Lamp, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 00:44 (fourteen years ago)

tbqf im really getting excited for this - probably scoring some kind of hat or keychain idk get it preordered for me for my bday so - the class system sounds p great & the lack of random encounters is, well it could be good.

still dont really get having a major mp component to what in na is really just another aspie shut-in title but ohhhhhh wellll

or the glass-half-full version: finally, an in-game reward for going to all those stupid Star Trek conventions!

can't wait for DQ9 btw; sucks that I won't be able to take advantage of the downloadable stuff but it sounds like it'll be a minute before I run out of content anyway

i saw this thread title a few times and only noticed this time that it said 11. haha. man. i love how my brain doesn't so much read things as it like skims them for letters and says "yeah, that's that thing"

Quantic Dream, So Hard To Beat (Will M.), Thursday, 8 July 2010 16:05 (fourteen years ago)

I am so stoked for this! I was in a video game store and they had an ad for it w/the Dragon Quest opening music playing on the PA – I got hyped up like a little kid.

Mr & Mrs The Devil (Abbott), Friday, 9 July 2010 01:21 (fourteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

I started playing this last night!

Warum habt Ihr mich totgefüttert? (Abbott), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

i cant seem to summon the energy to get past the character creation...

TEEN LESBIAN (Lamp), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

this is pretty great

TOM SHITTYBISSELL (jamescobo), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 20:43 (fourteen years ago)

I like this a lot so far. I think the menus really need to be streamlined and the font needs to be bigger and less 1994-looking but overall, I'm having a good time with this game. The move away from random encounter is definitely a bonus.

I have to go and find an abbot (not Abbott) so I can stop being a minstrel now.

Totally OTM. So nice not to have to encounter a slime if you don't fucking want to.

SO far the only thing I dislike is a lot of the sidequests are dumb, but that's a thing in RPGs where you gotta use the Serenity Prayer bcz that's not changing anytime soon.

strong women who were willing to remember a mom? (Abbott), Saturday, 31 July 2010 05:10 (fourteen years ago)

Ok, I am not very far (still) in this game but it doesn't have a very good story. Normally I don't even care about that (when has Dragon Quest ever had a really interesting plot?), but this whole kind of vaguely defined "uh maybe let's get some more benevolessence I guess?" story really fails to move things forward. I don't have a lot of motivation to move forward.

spanikopitcon (Abbott), Thursday, 5 August 2010 19:43 (fourteen years ago)

the quests (both story and side) are really clearly just pegs holding together the alchemy/job skills/item collection strands of the game, which are the real point. certainly that is whats driving me fwd and holding my attention. teh skills mastery system is a joy, & i think all the talk about how much there is to do once your finished the game is really credible.

i liked the story in DQ8 & am disappointed that this one is so boring and slight but tbqf im such a sucker for any kind of job system that i really dont care.

jesus was a contenderizer (Lamp), Thursday, 5 August 2010 19:51 (fourteen years ago)

hey i've been playing this and each town being based on a different regional UK dialect has been amusing - is this the same localisation in the US, or do they have a different one riffing on US accents?

zappi, Thursday, 5 August 2010 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

I think it's the same in the US. I remember reading somewhere that Nintendo weren't sure it would do so well there because of all the British in-jokes and accents. What accent is Port Lllwehhwhatever supposed to be, btw? I'm guessing 'generic Welsh'?

salsa shark, Thursday, 5 August 2010 21:49 (fourteen years ago)

yeh, Welsh. there are a lot of in-jokes and old-fashioned choices of words, some of the language in the Scottish town i last heard used by my grandfather!

zappi, Friday, 6 August 2010 00:35 (fourteen years ago)

What kind of team are you guys using, for those of you who haven't yet abandoned this? I've unlocked a couple of the 'advanced' classes but I'm not sure if/when I should switch jobs. I have minstrel, martial artist, mage, and thief. Kind of want to change the minstrel and thief to a paladin and armamentalist but I don't know if that would leave me with just the martial artist for immense damage-doing.

The overall storyline to this seems a bit predictable so far, but I like that the small stories in each town are a bit weird. The Bloomingdale one was almost Layton-esque, I thought.

one year passes...

wtf so am i the only ilxor who loved this and played like more than a hundred fucking embarassing hours

NZA, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 05:41 (thirteen years ago)

yeah the story was not quite dq8 lvl but the addictiveness was through the roof

NZA, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 05:42 (thirteen years ago)

i didn't play it for a few months but then my buddy started and i brought him in on some metal king slime hunts and he one time rose ten levels after one fight i shit you not.

NZA, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 05:44 (thirteen years ago)

I had/have like a dozen printouts of stuff I need to grind to be able to make 80% of the alchemies, but then I did some study into what the other 20% requires and yikes. And then I put it down for a little while, and down it stayed. I'd have to go back and be sure I have all of the files an decipher some of my chicken-scratch writing to even think about finishing.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 11:52 (thirteen years ago)

I played/adored the hell out of this game when it came out and for a few months after. I think I'm around or near 100 hrs. I didn't get into the post-game content much... tried a couple of the hidden dungeons but found the difficulty of the bosses too unpredictable to keep going with it. I didn't get a chance to play co-op at all.

salsa shark, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 18:09 (thirteen years ago)

I played quite a bit of the post-game, but those ultimate alchemy items, yikes! I made 2 of the 'unlucky' mixes then gave up.
