best "pick up and play" games

this is the number one problem with video games reaching a wider audience imo - most of them require vast arcane hours of training just in order to be even minimally competent at them; in the early days, fun could be had within the first minute or so of play (frogger, space invaders, etc)

from which of today's new games can players reap satisfaction in just a few minutes?

Aren't video games already reaching a pretty wide audience right now? There are so many pick up and play casual type things - just look at the DS - I've seen people with those that I never would have imagined playing games ever. Also Guitar Hero machines.

Lumines is a good casual game. Or Puzzle Planet League.

excite truck is pretty casual in that you can teach an inebriated friend to play it pretty quickly but it's not exactly straight pick-up-and-play? I dunno. YMMV with that one

I was playing some Space Invaders (and Space Invaders II) recently. I think people forget how incredibly hard and punishing those games really are.

You have to know how to play FPSes to play Portal!

Maybe you meant Peggle. If so, I cosign.

Planet Puzzle League is deceptively casual - but to actually play the game "right", or in a not-confusingly-boring way (this is supposed to be fun???) you have to understand the timing and how the combos are done, moreso than even something like Puzzle Fighter. That said the DS is the best interface for it, and I really like the game, though I wish Nintendo had tried a bit harder making it.

Peggle and Guitar Hero, yay, though! Same with Warioware on the Wii. 5 second minigames that even tell you how to hold the remote every time, great party game.

I just started playing DTD today, I'm not doing very well. :(

I was hoping Sonic and the Secret Rings would be pick up and play BUT IT'S NOT. Far too much to think about.

Link's Crossbow Training is effective.

yeah, i said widER, though

that's a very good point about the DS, the PSP, etc - there's something about portables that encourages this kind of thing, i think we're seeing the same with tv and film - short stuff that's easy and quick to watch works well on these devices and to hell with the cinematography

picked up peggle demo yesterday. deceptively simple, electronic pachinko basically. but it means they can go to town on the bells and whistles and make it shiny.

there's a flash version of portal (http://portal.wecreatestuff.com/), which could be pick up and play. i found the real version fun in the first few minutes and then it sucked me in and fucked with my head.
