DC Universe Online

As a PS+ nerd, I apparently get early access to this in beta but it's what looks like a 15 gig download which is going as we speak.
Thus far, the game is about an hour of downloading and a picture of lex luthor in a space station pointing at the earth while supes, ww and bats say "yep, that's the earth alright"
I'll report back.

Okay, it finally loads and there's a five minute CGI movie that seems like it's taken from some Geoff Johns script or other. Lex and the villains kill all the heroes then Brainiac comes and enslaves the human race, Lex survives and comes back in time to warn the heroes and also brings a gazillion space robot doohickeys that will infect the human populace with SUPERPOWERS so we can defend ourselves when brainiac comes.
It looked great but blah blah blah. THEN! character creation, very granular, great interface, loads of customizable fun. I spent a half hour making a guy who has acrobatic powers from doohickeys he creates and trains himself to fight with a bo staff and do acrobatics. He's got a skull mask, a paramilitary backpack and a polo sweater vest with a skull on it. Slacks, dress shoes, formal gloves. Calls himself skully d. Then BANG Skully is on a ship in what's clearly a tutorial, killing bad guys, climbing on walls, doing backflips, levelling, getting POWER POINTS and generally being unkillable. Then (terrible looking) Superman shows up and wastes a shitton of guys then Oracle tells you to teleport to earth and BANG you're in a gotham police station with 500 other losers called "THE FRAGMENT" and "COOLX" and so forth, flying and speeding and teleporting in various capes and tights. And I couldn't figure out how to save. So I turned it off. But I will go back!

Any updated impressions, forks?

Haven't gone back to it yet; game dev ate my life. Planning on playing with it over the holiday break. BTW, discovered you don't need to save as it's a persistent world. Now I need to find about four persistent hours to string together to see how this works.

Cool. I'm just curious, as I'm debating whether this will be the first MMO I play or not.

i tried to play last night and it said "GREAT! Now wait four hours while we download four gigs of patch."
Left it running all night to DL, will try again tonight.

having never played an mmorpg, the key opiates are fresh and very addictive for me. I think i'm going to reroll a third character and actually know what i want this time as opposed to making it up as i go along.

okay, that's two full days of play in a row. I think i better stop now, because i could absolutely see this being the only thing i do with my life in 2011

Broke down and picked this up today. After the 100 hour install I look forward to playing my first MMO.

Played a few hours yesterday and I'm having a blast. I think I'm getting a whiff of that addictive narcotic forks mentioned above; I stopped because I had to eat, not because I wanted to. Just one more mission, one more encounter, one more bit of gear -- two more hours down the tube.

Got online with a friend today and we ran around trying not to get mauled. Really great fun - even when you get absolutely clattered the penalty is just a respawn so it doesn't seem quite as vicious.

Loving it.

Would love for someone to join me. It's a hoot.

I do understand what forks said about worrying about it taking over his gaming time - I've played a game or two of PES but otherwise I've just been putting hour after hour into this.

It doesn't feel as much of a grind as killing rats or whatever. Maybe I'm being ganked to much to notice it.
