The last one I played to completion was IX; started X, but it wasn't fun to play (pretty to look at though). I'm skipping this one I think.
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 11 February 2010 15:36 (fifteen years ago)
IX was my last too except i never beat the final boss in that one. interested in this but probably won't pick up on release

you know this is coming out on 360, right?
― forksclovetofu, Thursday, 11 February 2010 15:47 (fifteen years ago)
Play Magazine's review of the Japanese release gave the game a score of 79%. They praised the quality and design of the graphics, the game's characters, and the fun battle gameplay, while the reviewer criticised the "contrived, linear" nature of the environment, noting "while greatly detailed, feels flat and lifeless [...] little more than wallpaper thrown over a tunnel that players walk through".
― forksclovetofu, Thursday, 11 February 2010 15:49 (fifteen years ago)
love that line.

he HATED IT :( :( :(

Also don't own a 360.
Why he hate?
― 80085 (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 11 February 2010 15:54 (fifteen years ago)
he said it was boring, repetitive, a chore... i don't think you really do much besides push your characters in a predetermined direction and let the computer make all the combat decisions for u.
― snoocki (s1ocki), Thursday, 11 February 2010 15:59 (fifteen years ago)
might try and start playing XII the week this comes out

love how Sega in their infinite wisdom decided to release Yakuza 3 (my prohibitive GotY 2k10) on the same day as FF13. I kinda want to buy it in a brick-and-mortar store in the hopes of being treated to a magnificent nerd tirade when I reveal how much of a non-shit I give about any FF game (other than 6).

― Mordy, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 14:14 (fifteen years ago)
what i keep reading is that the first 20-25 hours is one long, tedious tutorial, and then they give you another 20 hours to actually play the game a s a reward if you make it that far. mordy, pls play non-stop for a couple of days and confirm/deny these rumors so i know if i should get it at the weekend.
― aarrissi-a-roni, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 14:22 (fifteen years ago)
that's the plan! winter break starts after class today.
― Mordy, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 14:26 (fifteen years ago)
reviews seem to say that the battle system is good, but it takes forever to get there via the numerous tutorials. i kinda get where they are going with the stripped down linearity though - FFX was a very linear game with loads of waffle between the big battles (blitzball ugh), streamlining that into more of a tactical boss rush thing might be a good idea, all depends how good the battle system is really. (now i think about it FFIV is extremely linear too.)
― aztec gamera (zappi), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 15:06 (fifteen years ago)
Aren't they all pretty linear up to a particular point when a bunch of sidequests open up?
― Mordy, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 15:07 (fifteen years ago)
complaining about linearity in a Final Fantasy game seems akin to complaining about platform jumping in a platform game

who decided linearity = bad? this is another trope in every review: "blahblahblah...but of course, being a FF game, it is very linear". yeah? no shit. it's not like there is a shortage of open world rpgs nowadays if you absolutely can;t do without.
― aarrissi-a-roni, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

the "WOW" (no, not that WOW) factor on this seems fairly high; I imagine it's killer eye and ear candy and that's pretty much the core of why i like the series.
― forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 15:29 (fifteen years ago)
depth of play is always a boon too; no one seems to be saying whether there's a lot of subquests deeper in the game but I imagine that's a symptom of reviewers rushing copy out on time...

― forksclovetofu, Friday, 19 March 2010 14:38 (fifteen years ago)
u kno what? i am playing this and even though every character in it is utterly unbearable i am having a great time. it's just an endless series of beautifully drawn and managed battles punctuated by flipping over to soup up your characters from time to time, loosely strung together by a story that is as compelling and necessary as the mortal kombat backstory. that's probably not the most compelling description in the world, but what can i say, it is really working for me.
― aarrissi-a-roni, Friday, 26 March 2010 17:46 (fifteen years ago)
i'm kind of enjoying this and i'm not sure why. i like szah and lightning (although i'm sure the storyline for her is going swiftly down the road marked "emo" soon enough.) the rest of the characters are awful though - thankfully all the cut scenes are skippable. how soon before you can pick who is in your party? i'm about 10 hours in.

Ok I have seen the PC release of FFXIII with Durante's GeDoSaTo graphics unlock and it is jaw-droppingly glorious! The game is also really a whole lot of fun, which I never expected from all the 'it's one long hallway' criticism. Tbh it doesn't feel all that less linear than FFX.

hmmmm.... so I beat this tonight. Really loses it's steam in those last chapters, just throwing waves of enemies that you have already been killing for hours at you, just not even bothering constructing a believable environment, let's just put the player on literal floating platforms. At one point I was running down a platform towards a boss and it was a bright red platform and it just felt like literally "rolling out the red carpet" for the end game boss fight. Which was a snooze. Don't get me wrong, the design of the bosses was cool and batshit enough, but I had a harder time fighting some non-boss enemies earlier. And yeah the story made no sense at all. If someone were to ask me to explain the plot of this to them, and had never heard of the game before, it would be an impossible task.
I enjoyed the game overall and the combat was the best part, but the leveling system was a total disaster imo. The Crystarium is a huge waste of time. Sure it looks nice and sounds cool but there is no reason at all for it - in fact, it is counter-productive! By not automating levels the game actually lets you mess yourself up. You will be leveling up and after several levels come to an offshoot and think "Oh neat, the game is presenting me with a choice, the first ever justification for me actually holding down these buttons to do this rather than letting the game handle it" and maybe you will skip it for that reason alone. BAD IDEA. Eventually you get towards end of game and your chosen roles are all LVL 4 (actually Crystarium Stage 9, which is just wtfgah....so confusing) and since you are trying to max out and yet can't go anywhere (cos the final level opens up AFTER YOU BEAT THE GAME (how brilliant is that)) you see some unaccessed levels wayyyyyy back in the distance there..... wayyyy somewhere below. You can't just hit the down arrow to go down to the previous level, you have to wind your way around these things that spiral in clockwise and counter-clockwise and go in whatever way they want to without any sense at all.
Really they should have just thrown out leveling or had it automated.
― ©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 6 November 2014 05:02 (eleven years ago)
The backstory/world kind of makes sense ... until the ending, which is a total deus ex machina. The character motivations make no sense.
Regarding leveling. I hated Vanille, and I decided to ruin her by putting her XP into the most expensive jobs. Then after beating the game, I looked at FAQs and it turns out she was the one character required to do the optional late-game quests. Whoops. There really is only one correct way to level the characters; any divergence from it is a mistake.
― abanana, Thursday, 6 November 2014 15:55 (eleven years ago)
You talking about the Death attack? Yeah it seems a lot of those late-game quests involve spamming Death until it works, and it's pretty random whether it will work or not. I used it to take down an Adamantoise once and it took me an hour of trying, dying, retrying, etc. The trick is to use her summon to knock it down and have your party members sabotage its attacks while Vanille spams death. You may get to cast it a dozen times before it gets up and one-hit kills everyone, but it's worth it for the Growth Egg (which gives you 2x CP).
