Rain in games (and perhaps water, fire, or other particle effects)

Bring them here, I adore a good storm or rain moment in my games. Water and fire, explosions and rain, have always been difficult to recreate in games. Who does it best?

(thread created after seeing the rain effect in the new Formal 1 game)

Riding round in a thunderstorm in 5.1 surround sound is AMAZING in Red Dead Redemption.

the storm level in left 4 dead 2 is great. it's probably the only part in those games that's actually frightening on some level.

The Bast Castle level of Jedi Academy has acid rain, which causes real problems because it rapidly depletes your health.

Weather changes from region to region in Morrowind are pretty great.

It's pretty but 90% of the time it will fuck up your fps. That Hurricane Katrina survival game is a few years off sadly.

Seeing the rain fall in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was the point where I was like, "OK, the Super NES is officially the greatest thing ever."

I'm with you there, at age 11 it was like I got catapulted into THE FUTURE.tm

Generally a big fan of the fanciness of particle emitters these days, but just completed Borderlands, and I very nearly didn't bother with that last mission; there's particles (snow? ash?) everywhere, and it's damn near impossible to see what you're trying to do.

Yeah Bad Company 2 suffers from this a bit. Makes it more realistic but damn hard to see anything at times.

I usually turn off the higher volumetric effects in games since they can stress out the GPU something fierce, but Napoleon: Total War has interesting effects with rain and snow, and there are mods were you can up the amount of musket & cannon smoke that hang around the field.

yes one thing that annoys me in a lot of games, which I think is more of a console restriction, is how quickly particle effects vanish. So you don't get prolonged explosions or smoke effects.

(i think on pc this is tuneable in most games isn't it, i wouldn't know I don't own one!)
