think they're actually worthy of different scores when looked at in context. HL2 in 2004 is much more graphically impressive than HL2 in 2007.

JimD, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 12:03 (fifteen years ago)

mario 64 ahead of the other mario on the list.

ever dream some dude? (darraghmac), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 12:04 (fifteen years ago)

Voted SM64 because it's the only one I still get misty eyed about, and also because it felt like such a massive leap forward. I think that was the issue of Edge with the Miyamoto interview where he explained that he was putting on weight because he was working with Americans and couldn't smoke as much.

a gift from your mind in the form of the perfect beat (snoball), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 12:08 (fifteen years ago)

having mario 64 in my pocket makes the ds worthwhile if they never released another game for it.

ever dream some dude? (darraghmac), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 12:09 (fifteen years ago)

can't decide, won't decide between ocarina and galaxy

coz (webinar), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 13:09 (fifteen years ago)

what if an inferior game beats them both by ONE VOTE?

ever dream some dude? (darraghmac), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 13:11 (fifteen years ago)

I'm fine w/mario 64 beating them if it means I don't have to choose between them

coz (webinar), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 13:12 (fifteen years ago)

tempted to go gtaiv. although it's obviously not worth 10. so that would be stupid.

surfing on hokusine waves (ledge), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 13:15 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I'm not buying this and the Famitsu list both essentially saying that we have had so many all-time classics in the last two years... especially franchise iterations like Halo 3 and Monster Hunter Tri.

Nhex, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 13:21 (fifteen years ago)

gta iv my ass

banned, on the run (s1ocki), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 13:35 (fifteen years ago)

orange box has hl2 and portal. makes it pretty much a no-brainer in my book.

ur pretty much a no-brainer in my book

coz (webinar), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 13:47 (fifteen years ago)

if it wasn't obvious already i'm completely w/slocki on this one

Nhex, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 14:56 (fifteen years ago)

I have never played mario 64 before =(

mayor jingleberries, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 16:04 (fifteen years ago)

I think u can play N64 games pretty well via emulator these days; might be worth looking into?

coz (webinar), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

Super Mario 64 - no real wish to ever play this again
Gran Turismo - never played
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - never played, probably should? Is it fun?
Halo: Combat Evolved - don't like shooters
Half-Life 2 - don't like shooters
Halo 3 - don't like shooters. How was this a 10?
The Orange Box - Portal was good until I got stuck
Super Mario Galaxy - Will probably vote for this even though it's not as good as Sunshine
Grand Theft Auto IV - http://www.hitselfdestruct.com/2009/03/fall.html
LittleBigPlanet - will anyone defend this now?

Gravel Puzzleworth, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

Super Mario 64 - Pretty overrated, but way better than SM Sunshine, which I straight up didn't like.
Gran Turismo - Never played the original, but 3 seemed pretty amazing at the time.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - never played, probably should
Halo: Combat Evolved - don't like shooters
Half-Life 2 - watched my housemate play through all three parts, willingly. Totally cool.
Halo 3 - don't like shooters
The Orange Box - Portal + watching HL2 was totally worth a 10.
Super Mario Galaxy - Never played, would probably like it.
Grand Theft Auto IV - Not a 10, but fun, especially with the great DLC.
LittleBigPlanet - Thought it was a cool toy and not a good game from day one.

Super Mario 64 - did not blow my mind the way it seemed to blow everyone elses at the time, lost interest, didn't finish
Gran Turismo - don't like racing sims
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - never played, probably should (which is looking like a theme here)
Halo: Combat Evolved - hard to look at without hindsight blinders, but was pretty much a revolution when it came to shooter multiplayer, every dude i knew used to play this, spent about a year going to my friend daves and playing like system linked 16 player matches w/multiple tvs which unfortunately led to me getting thoroughly pwned because i could never get the hang of the halo feel (and i like shooters.) earned its ten though imo.
Half-Life 2 - really a great game, something to be said for people still being excited about it years after its release
Halo 3 - more of the same, own it, never play it.
The Orange Box - Portal is great, team fortress ehh whatever, $$$ value makes this a 10 for sure tho.
Super Mario Galaxy - enjoyed it a ton until i hit my usual "why do i have to do this waggle bullshit" wii threshhold and quit, really need to go back and finish it one of these days.
Grand Theft Auto IV - didn't get far into it, enjoyed what i got through, not as much of a reinvention as people claimed it was.
LittleBigPlanet - minimal exposure, got to the first part where my friend started to explain how i had to put a virtual sticker somewhere to solve a puzzle and knew i was going to hate the shit out of it, so never tried again. idea on base level is cool tho.

Don Quishote (jjjusten), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

hard to look at without hindsight blinders, but was pretty much a revolution when it came to shooter multiplayer

Was this game basically LAN quake for people who never got to play it? That and Little Big Planet seem like the most "this idea was amazing when it first happened on PC" picks.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

I will say that I enjoyed watching my pal play Halo 3. I really liked that so much of the "cutscenes" in Halo's story mode were rendered in-game, which is always a big plus for me, and one of the things I love about HL2.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

i think there were some significant playstyle differences w/halo, but its years ago and i cant quite put all the who did what first together. still, i find it hard to argue against the fact that it was revolutionary if only because it took LAN pc gaming to a way less hardcore audience, and in doing so exploded the population of PvP shooter fans to the point where there were times when that seemed like the only thing that gaming was intended to do.

Don Quishote (jjjusten), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

also put more consoles in non-standard "gamer" houses than prob any other game (pre-wii edition)

Don Quishote (jjjusten), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

voted Halo. co-oped that game so many times.

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 18:21 (fifteen years ago)

genuinely terrible list. half life 2

h3len k. (Lamp), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

Super Mario Sunshine and Galaxy are a step back from Mario 64 imo.
They should make a Mario 64 part 2 on the wii. And maybe throw in more turtle shell surfing and raccoon/frog/boot suits. I don't really care for metal mario suit (all slow and shit). Maybe a fast hedgehog suit. And more turtle shell surfing.

hatchet, axe and saw supervisor (CaptainLorax), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

eh? Galaxy was pretty much Mario 64 part 2. in space. with bee suits!

zappi, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

LOL @ Lamp

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 20:42 (fifteen years ago)

xp maybe it was. I just don't remember the platforming aspect being so great. Not as many wall jumps and err it was just lacking in lots of platforming things. I blame it on how small most of those planets were. The game felt limited to me because of the emphasis on planets as opposed to huge wide open terrains.. There was a lack of huge indoor areas as well. Maybe the game was just too short. Space is cool and all but it is kind of dark most of the time.

hatchet, axe and saw supervisor (CaptainLorax), Thursday, 22 October 2009 00:58 (fifteen years ago)

you want wall jumps when you can slingshot round planets? i guess we want different things in our platforming then.

zappi, Thursday, 22 October 2009 12:33 (fifteen years ago)

(it was FAR too easy tho)

zappi, Thursday, 22 October 2009 12:34 (fifteen years ago)

JimD, Monday, 24 October 2011 11:33 (thirteen years ago)

Their review basically says that the 1-to-1 sword mechanic actually works and that's enough to make it fantastic.

JimD, Monday, 24 October 2011 11:34 (thirteen years ago)

where is the review?

Summer Slam! (Ste), Monday, 24 October 2011 12:56 (thirteen years ago)

man wish I voted in this, tough between sm64 and oot

dayo, Monday, 24 October 2011 13:12 (thirteen years ago)

Er the review is in the magazine, though I guess they might put it up on the site once the magazine actually comes out tomorrow.

JimD, Monday, 24 October 2011 21:22 (thirteen years ago)

one year passes...

For the 20th anniversary issue they've gone back and retrospectively given 10/10 to seven games that didn't get perfect ratings first time round:

Goldeneye 007
Advance Wars
Resident Evil 4
Drop 7
Red Dead Redemption
Super Street Fighter IV
Dark Souls

JimD, Saturday, 31 August 2013 13:15 (twelve years ago)

Actually The Last Of Us and Rock Band 3 never got mentions in this thread either.

JimD, Saturday, 31 August 2013 13:16 (twelve years ago)

Drop 7? Pff. Trainyard or gtfo.
