Looking at another Rock Band week with one decent song and a lot of crappola, I started thinking again about my RB/GH wish list (Beatles RB is awesome but it never would have occurred to me to wish for a whole Beatles game)

Fleetwood Mac: Rock Band
Prince: Rock Band (or Rock Man)
Isley Brothers 3x3 full album
Funkadelic track pack
Drive-By Truckers track pack

what else?

antexit, Thursday, 31 December 2009 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

Fleetwood Mac: Rock Band

Would buy.

Mordy, Thursday, 31 December 2009 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

instead, they go with Green Day: Rock Band

abanana, Thursday, 31 December 2009 15:57 (fifteen years ago)

I was thinking about the Green Day thing the other night and figured that since the RB store can get track packs out so easily, why bother making anything but new Whole Band RBs? I mean I guess they can add features to the basic software but how much innovation does it really need at this point?

Euler, Thursday, 31 December 2009 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

I imagine the notation itself takes a good amount of time and expertise, especially when it's something other than Green Day

antexit, Thursday, 31 December 2009 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

Me and my little sister got Beatles rockband for christmas. I'm going to have to look into the downloadble tracks seeing how lots of great songs are missing. I wonder if the downloadable tracks get their own music video like all the other songs

I vote for Beach Boys rockband, and I vot for ILXors to come up with the tracklisting

Steely Dan: Rock Band

/no cobo (jamescobo), Thursday, 31 December 2009 17:09 (fifteen years ago)

they've had some pretty sucky stones songs in rock band/ gh so far... gimme shelter, where you have to sing the gospel lady's part, paint it black, and can't you hear me knocking, imo the worst song they ever recorded

beach boys rock band wouldn't really have much for anyone to do besides the vocalists and the drummer, no? and the theremin player

antexit, Thursday, 31 December 2009 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

rock band: nuggets

honestly i think they're doing just fine putting in 80 or so songs with many different bands, and i wonder if most people even bother with DLC (though personally I love that it's there). But yeah, whatever they do w/RB3 it's gonna have to be a major improvement or change gameplay-wise

Nhex, Thursday, 31 December 2009 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

At the very least it's the novelty. Also it's fun to be able to avoid the 30-40% shitty songs that come boxed with the games. I imagine it's fun to play through a whole album, which I've never actually done-- even though I bought the whole Screaming For Vengeange LP. God knows how much DLC I have invested in the 360 I'm giving away. At least $125.

antexit, Thursday, 31 December 2009 19:46 (fifteen years ago)

I can't even begin to tell you how fun it was to play through Abbey Road from start to finish. I sang the medley! Wheeee

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Thursday, 31 December 2009 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

I love the fact that The End on that album would feel like a boss

Jandek Rock Band

GM, Monday, 4 January 2010 06:04 (fifteen years ago)

spent time making a song in Rock Band Network and god damn is it frustrating. time consuming too.

GM, Monday, 4 January 2010 06:05 (fifteen years ago)

Stooges: Rock Band

just make it the first three studio albums, nothing fancy like the Aerosmith deal. The Weirdness can be DLC.

Euler, Wednesday, 6 January 2010 07:20 (fifteen years ago)

I'd happily play The Idiot and Lust for Life as well.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 07:33 (fifteen years ago)

yes! Make it Iggy and the Stooges. Surely "Search and Destroy" must be on one of these games at this point? Oh, I see it was on Guitar Hero II. But it didn't make Guitar Hero Smash Hits, alas.

Euler, Wednesday, 6 January 2010 08:37 (fifteen years ago)

Rock Band: Bardo Pond, duh!

Rock Band: Terrastock!

Boss level is where you're Kawabata

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 6 January 2010 08:40 (fifteen years ago)

Rock band: Krautrock

my opinionation (Hamildan), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

In addition to Iggy and the Stooges, maybe it can include other Detroit artists, like the MC5, Motown, etc. That would be really cool.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

having spent some time last weekend at a friend's playing gh5 which includes 21st century schizoid man, I'd say a king crimson rock band game is definitely something I'd play

I regret choosing this bland user name (peter in montreal), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

Imagine how incredible that would be. Depending on the line-up you'd get to play as one of 463 band members.

I want Yes Rockband, complete with six keyboards and a cape.

Reverse Cowgirl (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 7 January 2010 10:13 (fifteen years ago)

And a three-foot-high mic stand, obviously.

Reverse Cowgirl (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 7 January 2010 10:14 (fifteen years ago)

Rock Band: The Fall

You can be one of 64 band members however the game will lock you out on random occasions.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 7 January 2010 10:53 (fifteen years ago)

one month passes...

This Year's Model would really fun to play in its entirety.

begs the question, when is enough enough (Euler), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 13:24 (fifteen years ago)

The Otis Redding pack is kinda underwhelming. Why those songs?

Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 17:45 (fifteen years ago)

krautrock band would be awesome

nitzer Ed (s1ocki), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 18:52 (fifteen years ago)

xxp would prefer My Aim Is True but still a good choice

Nhex, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

srsly tho, how did Green Day end up in a position to pimp themselves out like this

I mean, I don't harbor any will towards them or anything but they've always come across as a 2nd-tier fun band that no one really paid attention to, so it's kind of bizarre to realize no actually they are fucking massive and competing with Nickelback as the most successful rock act to debut within the last 20 years.

we call him black Nev coz he's black & his names Neville (HI DERE), Thursday, 11 March 2010 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

this is a question that haunts me as well - although at least part of the answer would be that when it comes to career ambition its pretty clear that they are kinda whores

First and Last and Safeways ™ (jjjusten), Thursday, 11 March 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

I mean they now have a BROADWAY SHOW

it's like, good for them, but WHY

we call him black Nev coz he's black & his names Neville (HI DERE), Thursday, 11 March 2010 17:12 (fifteen years ago)

People get sick of regular musicals and occasionally want "rock"-branded musicals as a palate cleanser. Green Day is a rock band/brand with some art cred and a large fan base.

The musical exists at all because the Berkeley Rep struggles for attendance sometimes, and a Green Day musical is attracts non-theater fans, Berkeley-for-Berkeley's-sake fans, etc., etc. I guess it was pretty good so it went Broadway. Not too complicated, but I can see how it might seem weird.

I mean, there was a Grey Gardens musical. Anything is possible.

-is

Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Thursday, 11 March 2010 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

i think the berkeley rep should have a beserkely-themed musical

antexit, Thursday, 11 March 2010 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

Also, Green Day made a rock opera, which is a format that translates well to the stage.

Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Thursday, 11 March 2010 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

you realize that the question here isn't "why a rock opera" or "why American Idiot" but "why Green Day specifically", right, iow how did it come to be that this particular band which, on first glance, seems like it should completely forgettable/ignorable, blow the fuck up and become one of the cornerstone rock acts of the past two decades

like, imagine instead if we were talking about Rock Band: K's Choice; how the hell would that career path have worked to bring us to that point and isn't it kind of mind-boggling that it worked for Green Day? That is what is being discussed here, not "how did someone get the idea to do an American Idiot stage show" because the answer to that is pretty obvious once you stop boggling about the baseline condition that puts Green Day in a position to be taken seriously as an act whose music you could base a show aroung

we call him black Nev coz he's black & his names Neville (HI DERE), Thursday, 11 March 2010 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

Green Day write catchy pop punk songs that lots of people enjoy and have done this for the last ~15 years. It's no more baffling than the popularity of U2 or Red Hot Chili Peppers.

peter in montreal, Thursday, 11 March 2010 17:45 (fifteen years ago)

It probably has a lot to do with 'how can we get a band with a big catalog that is very popular amongst the core gaming demographic' than anything else.

mayor jingleberries, Thursday, 11 March 2010 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

I'd argue pretty strongly that there is a force of personality behind both Bono and Anthony Kiedis that Billy Joe Armstrong doesn't have; also both U2 and RHCP were doing stuff very different from what other acts on the radio with them were doing, or at least stuff that was instantly identifiable as THEM. I'm not sure you could say the same about Green Day (one of the issues I had with "Basket Case" was that I felt like it abandoned everything I thought was interesting about the band in favor of faceless energy).

Also gonna restate that I ultimately have nothing against Green Day and like most of what I've heard by them; it just seems odd that out of all the bands that came out when they showed up that they're the ones not only still around, but thriving. Obviously a lot of people like them but they never particularly seemed like a band built on longevity.

we call him black Nev coz he's black & his names Neville (HI DERE), Thursday, 11 March 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

I guess the main reason why Green Day and not K's Choice is that K's Choice were never popular? I mean, the larger question of why one band gets famous instead of another is unanswerable. Why Modest Mouse instead of Built to Spill? Why Nirvana instead of Fugazi? Why Brothers Johnson and not Shuggie Otis? Why Bob Marley but not Alton Ellis?

Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Thursday, 11 March 2010 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

Anyway, video games.

Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Thursday, 11 March 2010 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

Fugazi's Nike beef doesn't bode well for an Ian MacKaye Pro-Scowler game coming out soon.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 11 March 2010 18:11 (fifteen years ago)

rock band: lady gaga

cozen, Thursday, 11 March 2010 19:49 (fifteen years ago)

would still pay $$$ for Rock Band: The Smiths

Bill E, Thursday, 11 March 2010 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

I don't get the Green Day thing either. As someone said, there's a vacuum to be filled among "rock w/ longevity" and Green Day right now fits the bill, the way Aerosmith did until a few years ago (notice they got the GH treatment too). But why Green Day is filling that vacuum in 2010 is mind-boggling.

Would there have been Rock Band: Grand Funk Railroad, had there been Rock Band in 1975? A counterfactual ~worth pondering~

Neighbour came round last night and mistook my Rock Band 'axe' for a bona fide Fender Strat - I don't know who was embarrassed more - me or him.

Also, how about Rock Band: Bowie?

Bill E, Thursday, 11 March 2010 21:53 (fifteen years ago)

I'll take an RB: Mick Ronson.
