I just answered the one I grew up w/,Nintendo.

Dark Notion (Abbott), Friday, 19 February 2010 04:26 (fifteen years ago)

me too

^^potentially not true at all, sry^^ (Z S), Friday, 19 February 2010 04:28 (fifteen years ago)

I never liked the "SEGA!!!" commercials, either. When those were playing on tv I was engulfed in the middle of epic RPGs and the very worst advertisement for the other console was something suggesting fleeting intense thrills. A more effective advertisement for me would be "Seeeeeggaaaaaaa....you'll neeeeeeveeeer cooooome baaaack". My mom never would have purchased a second system for me anyway (damn right, too) so I guess it's a moot point.

^^potentially not true at all, sry^^ (Z S), Friday, 19 February 2010 04:31 (fifteen years ago)

was mad jealous that genesis got mortal kombat WITH BLOOD whereas SNES MK just had these greyish sprays of gooey sweat

dyao, Friday, 19 February 2010 04:35 (fifteen years ago)

that's another good poll: would you EVER even CONSIDER buying a SECOND SYSTEM for your children? xp

dyao, Friday, 19 February 2010 04:36 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, that's true. I remember months of checking all the magazines at Wal-Mart for cheat codes to allow blood on SNES, disappointed every time.

^^potentially not true at all, sry^^ (Z S), Friday, 19 February 2010 04:36 (fifteen years ago)

sheeeeeeit, i wouldn't allow my child to grow up in the tyranny of a single system house anymore than I would allow them to torture kittens. That shit ain't right!

a passing heavy daftie (cozen), Friday, 19 February 2010 07:49 (fifteen years ago)

tough call, old sega better than nintendo in my eyes. minus points for making me purchase the 32X joke.

nintendo wins just for the great little thing called a DS

but i accidentally voted sega anyway!

bracken free ditch (Ste), Friday, 19 February 2010 10:29 (fifteen years ago)

master system vs NES- prob Sega
Game Gear vs Game Boy- Sega better system, game boy kills it for games. Nintendo
Megadrive/Genesis vs SNES- Sega tbh
evrything since- Nintendo in a walk.

quiz show flat-track bully (darraghmac), Friday, 19 February 2010 10:46 (fifteen years ago)

Nintendo; Sega was kinda the "evil empire" for me as a kid ("this Sonic is such a Mario ripoff" I'd think) though I did envy Madden on the Genesis. I loved my Dreamcast though, RIP.

begs the question, when is enough enough (Euler), Friday, 19 February 2010 10:58 (fifteen years ago)

tbh was very jealous of game gear and its 30 minute battery life

←→ + P = ☽☽☽☽☽☽☽ (dyao), Friday, 19 February 2010 10:58 (fifteen years ago)

up until N64, sonic > mario for me tbh.

30 min battery life? played it at home plugged into the wall.

quiz show flat-track bully (darraghmac), Friday, 19 February 2010 11:00 (fifteen years ago)

never had a console, home computers all the way.

otoh i did start that 'mario [...] never meant shit to me' thread, had a soft spot for sonic. plus, sega rally.

take me to your lemur (ledge), Friday, 19 February 2010 11:05 (fifteen years ago)

xp but again i don't remember a single decent game for it apart from the 4-in-1 that included columns and the tennis game.

although hwe rarely got consoles when they were new, over the years we had:

Atari 7800 (awesome)
Game boys (awesome, still play)
Game gear (long gone)
Megadrive (pretty good, got years out of it)
SNES (picked up for a fiver in the late 90's with about 100 games lol college)
PS1 (awesome)
N64 (fuck the haterz, this is my favourite non-portable console)
PS2 (pretty good, don't really have the time at this stage though)
DS- (great)
Wii (pretty good)

quiz show flat-track bully (darraghmac), Friday, 19 February 2010 11:10 (fifteen years ago)

oh my brother did have a gamecube, that was actually pretty rubbish iirc.

road rash!

but you know I didn't care after I started playing link's awakening

agree with you about n64 love I was gonna do a DC vs. N64 but no way I could pick DC conscionably xp

←→ + P = ☽☽☽☽☽☽☽ (dyao), Friday, 19 February 2010 11:12 (fifteen years ago)

link's awakening might well be my favourite game across any system

quiz show flat-track bully (darraghmac), Friday, 19 February 2010 11:32 (fifteen years ago)

^ got a gameboy color & links awakening (and 2 other games) for £4.99 from oxfam a couple of weeks ago.
wasn't expecting much but absolutely loved it, as good as link to the past.

zappi, Friday, 19 February 2010 12:46 (fifteen years ago)

i get lost when trying to remember some of these zelda games, i think i really loved links awakening but can't recall if i'm thinking of oracle of seasons.

which one had the part where you're inside some kind of revolving large barrel, and you need to rotate it to find the correct way out?

or was that minish cap?

they're all amazing though

f1ocki (s1ocki), Friday, 19 February 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

nes vs. master system
SNES vs. genesis
gameboy vs. game gear
N64 vs. dreamcast

the only one sega even has the chance of a look in is N64 vs. dreamcast but N64 had ocarina of time so

any other analysis stands only as proof of the existence of ur own tiny balls

SATURN

bracken free ditch (Ste), Friday, 19 February 2010 16:35 (fifteen years ago)

N64 vs. saturn, yeah. N64 wins by a country mile

it should be gamecube vs. dreamcast, dreamcast probably takes that one. just

Sega Channel could maybe have swayed me but I never had that.

MY RUSTIC CHURCHWARDEN PIPE TOBACCOS; WITH RED T-SHIRT OF SURF (Curt1s Stephens), Saturday, 20 February 2010 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

game gear had the master system converter, and was the first colour hand held. ahead of its time. i have a lot of respect for the way sega constantly innovated and stood by their mistakes - unlike nintendo who practically laughed gunpei yokoi out of the bulding as soon as the virtual boy flopped

sega cld have done a better job of mkt research tho realistically i mean they had the raddest consoles with the raddest games from saturn on but no1 bought them ;-;

i bought a dc because owning a saturn taught me absolutely nothing

just supersayin (Lamp), Saturday, 20 February 2010 20:06 (fifteen years ago)

dreamcast was DOPE: Chu Chu Rocket, Soul Calibur, Crazy Taxi, JGR, Shenmue, Seaman, SF3 Alpha, Rez, Power Stone, Dino Crisis, Grandia II...

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 20 February 2010 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

DC game I should probably be embarrassed that I loved but fuck it: 18 Wheeler

begs the question, when is enough enough (Euler), Saturday, 20 February 2010 20:28 (fifteen years ago)

its kinda bcum standard gamer challops 2 say but dc really did have an unfuckwithable line-up for the whole 18 months it was on the mkt. and btw on-line standard, vmus, fishing controllers, samba de amigo &c &c sega put mad innovation into the console.

realistically tho no1 can fuk w/the snes for all-time

just supersayin (Lamp), Saturday, 20 February 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

vmus were pretty strange: I had two of them but never really played any of the games on them and kinda thought wtf at the whole idea

begs the question, when is enough enough (Euler), Saturday, 20 February 2010 20:35 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, at first it's kind of a neat thing to see but it wasn't really utilized at all. Nintendo tried to use a similar idea with the GC/GBA connectivity with horrible results.

Nhex, Saturday, 20 February 2010 20:37 (fifteen years ago)

DC, oxymoronically, ahead of its time and behind it simultaneously

great lil' system while it lasted though!

nitzer ENBB (latebloomer), Saturday, 20 February 2010 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

I bought it on day one and played the shit out of Soul Calibur for years

nitzer ENBB (latebloomer), Saturday, 20 February 2010 21:29 (fifteen years ago)

why was the cord attached facing the player and not the system? Never got that.

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 20 February 2010 21:31 (fifteen years ago)

yeah! that always confused me too.

nitzer ENBB (latebloomer), Saturday, 20 February 2010 21:36 (fifteen years ago)

I bought it on day one it started selling for $50 (i.e. the day it was discontinued).

The controller sucked but it's been a great toy for my son, who used it as "his xbox" before he was old enough to know better.

begs the question, when is enough enough (Euler), Saturday, 20 February 2010 21:43 (fifteen years ago)

That's adorable.

crazy taxi mini games, just fucking addictive beyond belief.

My considered verdict: eh is ok

Physics are weird, it feels slow, level design is too reliant on bottonless pits (Casino Street zone is cordially invited to lick me), music is bland and unmemorable, yet still the best the franchise has been in 15 years.
