Well, unlike FIFA 11, PES 11 does feel very different than last year's version and that's (so far, after four games) a very good thing. The huge difference is in the passing system, which now feels skill based and is quite tricky to get the hang of (I assume I'll eventually "get" it though, right now it's unfortunately easy to kick the ball further than intended). The game doesn't play itself anymore and the passing system feels a lot more engaging than what they have in FIFA this year. But it's harder, which might turn some people off. They've also gotten rid of the clumsy way players sort of bumped & thumped together when you were going for the ball, though it's still very easy to foul, especially when pressing with a second player. Overall, everything just feels much smoother than last year's version (though maybe still not as smooth as FIFA, which has a deeper animation system for sure). The graphics on PC in 1080p and at a rock solid 60FPS are again stunning, especially replays, just so much detail. Unfortunately I don't think the PC version is coming out in North America again this year, who knows why.

yes of course every game must be followed by a 3 minute video that i can't skip. seabass never change
― sonderangerbot, Friday, 17 September 2010 16:58 (fifteen years ago)
this at least looks a lot better than fifa11 on my non-hd 21"
― sonderangerbot, Friday, 17 September 2010 17:25 (fifteen years ago)
mixed bag. passing good. graphics good. difficult, perhaps overly so, to score from any sort of range, but keepers are complete idiots up close, ie just run straight at them and boot it in.
― Efraqueen Juárez (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 12:32 (fifteen years ago)
also cam angles annoying. tilting rather than just straight left right pan.
― Efraqueen Juárez (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 12:33 (fifteen years ago)
jeff's first reactions make me feel better about this, because this game has had pig-stupid AI for too long now

downloaded this
- my old tricks don't work! i.e. i can't automatically outrun the opposition when i bomb down the flanks. this is good
- passing requires a LOT more accuracy both in direction and weight, i.e. the ball doesn't automatically go to whichever teammate is nearest the vague direction you've chosen. not sure whether this is good or bad
- my guys don't seem to hold onto the ball as well when receiving it
- in general it feels cooler though, more nuanced
- i like the camera angles, feels like i can see more of the field
― progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Friday, 24 September 2010 13:43 (fifteen years ago)
-the ref still sucks. although little better than 2010.-the linesmen got bad. wrong offside calls.-hard to perform feints and tricks.

Pleased with this so far. Right sitck for defense is a HUGE addition. Final game (at least on PC) feels better than the demo (less fouling thank God). Beglin's commentary is as wooden and forced as the robot he replaced, is about my only complaint. Stadium editor is the business - definitely going to spend some hours fooling with that. Overall, I feel like it compares favorably to classic PES. Definitely prefering this over FIFA 11.
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 8 October 2010 16:35 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, huge improvement from the demo, especially the amount of fouls. the animation when a player got tackled sucks though. they fall like avoiding a rat or something.
by the way, what do you mean by right stick for defense?
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 8 October 2010 17:28 (fifteen years ago)
I tried to find a good explanation of the right stick additions in regards to defense (I know I read one somewhere) but the key thing is when pressing, you push the right stick towards the ball (instead of just holding x/a and closing in) and if you get your timing right, it helps you to win the ball... I'm still trying to get the hang of it myself, I did find this one right up (but I know I read/saw a better one a wekk or so ago)
First of all we have holding X and pushing the stick back towards your own goal. It’s a key feature against the very skilful and quick players in the game. The ability to avoid challenges with intricate precision is available to every player with decent technique, meaning rushing in will be punished, so this manoeuvre becomes very key when playing. Accompanying this with Square to bring a teammate over works very well. The second defence manoeuvre is called tracking, and is done by just holding X. Now here’s the big change that takes the most time getting used to: holding X does not tackle! That’s right, all this does now is track the player closely, without committing to a challenge, or even committing to try and intercept a pass or dribbling path. The final manoeuvre is actually tackling and committing, and that’s done by holding X and pushing the stick towards the opposition player in possession of the ball. This is the key point to fully comprehend and understand. And while all are easy to take in, all 3 take hours of practice to master.

You can't hold X and use the right stick at the same time. Am I missing something?
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 8 October 2010 18:57 (fifteen years ago)
it's the left stick, I think, not right
― luis guzman baking a pie, Friday, 8 October 2010 22:00 (fifteen years ago)
hold away on left stick + X to jockey back with the attacker, press towards + X to put a foot in. the instructions say "hold X to track back with the attacker" but that did nothing for me in the demo.
― luis guzman baking a pie, Friday, 8 October 2010 22:03 (fifteen years ago)
aha! there is actually a 'right stick defense' option. my bad.

no - ha - like I said, not the best written description from that blog & I'm still figuring out the new systems myself, but you press up with x/a then sort of lunge in with the right stick (I think), you can let go of x/a when you use the r. stick.

i still don't get it. "holding X and pushing the stick towards the opposition player in possession of the ball"? how could you do that with the right stick?

from two posts up
though I do think it's p bad game design if it makes you change grip

can't be as bad as the current game design that doesn't let you control fuck all of what happens tbh
if this gets good ilx press, i will buy a PS3 for it.

I hope that next year they add the Wii controls to the PS3 version. I'd buy a Move just for that.

based on the demos i like this a lot more than fifa. mind you, i got so sick of fifa 10 in the end that i could barely stand to play the demo of 11 at all. me and a friend played a bunch of 2p on the pes demo over the weekend and, while far from perfect, it was fun to play and not overly annoying or frustrating, and in these lean times that is as good as i can hope for.

― progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 14 October 2010 13:02 (fifteen years ago)
i'm indeed finding fifa 11 frustrating but not sure yet whether this is a good or a bad thing (a lot of that frustration comes from the fact that the computer now plays objectively better than me)
― licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 14 October 2010 14:24 (fifteen years ago)
passing on the demo just seems insanely hard - in pes 2010 you'd just gesture toward the player you wanted to pass to - this one seems to take your stick direction literally
― progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Friday, 15 October 2010 00:31 (fifteen years ago)
that would be a major improvement imo. i'm sick of AI making increasingly more stupid decisions on my behalf in passing, runs, tackles etc with each incarnation since PES5

the manual passing comes with a price. it's nearly impossible to pass to a teammate 1-3 meters from you.

RIP Darren Fletcher
― cant believe you sb'd me for that (darraghmac), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 09:32 (fifteen years ago)
it's true that the computer often used make infuriating passing decisions and it doesn't actually take too long to get used to the more manual system.
however i used to pass to offscreen players that i knew were there (cos of the radar, or cos of my innate footballer's sixth sense) and now that's much much more difficult - which is itself infuriating, because you just can't see enough of the pitch. i'm constantly wishing i could see more players on the screen at once. yes i have switched to the wide camera but even that's not quite enough (and the players are the size of peas on my 26" toshiba)
― progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

you mean the radar thing at the bottom? I do. I guess maybe not very effectively.
― progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 24 October 2010 23:56 (fifteen years ago)
it's vital for passing out of screen, really.
― cant believe you sb'd me for that (darraghmac), Sunday, 24 October 2010 23:59 (fifteen years ago)
i know that! but with the new much-more-manual-passing it's a lot harder to get the angle right using the radar

I do prefer the feel of PES 11 for single player, but FIFA 11v11 club mode is way more fun online (and surprisingly easy to get in lag free matches even out here).

this is hard! been playing on regular level for a couple days now, have two wins and a dozen losses. my teams aren't very good (Racing Montevideo, Copenhagen FC) so that may explain some frustration.
can anybody recommend a decent UEFA Champions League team, one that's not the best yet good enough to pull off an upset?
