Here comes the sequel, finally. THing is, this is in 3d, so is it just going to be a Spiderman rip?

Featuring a white dude with dreads.

I'm with everyone who said this looks like shit.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 05:41 (eighteen years ago)

bizarre, was only playing this randomly on MAME last night.

Ste, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 09:25 (eighteen years ago)

with the power of ram state saves, I HAVE BEATEN BIONIC COMMANDO. which i seriously doubt anyone had ever done before, in history.

gff, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

the video trailer looked pretty cool, but the writing is like Are You Base-level bad.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, Mike Patton?

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

the writing is like Are You Base-level bad.

heh. the only saving grace of shit like this is when the japanese language tracks are available, and you can turn subtitles on. It makes the horrid WTFness go down SOOOOO much better. Wretched voice acting and dialogue is english is intolerable, but subtitled dialogue can have a certain level of batshit incoherency and still remain acceptable. this is how i was able to make it thru Onimusha 1 & 3(for PC, where you copy/paste out the japanese dialogue mp3s in place of hte english ones).

Then again, maybe watching too much subbed anime has lowered that threshold.

kingfish, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 23:24 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, Mike Patton?

Yeah apparently he has a 'unique' vocal style. Check out that wikipedia link above. It says he also did a voice in Portal (the anger sphere? dont recall it) and The Darkness.

Ste, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 09:34 (eighteen years ago)

Mike's been doing free jazz/experimental for years; I just didn't know he was doing voiceover work. So odd.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

Mike is the growly voice of the red-eyed CPU orb in the boss battle.

three months pass...

I'm looking forward to the remake a lot more...

I beat this on the NES when I was 12, and it was probably my life's greatest achievement up to that point. That, or blowing up Mother Brain.

I agree with any and all comments regarding both the seeming shittiness of the new version and the apparent awesomeness of the remake. The 2D remake might be my most anticipated game of '08. The original Bionic Commando is probably my favorite game of all time.

Garrett Martin, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

does anyone know if the remake is in unreal 3 engine? or is it an in-house engine?

Will M., Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

i wish the remake was coming out for DS.

Jordan, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

Two-Player Cooperative Swing Action

Am I the only one who found this hilarious?

This does look pretty cool.

B.L.A.M., Wednesday, 20 February 2008 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

via Kotaku - OUCH!

"Bionic Commando Rearmed on PC will have high-res textures. Bionic Commando Rearmed on PS3 will have high-res textures. Bionic Commando Rearmed on Xbox Live Arcade? Not-so-high-res textures. BC producer Ben Judd has said that, thanks to Xbox Live Arcade's file-size restrictons, which limit games offered on the service to 150MB, the XBLA version's textures won't be of the same quality as those found on the PS3 and PC."

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 22 February 2008 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

haha, pc wins agane

kingfish, Saturday, 23 February 2008 08:40 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder if it'll be on steam? or how does capcom sell their smaller pc games (maybe this is the first?)? Did you see the footage on the 1up show of the VR puzzle missions (which looked pretty cool)?

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 23 February 2008 08:56 (eighteen years ago)

four months pass...

The remake was (still is?) scheduled for a July release. No solid release date to be found though.

I reeeeeeally wanna play this.

circa1916, Monday, 21 July 2008 23:37 (seventeen years ago)

mid-August now. two weeks from today, perhaps?

I'm still excited.

Garrett Martin, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

Comes out tomorrow on XBLA and Thursday for PS3.

Super positive review up at IGN: http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/897/897976p1.html

SO PSYCHED!

circa1916, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

I was just going to post this! Really looking forward to Thursday.

It's a little bit of a shame though that the multiplayer stuff isn't online...

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

I played this a bit before work. Seems good thus far. The new-fangled 3-D topographical map thing is pretty ugly, and either the trucks are faster or the copter is slower, but neither's a big deal.

Garrett Martin, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago)

I'm waiting for Dtoid's Chad C. to review it, I really trust his reviews on this kinda game and he didn't really like the preview builds at all.

Will M., Wednesday, 13 August 2008 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

Did you play the original? It was my favorite game when I was 11.

Garrett Martin, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 18:41 (seventeen years ago)

The game's a blast. If you enjoyed the original game, I don't see how you can dislike this.

Total steal for 10 bucks.

circa1916, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 19:40 (seventeen years ago)

Will - it seems like the kind of game you might like. Try out the demo. It's pretty challenging stuff - sort of reminds me of N+ actually. All those challenge rooms too. Anybody know what you have to do to unlock 'em?

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 14 August 2008 01:26 (seventeen years ago)

There are challenge rooms at each of the friendly bases. Once you "activate" them or whatever they're accessible through the main menu.

circa1916, Thursday, 14 August 2008 03:57 (seventeen years ago)

Co-op is fun. Not sold on the other multiplayer modes though. Maybe once I get more used to the controls?

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:21 (seventeen years ago)

You're all insane. I never played the original, but I tried this last night and it was AWFUL. Action game where you can't jump: interesting idea. Action game where you can't jump and people shoot at your legs: oh fuck off.

JimD, Thursday, 14 August 2008 13:18 (seventeen years ago)

Hey, at least you start off with a health bar in this one. And the ability to save.

I've always thought the original BC's difficulty was overstated. Yeah, it's tough, but rarely in a cheap way, like Mega Man or Ninja Gaiden. And once you get past the first stage you can basically get continues at will in the overhead levels.

Garrett Martin, Thursday, 14 August 2008 13:30 (seventeen years ago)

Last night I was too busy playing REAL LIFE DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS! AMAZING! but tongiht i will try to pop on xblive and check it out.

really really excited for next week's galaga legions though. the pacman ce guys do my other fave 80s arcade game! yay!

Will M., Thursday, 14 August 2008 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

You rarely get people shooting at your legs. When you do, you've always got that arm to deflect incoming bullets or something above you to pull yourself up on. Anyway, that's BIONIC COMMANDO.

xxpost

circa1916, Thursday, 14 August 2008 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

Plus there's always a few seconds between shots from the enemies, so it's pretty easy to avoid a round, drop down / pull up, and fire off a couple shots before they unload again.

The hard parts come from spikes and those areas where you have one tiny square to latch onto. These two are very often combined, of course.

Garrett Martin, Thursday, 14 August 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)

GOD this game is hard. even the tutorial was hard!!

one month passes...

I'd never played the original game so I picked up the GBA port. So far it seems much harder than the remake that came out last year. I'm having a really hard time just on the first level because so many fucking more enemies just keep spawning in. From the above comments, am I right to think you have to beat this game on one go too (unlike the remake which saves after you finish a level)?

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 18 January 2009 19:00 (seventeen years ago)

by original, I meant original NES game, not the arcade

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 18 January 2009 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

I believe so - I was always pretty bad at that game, and never got past a couple of levels. I still liked it despite that, though! I'd hope the remake was more forgiving (unlike say Mega Man 9 which is just as hard if not worse than any of the old ones) with modern features like the level saving.

I actually... quite like the demo for the new one

anyone else w/me?

zinguist (cozwn), Monday, 4 May 2009 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

Have they made it available for non-Gold subscribers yet?

Telephone thing, Thursday, 7 May 2009 14:13 (seventeen years ago)

I hated the demo, but then again I was horrible at it.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 7 May 2009 18:45 (seventeen years ago)

Just read on Joystiq that they've patched the demo and you can now create a private local server to screw around and learn the controls in. Why they didn't just release.a SP demo in the first place is beyond me. Was anyone really looking forward to this for the multiplayer?

Telephone thing, Thursday, 7 May 2009 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

So um this is pretty good you guys

(still not gonna play the MP though)

Telephone thing, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 19:45 (seventeen years ago)

...okay, the "radiation" in this game is bullshit. It's still enjoyable, but whoever thought the player should be punished for exploring needs to be fired. From a cannon. Into the sun. It's still enjoyable, and the levels are gradually opening up, or seem to be, but the blatantly artificial constraints are terrible.

Also, I never thought I would say this, but Mike Patton needs to shut up. The first time I shot an enemy and heard him bray "NAILED YA!" it was so incongruous it was a bit funny, but it's not endearing. And while I'm bitching, the title character's resemblance to a roided-up Sam Rockwell (plus whiteboy dreads) is downright uncanny.

But I still like it! I just wish I hadn't paid full price for it, forgot to cancel my preorder after all the negative feedback from the demo.

Telephone thing, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 01:31 (seventeen years ago)

wow, two "it's still enjoyable"s. Why do I get the feeling I'm trying to convince myself I like this more than I actually do? NAH

Telephone thing, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 01:34 (seventeen years ago)

Finally gave the demo a shot... DO NOT WANT

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 01:44 (sixteen years ago)

Still plugging away at this, though TF2's taking most of my spare time lately, and while the levels continue to get better and less obviously restricting, the guns continue to suck and Patton gets worse somehow. Either he has no idea how actual human beings talk, which I doubt, or he got shitty direction.

Telephone thing, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 00:22 (sixteen years ago)

Is the demo still multiplayer only? I hear the story mode is solid.
