The last Metroid is in captivity. The galaxy is at peace.

abanana, Thursday, 10 January 2008 14:38 (seventeen years ago)

OG metroid

carne asada, Thursday, 10 January 2008 14:42 (seventeen years ago)

Voted for the only one I've finished. Only started two others though.

JimD, Thursday, 10 January 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

I've not played enough of these but I voted anyway.

Will M., Thursday, 10 January 2008 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

ooh

Jordan, Thursday, 10 January 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

i can't decide between fusion and zero mission, both of which i loved. never actually played super metroid, and metroid prime was alright and all but i got stuck on some boss and never got very far.

Jordan, Thursday, 10 January 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

Play Super Metroid now.

abanana, Thursday, 10 January 2008 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

Not voting since I never played Super Metroid either, which seems to be acknowledged as the best (though is this due to nostalgia, or that long drought between it and Metroid Prime?).

Nhex, Thursday, 10 January 2008 16:40 (seventeen years ago)

fusion is the only only one i've beaten. so fusion.

bell_labs, Thursday, 10 January 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

obv 1st one is best ever

jhøshea, Thursday, 10 January 2008 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

I've played all but the GameBoy ones, and as awesome as the Prime series is, nothing beats Super Metroid. And it's not just nostalgia, as I had barely ever played it until it was on the VC.

Garrett Martin, Thursday, 10 January 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

i wish super metroid was cheaper on ebay.

Jordan, Thursday, 10 January 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

how much is it? i should ebay my snes stuff

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 10 January 2008 20:10 (seventeen years ago)

super metroid is on the Wii VC for what, $8?

El Tomboto, Thursday, 10 January 2008 20:12 (seventeen years ago)

$20 cheapest

Jordan, Thursday, 10 January 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

i knew tom was just going to tell me to get a wii!

Jordan, Thursday, 10 January 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

yep, eight bucks on the VC, and you don't have to find a save coffin thing to save your progress.

I'm hoping they add Game Boy to the VC so I can finally play those Metroid games eventually.

Garrett Martin, Friday, 11 January 2008 21:23 (seventeen years ago)

Weren't they talking about gameboy downloads that you could play on your ds, or something like that?

This, I guess?

Many are called, but Super Metroid is chosen.

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 12 January 2008 10:07 (seventeen years ago)

i am tempted to vote for metroid because it is perfect and i have spent years obsessing over everything about it, the pristine soundtrack and sound design, the graphics, the passwords, the secret room hunts, the succinct poetry of the start screen - it's just fucking PERFECT. but if i'm honest, the game i had most fun playing from that list is metroid prime.

r1o natsume, Saturday, 12 January 2008 17:10 (seventeen years ago)

Needs a no Metroid is good option. Even thought the wii one is probably good.

CaptainLorax, Monday, 14 January 2008 03:11 (seventeen years ago)

OG Metroid is one of the greatest games ever made.

HI DERE, Monday, 14 January 2008 19:28 (seventeen years ago)

OLD SCHOOL RULES

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

cool. i'm glad other people voted for the DS ones, though.

btw i'm going to start playing super metroid next week. :>

Jordan, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

I started Super Metroid last night and it's amazing, although after looking up some stuff online it looks like I managed to get pretty far while missing half the gun upgrades and stuff.

Jordan, Monday, 21 January 2008 19:49 (seventeen years ago)

is there super metroid for GBA?

bell_labs, Monday, 21 January 2008 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

No, but Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission are exactly the same gameplay as SM, just different games. Some of my favorites ever A+++.

Jordan, Monday, 21 January 2008 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

ah ok i voted for fusion! <3<3<3

bell_labs, Monday, 21 January 2008 20:17 (seventeen years ago)

Har, I'm the one who voted for prime hunters. Although actually, if I could've, I'd have voted for metroid prime pinball, cos that's my real favourite.

JimD, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 00:59 (seventeen years ago)

I spent most of yesterday beating Super Metroid (after having to start over a few days before because my game got erased somehow, just like old times!) and it was everything I hoped it could be. What a great fucking game.

Jordan, Monday, 28 January 2008 15:37 (seventeen years ago)

Btw, my cat generally ignores the tv but was obsessed with Super Metroid. All getting in the way and trying to chase morph-ball Samus around.

Jordan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:13 (seventeen years ago)

six years pass...

I'm playing through Super Metroid right now. I played it when it came out but I had rented it and gotten stuck, and it's no fun getting stuck in these games. Now that I can look up the answer online, getting stuck for hours on end is avoidable. I actually prefer the linear-style Castlevania stuff over Metroidvania for that reason, though the unlockable open-world aspects are really cool and a great part of what makes it fun. That part where the green animals wall jump and you realize you could have wall jumped the entire time is awesome! (Tho in reality you couldn't wall jump in many places because the walls need to be pretty close together).

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 28 February 2014 03:05 (eleven years ago)

You can't top the minimalist title theme from the first NES game, though.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 28 February 2014 03:08 (eleven years ago)

i'd never thought about how epistemologically interesting the wall jumping was before

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Friday, 28 February 2014 08:13 (eleven years ago)

God I used to love Super Metroid. It really was a world of its own.

super then prime then O.G.

AIDS (Hungry4Ass), Saturday, 1 March 2014 14:44 (eleven years ago)

My favourite of the Prime series was Metroid Prime Pinball

continually topping myself (flamboyant goon tie included), Saturday, 1 March 2014 15:37 (eleven years ago)

The controls in Super Metroid are absolutely perfect, fine-tuned like a master mechanic fine-tuned a hot-rod. Wall jumping is difficult but not impossible, and when you pull one off, you feel like a million bucks. You really feel like you jumped up that long vertical tunnel because you DID, and it was a tricky little feat of acrobatic button inputs. If Star Wars is Space Opera then Super Metroid is Space Ballet.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 1 March 2014 15:47 (eleven years ago)

Super Metroid + Space Ritual is the ideal way to change things up

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 1 March 2014 19:48 (eleven years ago)

It is way better than Dark Side of the Oz, too.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 1 March 2014 19:50 (eleven years ago)

I love the fire area graphics the most, it's basically built out of NES Metroid tiles but w the SNES they can do color palette shifting, so it has a nice glowing effect that makes it look like everything is carved from burning coals.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 1 March 2014 19:51 (eleven years ago)

seven months pass...

There's like a whole aesthetic that could be wrought from the start of Super Metroid when Samus lands on Zebes and it's all bleak and foggy and ominous. I'd love to start a thread about music/films/art that inadvertently allude to this but I'm worried it might be a little too esoteric.

Shepard Toney Album (dog latin), Monday, 6 October 2014 12:08 (eleven years ago)

two years pass...

Just started playing Super Metroid on a SNES emulator and I'm having a blast. The atmosphere alone is GOAT.

Gonna take adam's advice on SM + Hawkwind. Also weed.

barbarian radge (NotEnough), Thursday, 11 May 2017 13:17 (eight years ago)

Which emulator?
I've only played the OG one

calstars, Thursday, 11 May 2017 14:09 (eight years ago)

Super Metroid is amazing.

Shat Parp (dog latin), Thursday, 11 May 2017 14:20 (eight years ago)

Can anyone recommend a snes emulator for mac? Or are they generally better on pc?

calstars, Thursday, 11 May 2017 14:49 (eight years ago)

I'm using snes9x for Win10, looks great with scanlines + bilinear filtering turned on. Can't help for mac, sorry

barbarian radge (NotEnough), Thursday, 11 May 2017 15:06 (eight years ago)

OpenEmu looks promising, will try that one

calstars, Thursday, 11 May 2017 15:19 (eight years ago)

i can vouch for openemu on mac

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Thursday, 11 May 2017 20:47 (eight years ago)

super metroid is the best

ciderpress, Thursday, 11 May 2017 21:12 (eight years ago)

the 3 great metroid games imo are super metroid, zero mission, and the first metroid prime

ciderpress, Thursday, 11 May 2017 21:14 (eight years ago)

first metroid prime is sublime

PRESIDENT STEAMPUNK J. BRAINSTEM (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 11 May 2017 21:19 (eight years ago)

i loved the first NES Metroid so much as a kid. can't beat that atmosphere. Metroid Prime i always avoided until last year cos 3D but it turned out to be surprisingly really good and faithful to the series. haven't played Zero or the other GBA games.

definitely check out Another Metroid 2 Remake (AM2R). it is a fan game but it is the best fangame i have ever played. it is a remake of the Gameboy Metroid 2 (which always suffered from the tiny screen) but with Super Metroid graphics/gameplay.

||||||||, Friday, 14 November 2025 14:27 (one month ago)

IDK I think the open-world Samus on a motorcycle stuff looks cool, albeit not what I come to Metroid for (exploration of an oppressive and wonder-ful megalabyrinth)

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Friday, 14 November 2025 14:43 (one month ago)

def looks better in the hands on previews - nintendo overview trailer made it look a little stiff and empty

||||||||, Friday, 14 November 2025 15:06 (one month ago)

Word. Hoping this performs OK on OG Switch, I'm not buying a Switch 2 until there is a new mainline Zelda or an OLED version, whichever comes first

lag∞n, Friday, 14 November 2025 22:43 (one month ago)

completely bonkers poll results

prime 4 looks great except for the one annoying character who hopefully won't be too prominent

ufo, Monday, 24 November 2025 12:08 (one month ago)

i've been playing through prime remastered and it mostly holds up very well, although it probably would be nice if there was some sort of fast travel lol. i guess i can understand the thinking behind putting the desert motorbike hub area in prime 4 a bit more now even if it's a strange move.

the good metroid games are as follows:
prime
dread
super
prime 2
zero mission
prime 3

ufo, Monday, 24 November 2025 12:37 (one month ago)

Fusion?

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Monday, 24 November 2025 14:04 (one month ago)

i didn't like it much. it has very little real exploration until the very end of the game as you're just railroaded from objective to objective, made super metroid's clunky controls worse due to the limitations of the gba, and has an increased focus on combat

ufo, Tuesday, 25 November 2025 10:15 (one month ago)

I fully agree. No idea why people like that one.

adam t (dat), Tuesday, 25 November 2025 10:49 (one month ago)

I think Fusion was lot of people's first Metroid so there's a degree of nostalgia. I don't think it's bad it's just not top 5

My favourite is the original Prime and it's not terribly close. It took me a good while to get into it at first but once it clicked it was just a magical experience

treefell, Tuesday, 25 November 2025 12:29 (one month ago)

Fusion has a cool idea with the creepy Samus doppelganger, and it has a great art style, but I couldn't get into it either. Way too linear for sure. My faves are Super and Prime. I need to revisit Dread, which I recall enjoying well enough but I never finished it.

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Tuesday, 25 November 2025 14:34 (one month ago)

Super Metroid is my favorite - I played it for the first time only a couple years ago. Amazing atmosphere.

c u (crüt), Tuesday, 25 November 2025 14:38 (one month ago)

I have fond memories of Fusion and Zero Mission, but yeah that was peak GBA for me, and I hadn't properly played Super Metroid, just the original. Actually, I'm not sure if I ever have played SM?

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 November 2025 17:00 (one month ago)

Oh I forgot about the doppelganger in Fusion -- a rare non-stealth game where the stealth sections worked.

my favorites would be
Super Metroid
Zero Mission
Prime 1
Dread
Samus Returns

never played prime 3!

adam t (dat), Tuesday, 25 November 2025 17:22 (one month ago)

I’ve probably logged more hours into Prime Pinball than any of these

Prime Hunters I remember as being actively bad— cool design but terrible handfeel

Super Metroid is the only game that married the unique coldness of the OG with spectacular gameplay and everything else, 100%’ing felt better than anything— def a 10/10 game

by the clicking of her thumbs, something canine (flamboyant goon tie included), Tuesday, 25 November 2025 18:57 (one month ago)

not sure I’ve played more than 30 mins of any of them. in for MP4 day 1 though

||||||||, Tuesday, 25 November 2025 19:02 (one month ago)

maybe I could finish SM before it releases

||||||||, Tuesday, 25 November 2025 19:03 (one month ago)

original metroid is very beautiful and spooky

lag∞n, Tuesday, 25 November 2025 19:35 (one month ago)

agree

new metroids should go back to having a total black BG

z_tbd, Tuesday, 25 November 2025 20:10 (one month ago)

Part of Original Metroid's appeal for me was the arbitrary way certain power-ups were hidden; that energy tank in the first corridor that was impossible to jump to, me and my gaming friend age 10 just looking at it like "wtf". The game itself had this scrappy, unfinished quality to its design that contributed to the mood of it all. Even the title theme felt like a sketch.

Super Metroid kept it going super well. Discovering that bizarre statue of the four bosses, finding no way of interacting with it, just these four evil dudes in quiet repose. Chozo statues alternately disintegrating once their offer was acquired, or springing to life to attack. Wow what a great game. It seemed to me too to effectively be a "remake" of Original Metroid, but a welcome remake

||||||||, Tuesday, 2 December 2025 15:27 (three weeks ago)

Super Metroid was the first game I remember playing that gave off that now common but uncanny feeling of loneliness.

Now read it backwards. (dog latin), Tuesday, 2 December 2025 15:33 (three weeks ago)

Like, you know the whole vibe of a Dark Souls game where you're almost entirely alone in a hostile world that seems indifferent to your existence

Now read it backwards. (dog latin), Tuesday, 2 December 2025 15:37 (three weeks ago)

ahh apparently the other characters hang out in the hub area and aren't with you most of the time, that sounds way more sensible

ciderpress, Wednesday, 3 December 2025 02:02 (three weeks ago)

i got prime 4 early and it's just fine

very much has the basics down, plays very well, is clearly the best looking game nintendo's ever put out, but all the strange design decisions from the trailers are present and just as strange in context, and the writing is incredibly perfunctory even by video game standards. structurally it seems most comparable to metroid prime 2, except with a big empty desert in the middle instead of a regular hub level, and none of the areas so far are as elaborate as the prime 2 areas

ufo, Wednesday, 3 December 2025 14:24 (three weeks ago)

did any intel ever leak on the bandai namco version

||||||||, Wednesday, 3 December 2025 16:16 (three weeks ago)

nope nothing. it might never have even reached the prototype stage for all we know

ciderpress, Wednesday, 3 December 2025 19:48 (three weeks ago)

i've barely touched any video games since my teens but still have strong memories of the o.g. metroid - that shit was icy.

map, Wednesday, 3 December 2025 20:19 (three weeks ago)

xp the weirdest part which i just learned is that nintendo just bought bandai namco singapore which was the team that were making that failed prime 4. so it can't have been due to incompetence or anything too displeasing

ciderpress, Friday, 5 December 2025 18:17 (three weeks ago)

anyway i will at least replay 1 and 2 and try to finish them this time before i touch 4

ciderpress, Friday, 5 December 2025 18:19 (three weeks ago)

i finished prime 4 and it gets weaker as it goes along, ends up clearly the worst prime game, thoroughly mediocre. a real shame.
