Burnout in Paradise City

Surprisingly this game is now scheduled to come out January 22nd - seems fast. I'm really looking forward to it, even if I'm a little nervous about how they've changed things up by setting the game in a free-roaming sandbox city. The multiplayer sounds interesting...

The new trailer explains a little bit more about how the single player game will work. It looks gorgeous, but I do worry I'm going to get lost during open city racing... seems like it would take a long time to memorize your way around. I wonder if there will be some kind of guide arrow you can turn on or off?

one month passes...

Demo is supposedly out on thursday. Can't decide if I want to spend the time to download or just wait for the official release! Don't exactly need to try it out to know if I want to buy it or not, but I guess I'm interested enough to want to see the slice they are putting out...

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

Every person who's had a chance to play a review code copy that I've heard talk about it is like "uh... i am not really allowed to talk about it... but... i can't wait until i am allowed to talk about it... because... you will be excited to hear about it." which is pretty much the best way ever to say backwardsly that this game is AWESOME.

Will M., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

The graphics of this game in motion may be the best I've ever seen in a driving game. Gotta go play more...

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 14 December 2007 03:40 (eighteen years ago)

A friend told me that every time you crash, a little box pops up showing the xbox live vision camera reaction of the dude you crashed into. This is the best thing ever, until the trou dropping starts.

melton mowbray, Sunday, 16 December 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha! can that be true??

Tracer Hand, Monday, 17 December 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

that is awesome and almost makes me want to buy one of those stupid cameras

also the demo is an assload of fun, I eagerly look forward to driving around aimlessly for hours and hours at a time

jamescobo, Monday, 17 December 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

Something like that is true for online races - I don't know if it's in the demo or not though (barely played online yet). I think you exchange pictures - so you get their frown of defeat and they get your mugshot of victory? I wonder if you'll be able to block the feature if it gets too annoying? With the xbox version you need their vision camera, but with the ps3 any standard usb camera will work, btw.

I did fool around with the demo I bit more - I thought it's a little too limited with what you can do, compared to what I understand about the final game - so in that sense, it's kind of a disappointment of a demo - really just good for getting an idea of what the game looks like - more than what it plays like. At least for the single player stuff.

one month passes...

It seems good, I guess? Spent a couple hours just driving around smashing into gates and billboards and did a few takedown races, stunt things and the like. The city is maybe a little smaller than I thought it was going to be - even if there's lots of levels to it to discover. i feel like I'm getting less lost than I was worried I would be. Since all the races end at one of eight points, it's not too hard to orient yourself (though I only tried out two or three races). Actaully everything is really easy so far - not sure if that's because I've played the hell out of the last couple games (99% complete on B3) - or because the game is just super easy. Oh - I'm sure it'll get harder towards the end (they always do), but I wish the beginning stuff was more of a challenge too & less sort of just busy work

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 05:17 (eighteen years ago)

I'm getting this today. I'm glad if the early stuff's easy, because since I don't drive in real life, it always seems a little bit harder to get used to a city I'm supposed to be able to drive around in real fast in games like this and the GTAs.

antexit, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 11:44 (eighteen years ago)

Ha - I don't drive in "real life" either.

The game is easy earlier on in the sense that you'll have three minutes to get four takedowns and I'll get fifteen, then the next race you'll have three minutes to get five takedowns and I'll get fifteen or sixteen. Stunt modes races early on require you to get say 10,000 points - and literally within ten seconds of starting the challenge I'll have well over - ending up with 30,000 or 40,000 points and I'm not even good at doing stunts. So in that sense, it worries me that the game is looking to be more of a grind than a challenge. Though I'm pretty sure it must get more difficult as you move up (though you'll have better cars which may balance out the difficulty - we'll see).

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

For me, the allure of a big sandbox city is exploration, and you can only explore so much from inside a car. I guess I like the openness of this game (based on the demo), but the structured races of the earlier games were a little more fun for me for some reason. Obviously the graphics are improved, especially the crash physics.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't figured out exactly why, but this game is just boring...

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 25 January 2008 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

your opinions mirror mine pretty well. sandbox + no walking = lame; not being able to jsut go to the race you want = boring; easyness = ugh. i played it at a buds house, and he LOVES it, but i dunno if i will get it... i may end up doing so though, because i like playing games w/ my frens.

Will M., Monday, 28 January 2008 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

Gave this another try last night and I do think it's good for the driving around looking at stuff, collecting stuff (i.e. hitting billboards and gates) part of the game. Unfortunately, it's supposed to be a racing game and the open world races just don't work. There's a reason real races take place on a track and not between two markers set on the opposite ends of a city. I even tried the online races, which seem to be five long races in a row (too long). Most everybody seemed to get just incredibly lost, with only two or three of eight racers even finishing any of the races before the game timed out. I finished in third w/o actually being able to finish even one of the five races! I just couldn't figure out where to go - and obviously while racing online you can't open a map and take a look to see what route to take. And that's the problem with the offline races too - sure you get lost, but having to open a map three times over the course of a short race really takes one out of the experience.

I took out Burnout and put in a traditional racing game right after, and it just felt sooo much more fun

MacElby's Puddin'© (stevie), Saturday, 8 November 2008 13:21 (seventeen years ago)

there are some serious problems with this game--free-roaming racing dont make much sense--but it's still fun to grab for an hour here and there.

s1ocki, Saturday, 8 November 2008 17:08 (seventeen years ago)

whoa wait wtf at hover car?

CHARMING LMAO (John Justen), Saturday, 8 November 2008 20:10 (seventeen years ago)

also looks great

s1ocki, Saturday, 8 November 2008 21:27 (seventeen years ago)

I love the graphics, especially now that they added a day night cycle. The racing just sucks

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 8 November 2008 21:55 (seventeen years ago)

really enjoyed piling around on motorbikes on this last night, but still, the races suck ass, maybe I just need to ride around and learn the place a bit more but it get's way too complicated to run a race properly when there's so much stuff going on.

problem chimp (Porkpie), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 08:48 (seventeen years ago)

they are releasing a for-pay patch that lets you restart races at will.

cozwn, Sunday, 25 January 2009 13:28 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, but you get all 4 for $8. I'm not sure my craving for nostalgia is equal to $8.

Anyone on ps3? Lookin' for friends... (I'm EZSnappin, if you care to add)

i take back every dumb negative thing i said about this game. having recently got a TV made this century, and figured out that i can swap the drab s/track for my own (ace as it was to rock to faith no more, soundgarden, jane's addiction and alice in chains, there was too much woeful emo on there too), i've finally found the groove of this game. and it rules.

leck mich im arshavin (cozen), Saturday, 22 May 2010 13:18 (sixteen years ago)

wait - don't you live in LA? how does that even work?

ha - never said I wasn't a weirdo! Actually, I live in a neighborhood with like 100 restaurants within a 5-15 minute walk distance, 10 cafes, 2 supermarkets, 2 movie theaters, etc... and about a twenty minute walk from my office (a nice way to start the day imo), so I make it work. I wouldn't recommend it for everybody, but getting around LA without a car is a lot more common than people think - in fact, over 1,500,000 people use the public transport system here (buses, subways and trains) every day - it'll get you everywhere, you just have to have some patience. If desperate, one can always call a friend, taxi, or rent a car (I do have a license).

The funny thing is I used to hate driving, but the racing video games I've gotten into the last few years have made me sort of want a car again. So far I just haven't been able to justify the expense to myself, thinking about how little I actually need one (since I've been able to get around pretty much fine w/o one for so long). I don't know.

Picked up the new NFS Most Wanted, it's basically Burnout Paradise 2 in disguise. It's fantastic, and I want you all to play it with me.

JimD, Saturday, 3 November 2012 00:04 (thirteen years ago)

Hold up, really? That sounds tempting

Jesus said "What the hell is a Wumpscut?" (jjjusten), Saturday, 3 November 2012 03:14 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i (maybe drunkenly) bought this for ps3 in the interest of comparing it w/ forza horizon. both are awesome games but holy shit, the nfs:mw multiplayer is so incredibly stupid and amazing. the key to the whole experience is that, once you are eliminated from a challenge, you are able and encouraged to fuck around with everyone else still competing, that is, there is never a point in the game where you are not supposed to be ramming the shit out of other dudes for the sheer fuck-you-ness of it all.

adam, Sunday, 4 November 2012 18:04 (thirteen years ago)

I plan on picking this up soon for PS3. Loved Paradise so much.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 5 November 2012 03:20 (thirteen years ago)

This is really fun.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 11 November 2012 21:39 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm getting up the the harder bits now and even when it's kicking my arse repeatedly it's still generally a fun time.
