It's good I still have my ipod tooch b/c android games seem to suck. Anyone have recommendations? Everytime I look at the android market, its angry birds zzzzzzzzz, robot defense (ugliest tower defense game I have seen), and a version of solitaire that was on like windows 98. wtf!

never been a big rougelike/nethack fan. the only remotely fun game I have found on droid is live holdem poker.

i'm surprised at the lower amount of games for android, seeing as the sdk is free and all. have been looking into developing on it myself, all i need now is an android phone whaa

Have an iPhone and a Nexus 7. Been looking for any decent Android games but so far there just seems to be the same as those on iOS (although games like Tiny Thief, Galaxy on Fire 2 etc benefit greatly from the large screen real estate of the Nexus). Are there any Android exclusives worth checking out?
So far the only real benefit the Nexus has over iOS is I'm able to painlessly run Retroarch and so can play lots of old school SNES and DS games like Zelda and Professor Layton.

last month my parents downloaded a game from the google play store for my 7 yr old nephew to play on their tablet. this junk: batman and the flash hero run. he was playing it then after a few minutes came back to them panicky and upset. turns out he'd ended up on some screen of in-game purchases and couldn't get out, panicked, hit a button a few times and ended up buying six lots of 'gems' at £13.99 each.
my parents are pretty mad about it so i checked the game out on my own tablet and it's a real sly piece of shit. once you run out of lives it sends you to the 'buy gems' screen and there's no way out, no back button, even the 'return to tablet homescreen' button is disabled (on my tablet anyway). only thing you can do is buy stuff.
is there anything i can do to get a refund? my parents uninstalled the game immediately so those gems have never been used, however the fuck they even are used. was thinking of writing them a letter but the company 'gree inc' is based in japan so seems pointless. are there any uk watchdog services, or uk google i can complain to? i know this is unlikely, going off the number of 'my kid spent £10,000 on my iphone in 3 minutes' tabloid articles but figure it's worth a shot. this whole in-game purchases thing is some seriously underhand shit, designed to rip-off the non-computer savvy, surely can't go on much longer in its current form
― NI, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 16:58 (ten years ago)
sadly i see no signs of it ending anytime soon
― Nhex, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 18:06 (ten years ago)
can see the thing itself continuing but few more safeguards before sucking the money out of people's accounts. this batman was literally brush across one button and schlooop, £14 gone in an instant
― NI, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 18:32 (ten years ago)
i think it's worth reporting it to the place you got it from, get them to remove it at the very least. (also, was it a properly licenced batman product?)
also, i hear airplane mode is good for stopping this stuff.

http://www.cnet.com/news/google-to-pay-19m-settlement-in-ftc-in-app-purchase-suit/
"The Federal Trade Commission on Thursday said Google has agreed to pay $19 million to consumers to settle a case about children -- unbeknownst to their parents -- making purchases within programs on Google's mobile app store."
― koogs, Friday, 5 September 2014 08:30 (ten years ago)
I'd always ensure you change settings to require a password for in-app purchases whenever kids are using a device.

Monument Valley. 99p on amazon.co.uk at the moment and worth 2 hours of anyone's time.
Twisty Planets is kind of similar, paths in 3d space.
Gridrunner. never got this on computers but it's great on tablets. that is until you try to go to sleep and all you can see is the mass of bullets. downloadable here - http://minotaurproject.co.uk/Minotaur/donate.php

crossy road has a great look. gameplay gets repetitive though.

― koogs, Friday, 30 January 2015 21:26 (ten years ago)
bought MV, can't install because no disk space
why oh why must I have an 80% free SD card but be unable to install new software because the internal storage is nearly full, taken up 90% by Google apps which won't let me uninstall even though I never use them
(I uh may just be using this thing wrong)
anyway sorry for offtopic rant, will try to have some actual game type thoughts
fist-sized-voxels look of crossy road is nice, reminds me of Giant Boulder of Death, probably still the Android game I've been most hooked on (free katamari-ish roller, ads on the startup screen but I rarely saw 'em bcz rarely online; you can pay for upgrades but nothing you can't get through gameplay iirc and it doesn't badger you relentlessly)
― club mate martyr (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 30 January 2015 21:42 (ten years ago)
what are the other great great android games? been loving room & room 2 lately, as well as MV. anything else a must-play like those?

Fiz, where you manage a brewery is good if a bit slow. Also it's annoyingly twitchy in terms of markets, etc. which means you can suddenly be in a dead end after a lot of work which makes it very frustrating.
― hyggeligt, Sunday, 1 February 2015 08:56 (ten years ago)
Have just realised that Crossy Road is named that way because of flappy bird - one finger gameplay. Big fan of the graphic design of it, which gets better the more you unlock.
NOT SO KEEN on the way it gives you presents at timed intervals, 3 hours apart, as notifications if you're not actually playing and even if it's 3am.
― koogs, Sunday, 1 February 2015 11:04 (ten years ago)
Flow Free is pleasing in a non-frantic puzzle kind of way. joining dots in a grid with dots of the same colour without overlapping. 8 * 150 free screens, more if you pay.
i recommend airplane mode for all these btw. the one time i forgot it was a much more naggy experience.
― koogs, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 14:35 (ten years ago)
GBOD and The Room downloaded btw. thanks.
Actually jealous of Android for once - that current mobile Humble Bundle with the Cartoon Network games looks great.
― Nhex, Saturday, 14 February 2015 16:49 (ten years ago)
I bought Art Of Fighting on amazon, a lot of the SNK fighters on the store have complaints that they don't even work but this one had a positive review, so I took the chance. It's been downloading for many hours, whenever I go into the games section of kindle, I get thrown out of it after a few seconds. I deleted the game from my Amazon game/app list but it appears to still be loading in the games section and I still get thrown out of there after a few seconds.
What the fuck is going on? I realised a lot of the games on the store are unauthorised and dodgy but I've no idea if this would have happened with any games I downloaded.

i had 72/73 of the characters on crossy road and they go and release another 17... the new british characters are all insulting cliches. but it's fun to play as a phonebox.
(paid for the piggy bank in the end (although that doesn't count towards the 73))
