i dunno if this is a challop exactly but the old sonic the hedgehog games are built from a fundamentally poor game design where the player is encouraged to play sub-optimally, at least in terms of avoiding death, because the fun in the game is going fast and going fast makes it harder to avoid obstacles in a 2D level in which you can't see very far ahead of you. ironically, those 3D 3rd person sonic games fixed this problem but as far as i can tell no one liked them.

i feel like "just learn the maps" is more reasonable with multiplayer games (esp shooters) than w/SP, since there's the expectation that you'll be replaying a lot of the same map content anyway... but l4d is deffo a weird case where prizing efficiency too much can be a fun-killer
― ℳℴℯ ❤\(◕‿◕✿ (Princess TamTam), Thursday, 31 March 2011 14:58 (fourteen years ago)
videogames should not require you to 'learn the maps'
Games don't require you to learn the maps. Other players who have already learnt the maps and are thus kicking your arse, they require you to learn the maps.

If we're still talking GoldenEye: it was the ONLY FPS I played, both for reasons of preference and HEALTH. I'm talking real-life health, because FPSes give me fierce motion sickness (now also include 3D games -- I had to stop playing Arkham Asylum too!), and although I felt queasy playing GE in single player, I *never* had a problem with the multiplayer. Moreover, the controls just felt so intuitive (surely my many hours of playing helped train me to its gameplay) in a way that literally no other FPS (ok, maybe Perfect Dark, but that's the same engine) managed, and so I just couldn't play e.g. CS at all.
the desperate, impossible task of finding your friends in the Maze of Polygonal Grayness so that you can shoot each other maybe once before the time limit expires?
Were you one of those noobs who played with radar on, or who complained that their opponents were looking at their screen to figure out where they were?
― farting in the shower - C/D (Leee), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 03:49 (fourteen years ago)
I remember the lolz we had when guys started moving around while pressed up as close to the walls just so the rest of us couldn't cheat by looking at their screens.
― farting in the shower - C/D (Leee), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 03:50 (fourteen years ago)
Again: we were TRYING to find each other! I would stand still, say "OK, come kill me, look at my screen! I'm in like...this room! It's gray!" And time would run out. Again, DOOM and Duke 3D may have spoiled me on the idea of lively, interesting, interactive and memorable environments in an FPS, so perhaps I was not well-primed to experience the GoldenEye "magic."
― Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 04:16 (fourteen years ago)
And radars were on by default, weren't they? So your friends didn't know how radars work? I'm still not really seeing how this situation came about. Maybe they just didn't *want* to find you.
― JimD, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 09:09 (fourteen years ago)
Ugh, this is hard to explain. Nevermind. Suffice to say it is a problem I have never had in any other FPS.

― Gravel Puzzleworth, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 19:07 (fourteen years ago)
man i did not see this thread. wind waker is the best zelda, final fantasy 7 sucks, diablo was more fun than diablo 2 (can't really back this one up), the coolest computer RPG ever was Betrayal at Krondor, recent bethesda games are NOT BAD ACTUALLY (this is a challop in some circles).
i loved goldeneye and we basically lived on it in middle school but i understand and sympathize with every complaint ever made about it, and if you knew what it felt like to play a computer FPS it was TOTALLY RIDICULOUS trying to play one with a joystick where you had to stand still just to aim. also perfect dark was probably an improvement, even if the N64 could barely run it.
i think someone here linked to a blog post they wrote in another thread about mario64 and how mario games at least up thru that one were built around the player (yourself) increasing in ability over the course of the game.
this was me i think. i like this game a LOT.

Diablo 2 was kinda pre-WoW focus-grouped addiction simulator.
this is totally how i feel too, but i don't know if this is because of what it became because it lined up with the starcraft-driven explosion of battle.net and was therefore ready to be Played Constantly (i only ever played the first one at LAN parties), or because of something that was actually wrong with it. from a distance it looks like a longer diablo with better rain effects.
― difficult listening hour, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 20:21 (fourteen years ago)
never understood the appeal of diablo in the slightest
― goole, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 20:21 (fourteen years ago)
diablo was fun because it took absolutely no thought at all, like none, like seriously NONE beyond "keep an eye on your health meter so you can drink a potion with the 1 key", and you could play it with friends on rainy saturdays and make sandwiches and talk about senior girls, and still have something to get fucking furious at each other about when someone stood in a doorway and the Rogue accidentally shot them.

I finally started playing Oblivion again. I've documented my problems with the leveling system in other threads and obviously the PC version is superior because the modding community is amazing. My computer is not.
My gaming challops is that some games force me to play all OCD-like. This isn't so bad when I'm just hanging back and leveling, BECAUSE I CAN (and therefore must make my character more badass), but sometimes it's too much. "Efficient leveling" in Oblivion is too much. Looking for heart containers in Zelda ain't so bad. Collecting all the puzzle pieces and letters in KONG for Donkey Kong Wii actually made the game last longer. It's an amazing game so I appreciate that it lasts longer. Having my character becoming too powerful and too much of a badass in Oblivion and Fallout 3 was a downer. It's not as fun to play when everything dies so quickly. But I can't NOT make my character a badass in an RPG.. I don't have it in me to underplay any game.
Fortunately I think I've found a way to enjoy Oblivion (more) this time around. After 20 or so levels of "efficent leveling" I'm just gonna stop leveling all together. But man, if I had a gaming PC, mods would fix all my main problems with Oblivion right off the bat.
