Everyday Shooter

Finally downloaded this (psn) game since the price has, for the next few days or so, been reduced to five bucks. Ten bucks seemed like a bit much - but five bucks definitely feels good - I'm glad I've given it a shot. I really like the design work - even the simplicity of the menu system feels refreshing.

Yes - it's another two stick shooter, where you are a tiny ship, shooting various things moving around the screen, and trying to set up chain explosions (you only get points by picking up the little dot remains of the chains you've hopefully set off). But the artwork, and especially the music make the game a joy to play. All the music is simple guitar based sounds - there's a background theme - that gets modified and mixed with the sounds of you playing the game - it's actually a very relaxing kind of music & slightly slow game play - your ship moves kind of slowly and you fire kind of slowly compared to Geometry Wars (for example).

I've so far only got to the third level, but you don't seem to get but one kind of weapon to fire, which also adds to the different feel. And since you only get points by picking up the remains of chains - the scores look to be pretty low - my highest score so far is in the mid seven-hundreds!

One other different (good, interesting) thing about the game is that you can use the points you earn to unlock additional content. For instance, you can use your points to so that you start the game with more lives, or (I think) to unlock levels you haven't been able to get to by playing the game on normal (because it's damn hard).

On the negative side, the lack of an online leaderboard is definitely felt - I'd love to be able to easily see how I stacked up against other players. Also - the game is pretty hard - partially because your ship is so small, it's easy to lose track of - and you have to be pretty patient and observant to try to unlock each levels secrets - and I really want to get to the later levels and see / hear what's there. I'm hoping there's a way to eventually unlock unlimited lives - so you could just keep playing until you get to the end (that would also make a cool leader board - how many lives did it take you to get through the game as well as how many points were you able to get).

Anyhow, definitely worth five dollars...

It was also one of those games where the first couple of times I played I was thinking it was crap, and then somehow on the third try everything clicked - not that I got good at it, but just that suddenly I started to enjoy it and want to get better, and wanted to keep playing and playing

You have a PS3? I thought there wasn't a single PS3er on here.

I really like it, but I am having far more difficulty picking it up than Super Stardust HD, for example. The ship moves really slowly and I find it very hard to pick up all the points before they disappear - both the points and the ship are very small, and they don't seem to gravitate to you.

I agree - Super Stardust is a "better" game in a lot of ways - I think it's totally worth 10 bucks while I see Everyday Shooter as more reasonable when priced as a five dollar experiment. The only problem I have with Super Stardust - and why I don't play it more - is that, while I'm not great at it - I've only made it to the 4th world so far - the games tend to last pretty long (too long?) for a casual shooter type game - every play is usually 25 or 30 minutes - and quite exhausting. Everyday Shooter is really more casual - since each level lasts only for about four minutes (I've also only made it to level four on it). I also enjoy its music more. Like you say, you definitely can't pick up all the little point drops. The key is just to pick up as many as you can - you can fly a little faster supposedly when not shooting - so try to shoot off a big chain, then stop shooting and collect. My high score is now a little over 1,400 (I wish there were online leader boards so I could figure if that's any good).

paid $10 for this on a whim.

it's fun! beyond a doubt the most indie rock game of all time too, for better or worse!

does anyone know the best way for beating the third level (the one with the robots moving out from the centre)? still have not been able to beat this

The eye level? You just got to kind of move around and avoid stuff. When the robots are moving out, you can shoot the blinking ones to get the blue pickups - ignore the non-blinking robots. In the phase where the eye opens and all the little eyes are flying around - shoot the big eye, move around in circles avoiding the little eyes, while shooting the big eye in the center of the screen as much as you can - it'll get really small then start spitting out blue pick ups too. If you shoot the flying fried eggs they also cause the little eyes to blow up and turn into pick ups.

You may want to use the points you've earned to buy some extra lives to get you over the hump, or unlock the level on single play just to practice that level. I still haven't unlocked all the levels, but the next couple are pretty neat
