I never played any of these games before but now want to check the series out. I've got a few questions. Should I start at the beginning or are the later games better (or worse)? Looking at xbox.com it appears that the whole series on there is backwards compatible on the 360 (I don't have an original xbox), but I know the games also came on for ps2 - is one version better than the other? I believe I read there were maybe extra levels on the earlier games when they came out on ps2? I don't really have a controller preference - more interested in better graphics, but I'd assume both systems versions are about equal?

I've heard some people say that the most recent game, Double Agent, is a bit tired. I actually have a copy already of this one that my brother gave me a while ago, because he couldn't get into it. Would I be better off picking up one of the earlier games first? Or since I've never played any of them, will Double Agent actually be a good a point of entry as any of them (or maybe better, since it's on the 360)?

The games are pretty good, altohugh 1and 2 might feel dated by now. I'd say, skip to Chaos Theory. I haven't played Double Agent yet, but I bet it won't be tired if it's only the second you've played (instead of the 4th).

antexit just reminded me of the wii version of this, which is the gayest game ever made.

it's one of those help-your-buddy-out games and whenever the npc needs instance he goes "come here... i need you" in this really hilarious macho voice

in answer to the above question, it's best to play these games in order, starting with the first. they're all pretty great except double agent, which im playing now.
last year i spent a month playing through the entire series but stopped when i got to DA as the mouse+keyboard controls were just awful (fisher would walk incredibly slowly while a slight movement of the mouse sent the viewpoint spinning wildly, even on lowest settings). last week i tried again using an xbox 360 controller and it plays ok with that.
im about halfway through the game and i just got to the 'unencrypt the email from massoud' task which is some enormous bullshit - i don't load up splinter cell to be forced into playing some bafflingly shit and difficult sudoku subgame. encountering this section made me realise how crappy this installment of SC really is - playing through the same rubbish headquarters level over and over, with no clues as to where to go or how to get to it. expected to do those lame subgame missions EVERY TIME i enter HQ. the most useless map system in the history of ever. a whole bunch of weapons that are barely ever used. tons of minor annoyances with how opsat etc works. shitty graphics too. and as one final kick in the dick, 50% of the time i play it ends with a BSOD.
despiiiite this, there's something quite pleasurable about finally getting past one tricky point, even if it is all trial & error. it's a great idea for a game and though the makers tried their best they couldn't manage to fuck it up too badly.

this new splinter cell is brilliant. 100x better than the last crappy effort. brand new control system, much less stealth-based than before - though you can still play it like that if you choose - they've geared it towards more of a blasting action game, but a really really good one. looks gorgeous too, and has a great range of locations, one of my favourite games of the year so far.

ha, im shouting into a three year void year but fuck me i love this series.
cpl of months ago bought a long-awaited ps3 but it led to some of the utterly miserable 'big game' playing experiences: heavy rain (crap film with a crap plot), crysis 3 (seems so different from the brilliant two previous ones, what went wrong??), uncharted 2 (worst dialogue/plot ever, shitty controls, no sense of satisfaction), tomb raider (see uncharted 2 except with more focus on the funless puzzles), dark souls (first 30 mins was kinda zzz and the whole orcs and hobbits shit isn't my bag). honourable exceptions: borderlands 2 & far cry 3 (and the even-better DLC).
in a bid to find something awesome so i've been playing the DLC from the hugely underrated SC: CONVICTION and man it's incredible. hard as nails but in a way where you actually learn and grow as a player each time, and not like the uncharted 2 'well done you have taken the exact pattern of steps down this narrow narrow path that you were meant to'. even though the dlc are little more than 'kill all the dudes in this building' i can't stop playing it. just bought the first 3 splinter cell games for £10 as they're available as some bulk buy thing for the ps3 on amazon, can't wait to go through them again.
one question: i played the first three using mouse and keys, am i likely to get frustrated using the ps3 pad instead? with games like crysis, metro etc i like having the accuracy of a mouse.
2nd question, are any of the other tom clancy games like this? the rainbow ones, sniper ones etc? (one game that is similar and even-more criminally-ignored: THE SABOTEUR)
oh and yeah, super excited for SC: BLACKLIST in a couple of weeks. surprised this series doesn't get more love on here. probably my all-time favourite games of ever.

how much person-torturing do you have to do in this one?
― adam, Thursday, 29 August 2013 01:03 (twelve years ago)
one shitload
― NI, Thursday, 29 August 2013 01:17 (twelve years ago)
no, you can play it almost pure-stealth if you want and that's immensely satisfying. but so is going around quietly knocking everyone unconscious. not played it on full-on assault blow-everyone-away mode yet but can see that being pretty great once you upgrade your kit to a certain level (though not as good as the sneaky modes)
― NI, Thursday, 29 August 2013 01:18 (twelve years ago)
in conviction there's all those like press x to shove this guy's face in a fucking urinal bits. made me kinda uncomfortable. i like splinter cell but not 24 if that makes sense.

does it have Russians saying "must have been nothing" when you stagger about bumping into things like a drunk and accidentally firing yr gun before hiding in a triangle of shadow behind a filing cabinet? that's all I rly care about.

lol. i was trying to remember other ones, but i only got 'i can SMELL your fear' which i think was Fallout 3. I still say 'must have been nothing' when i go into a room and forget what i went in there for.
my life is tremendously exciting.
― Fizzles, Thursday, 29 August 2013 06:24 (twelve years ago)
Ha. I say that shit too. For many scenarios. It stays with you. Perhaps it's the relief we felt when we heard it.
