Your game save woes.

I just booted up Super Mario World for finish off my near 100% game, only to find:

Save A: EMPTY
Save B: EMPTY
Save C: EMPTY.

I'm at a loss. Is this a good excuse to play the game through again, or should I be slamming the cartridge in a car door?

Tell me about some of the times you've been robbed by memory bandits, to make my loss seem less devastating.

non nintendo memory carts that use encryption and end up corrupting the ENTIRE cart and you have to reformat losing all saved games on all games ever. DUD

The worst was old adventure games that would allow you to get to point where the game was unwinnable (e.g. you didn't pick up the ham before you went to magic island and now there's no way back SORRY) and then would allow you to save over your progress and completely screw yourself.

Lucasarts was totally superior to Sierra in this regard.

Laura H. (laurah), Sunday, 25 September 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

save states can still fuck up though, mainly due to human error, like the time i spent hours levelling up in the fan translation of ff3j on nesticle and pressed F7 to load instead of F3 to save.

rio natsume, Sunday, 25 September 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Haha, the amount of times I've dropped down a hole or been too impatient to let the enemy fill me with bullets and hit the load button, only to see the worlds "saving" appear on my screen.

melton mowbray (adr), Sunday, 25 September 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

i'm one of those irritating bastards who'd insist that the vectrex emulators only simulate the display, so are only partial emulators.

four months pass...
I just answered "no" to my 100th "try again?" offer on Viewtiful Joe, because it's about time I got some kip, only to sleepily answer "no" again to "do you want to save?"

Wahey!

Also, I'm using a third pastry memory card with the Gamecube and every now and then when I switch on I get "memory card corrupted, do you want to format?" to which I say "god, no."
After a reset, everything's back the way it should be and I continue my game. Is this normal?

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 2 February 2006 03:09 (twenty years ago)

It's normal as far as 3rd party memory cards go, yeah. Nobody should ever trust non-official memory cards. Even saving spectrum games onto C90s was more reliable. They're totally not worth the couple of quid they save you.

(and yes, I've also accidentally said no to "do you want to save?" many many times. It's a horrible hollow "oh god.........I'm the stupidest thing ever" feeling that you get afterwards).

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 2 February 2006 03:43 (twenty years ago)

third pastry memory card

Sounds delish!

c(''c) (Leee), Thursday, 2 February 2006 04:44 (twenty years ago)

The obvious answer is being burgled.

"They've taken all the PSX games!"
"nooooooo"
"And the PSX!"
"nooooooo"
"With the memory cards still in it"
"HULK SMASH!"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 2 February 2006 07:11 (twenty years ago)

wtf is with Battlefront 2 save system, it's like it asks you if you want to save a game every five minutes. so bad.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 2 February 2006 11:11 (twenty years ago)

I'm immensely worried that the savegame I have on FFT right now, where I have no other options from my save state but to go into battle with Wiegraf man-to-man, is a lost cause and I may have a lot of grinding and annoying bullshit to put up with to get back there in a more appropriate state to beat his uppity, lightning-stabbing face in. SAVE MULTIPLES, PEOPLE. NEVER HAVE LESS THAN THREE STATES WITHIN AN HOUR OR LEVEL OF EACH OTHER. I'm an idiot for not doing so.

It reminds me of a couple of incidents where I had 1 RAM freeze state in an emulated game and overwrote it with a situation which later revealed itself to be insoluble; I think this is why I quit so close to the end of Zelda LTTP on my Mac 8500 in the college radio days. Stuck on a platform somewhere with no magic to light fires? Does that sound right?

The first instance I can remember was in Space Quest on the Apple II! I saved my game immediately as I arrived in a corridor with an alien at the other end of it, so that if I wasn't quick enough on the draw to kill him I could try again. Trouble was by pressing the save key instead of drawing and shooting right away I had doomed myself to lose the duel every time. So we reloaded nearly a dozen times in a row only to watch Roger be pathetically executed, no matter how frantically we drumrolled the keys.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 2 February 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

there's something so tragic about those doomed save games

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 2 February 2006 17:21 (twenty years ago)

Fire Emblem is pretty creative the way they get around that for you.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 2 February 2006 17:35 (twenty years ago)

yeah! although i always end up turning off my DS when a character i like dies!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 2 February 2006 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Fuck you, Eternal Darkness, for not reminding me to save, only for me to realise about two hours down the line when my character's about to die.

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 03:20 (twenty years ago)

It did turn out, btw, that I did not have enough Chemist JP on my Ramza (Shabazz) to have him learn Auto-Potion for the duel with Wiegraf. I had to go back to the fight in the Orbonne Book Depository and win that shit all over again (easier this time though, experience DOES pay off) and am stuck grinding around through random encounters to get back there.

Asinine. I hate it when problems only have one solution.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 14 February 2006 14:53 (twenty years ago)

i believe you can also use the lancer (or dragoon? whatever) jump command to beat him.

but he's still the toughest required boss in any FF.

älänbänänä (alanbanana), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that I never used auto-potion to beat him, since I don't think I ever had anybody learn auto-potion.

I think I did need the jump though, and had the exact same problem of saving right before, so I had to go go back to an earlier save.

I just got Crystalis for NES for the girlfriend and the battery still works

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 18:50 (twenty years ago)

OK fine, I hate it when problems only have two solutions.
WTF would anybody want to make Ramza a Lancer?

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 15 February 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

It happened when I was about eight. My first copy of Super Mario RPG erased all the save files every time you ejected it. I was about halfway through the game (further than I'd ever gotten in one non-erased session) when my older brother announced he was going to play Donkey Kong Country. I shouted, "NO NO NO NO NO" and ran after him. I came into the room to see my copy of Mario RPG popping out of the SNES. I screamed for about five seconds before I began crying and attempting to rip my brother's throat out.

The good thing that came out of it was that my mom exchanged my copy of Mario RPG for a new, non-broken copy.

oh yah, ok, so the social worker came along and is taking away my three kids in the Sims2, so i exit without saving and reload cos i know that it's just to do with those poor grades that one of the twins is getting because he's up all night playing in the puddle in the bathroom and ingoring his homework, and i want to keep hold of the twins, since it's the first time in my Sims playing history i've got a pair, and so i gave them awesome names to commemorate it (Paula & Annahilator), but when i reload the game, it turns out i saved the previous day, so no matter what i do, that evil old boot is still gonna come and take all three away since Sims2 doesn't use saved game slots, just a single save file for each lot.

fucking bitch.
