Why aren't there any "Learn Swahili" console games?

The PS3 seems ideal to learn languages with, especially if you have a headset. But I literally can't find any games like this, either from the online store or in shops. ???? It seems like a huge hole in the market..

Why is the PS3 better for learning languages than a PC?

Cause I can sit on the couch!

Although maybe there is a "funnier" answer to that question

If it was going to happen, it was gonna be Far Cry 2 DLC.

i'm surprised there aren't any online games that pair up native speakers who know the language that the other wants to learn as a team against other pairs to do some quests or something, so they'd have to teach each other the language to advance. maybe a multi-lingual triva game?

i guess this could just end up with people being able to say stuff like "prithee, cast heal on me good sir, mine legs have been frozen by the foul wizard CamelToe69" but useless at normal conversation...

I blew up a boat on a multi-player game once and the other players responded "scheisse boot!" so I learned some german that day.

Philip Nunez, Monday, 26 July 2010 20:11 (fifteen years ago)

ha

are you sure they didn't say "schiess boot" (I hope they didn't)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Path_dependence

ppl who want to learn another language don't turn on their console, let alone buy one

ppl using consoles aren't partic interested in education of any kind, let alone language.

software makers aren't jumping in because there's not much of a market.

I don't know if this is an unclearable hurdle, though.
Guitar Hero has been a spectacular money-maker from a similarly "uninterested" market.
(uninterested in making music versus learning language)

I think a language game for xbla that was actually fun and meant for beginners would be pretty popular.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Monday, 26 July 2010 20:27 (fifteen years ago)

There are DS language games. Guess that the userbase, cheapness of producing and perception that you can use the thing for educational purposes are all much higher there though. And there's still a fairly limited choice of languages (shame, as I could do with a Cantonese one).

chat-roulette could be a good language learning exchange if they perfect a dong-filter.

Philip Nunez, Monday, 26 July 2010 20:39 (fifteen years ago)

video games - with avatars, unlocking achievements, etc - offer such a great paradigm for learning shit it seems to me.

maybe a TV set suggests too much of a "turn brane off now" vibe, is the answer? as has been said above, "brain challenge" puzzle games are a huge draw on portables like the DS

i think this demarcation we older folks have about TV = passive and computers = active will blur though. i mean, sony wants the PS3 to be your media hub! games, videos, movies. why not everything else?

basically i agree with polyphonic, a language game that was actually fun and simple would be a solid earner. cartoon characters, whatever.

i waited for fully-realized 3D tits on a playstation game for approx 10 years and then when i got them i realized that my desire was somewhat unwarranted
