i didn't know any of them past 3 existed, so kudos to their marketing ppl

gff, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 21:41 (seventeen years ago)

shaolin monks was fucking awesome

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 21:46 (seventeen years ago)

imo it was MK4 although MK3 is very close. MK1 was dope, MK2 was also dope. the rest... well, i liked the post-apocalypse thing, but who gives a fuck about a kurt stryker

xp haha gff

Will M., Tuesday, 11 March 2008 21:47 (seventeen years ago)

(The one where they added a fat cop)

so much truth here

HI DERE, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

I enjoyed I and II but they were minor pleasures compared to SFII etc. because the gameplay nuance just wasn't there. Never played anything after III.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

MKII was the SHIT, that game was so fucking awesome (Kitiara TROO WUV 4EVA)

HI DERE, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 22:06 (seventeen years ago)

i hear that, polyphonic re: street fighter beating it, but i have to admit a guilty pleasure of mine is keeping up on mortal kombat's COMPLETELY FUCKING LUDICROUS storylines. WAY more entertaining than "yet another robot cyborg from shadaloo." Seriously, each MK character's wiki page is, like, 5 pages long. its AWESOME.

Will M., Tuesday, 11 March 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)

Also whose wiki articles are in the running for the dryest shit on wikipedia to hilarious effect. this is from reptile's page...

RECURRING FATALITIES
# Tasty Meal: Reptile takes off his mask, revealing a reptilian face. He then opens his mouth and stretches out his long tongue, sticking it to his victim's head, then quickly retracts it, ripping off the head and eating it. Reptile then rubs his stomach, giving a satisfied "Mmmm..." noise. In Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Reptile also eats his opponent's abdomen and legs after eating their head, and does not rub his stomach. (MKII, UMK3, MKT, MK:SM)
# Hidden Chop: Reptile turns invisible, then rips or cuts off his opponent's torso before reappearing. How this is done is not precisely explained. (MKII, MK:SM)

Seriously one-two punch of LOLs there.

Will M., Tuesday, 11 March 2008 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

i don't think i played any of them after II, so that must mean 3 is the answer.

Jordan, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

2 was so the best

nickalicious, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 23:42 (seventeen years ago)

3 had dial-a-kombos and that stupid run button and half-assed fatalities. I stopped playing there.

abanana, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

fighting games with multiple palette swap characters are lame

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

MK3 changed it all over to dial-a-combos, which weren't nearly as satisfying. Also the character design got even worse, somehow.

wau so thorougly pwned

HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 03:58 (seventeen years ago)

3. 2 was decent. 3 was like "Why do all the characters STILL have all the same moves and physical strength?"

Z S, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 05:43 (seventeen years ago)

Definitely 3, when they started introducing the Killer Instinct-style dial-a-combo bullshit. Also the worst character designs of the entire series. Everyone looked like hair-metal video extras or American Gladiators.

latebloomer, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 06:18 (seventeen years ago)

MK II is perfection. Not as deep as Street Fighter but it had great graphics and sound for the time, smooth-as-Billy Dee control and awesome fatalities.

latebloomer, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 06:23 (seventeen years ago)

and also it had motherfucking Baraka

http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Galaxy/2153/images/t_baraka.gif

latebloomer, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 06:25 (seventeen years ago)

I think the Mortal Kombat movie is still probably the closest game-to-film adaptation yet.

latebloomer, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 06:26 (seventeen years ago)

I think MK II was one of the only games I saw people actually LINING UP to play

latebloomer, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 06:30 (seventeen years ago)

do arcades exist anymore at all?

latebloomer, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 06:31 (seventeen years ago)

was this game always 'realistic' graphics, or did that come later?

Ste, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 10:13 (seventeen years ago)

From the beginning it was that weird sprites-based-on-photos style that I guess started with Pit Fighter, but that must have come to an end with the first (shitty) 3-D one.

The first bad MK game IMO was the infuriating 2D-3D Sub Zero platformer.

antexit, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

MKII definitely is up there in terms of "introducing awesome new characters in a sequel"; I think the only other games that compete with it are Darkstalkers 2 and Viruta Fighter 2 (SF2 blows all of them away, of course).

HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

I think MK 3 looked really silly next to all those 3D fighters coming out at the same time.

latebloomer, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

WAIT WAIT so all the ones past 3 are arcade?

what the fuck, am i supposed to hang out at airports or something??

gff, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

I think the Mortal Kombat movie is still probably the closest game-to-film adaptation yet.

IN MK3 YOU COULD UPPERCUT PEOPLE UP ONTO OTHER LEVELS HOW COOL WAS THAT?????????????????????????????????????????

DG, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

all the ones past 3 came out on consoles... 4, 5, 6, 7 all on PS2 as far as i remember! maybe 4 was on ps1 but i don't think so? i can't remember

Will M., Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:19 (seventeen years ago)

SF2 hardly counts as a sequel imo, the first "street fighter" was so weird and different

Will M., Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:21 (seventeen years ago)

do arcades exist anymore at all?

-- latebloomer, Wednesday, March 12, 2008 6:31 AM (8 hours ago)

good question. i know there's one up the top of the trocadero because fatnick and i went on a quest to play outrun 2 there

DG, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:23 (seventeen years ago)

it all went downhill when my local corner shop got rid of its SF2 machine

DG, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:23 (seventeen years ago)

there's a couple in montreal, one of which i went to and had my ass handed to me a couple of times.

it's sad because the arcade system is pretty awesome... i get to play on an arcade stick without needing to build it myself and/or pay 200 bucks, all while standing at a cabinet that i don't have to put somewhere in my house and plathe best possible version of a fighting game!

Will M., Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

but MK3 loses points for switching to arabic # system

Will M., Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:30 (seventeen years ago)

DG, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)

BTW I foget who linked the "lame" MK3 fatalities but that was the last Mortal Kombat that I thought had AMAZING fatalities! i mean some of the UMK3 ones are uninspired (especially lame-o ermac), but some of the actual MK3 ones, priceless. i find it weird that they had to censor out sub-zero-classic's head/spine rip fatality (due ot the controversy it caused in MK1) but some of the ones they left in are WAY creepier/more brutal, ie. stretching a dude's mouth out and pulling their skeleton out through it, leaving a pile of skin?!?! what the fuck?!?! de-spine-i-tation seems tame in comparison!!!

Will M., Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

Will, how long have you been in MTL? It used to be an arcade PARADISE. There were six great ones on St. Catherine that I can remember. Now it's just the one, I think, on the north side by Drummond that has all those weird horseracing games and stuff.

antexit, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

i used to be able to play HARD DRIVIN' at the dolphin in romford :(

DG, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

i've only been here for like two years. i missed the golden age for sure. but then again i've never really looked for places, an old coworker brought me there once...

Will M., Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

which MK had the Afghani guy who could drop through the bottom of the screen? that's the last one I played. it was fun. yep!

Garrett Martin, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 17:39 (seventeen years ago)

Afghani guy?! i have no idea what you mean! was it 3d polygons?

Will M., Wednesday, 12 March 2008 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

Also wasn't this one of Kano's powers?

HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 18:45 (seventeen years ago)

apparently his name was Kabal. and apparently he wasn't necessarily Afghani, but from a dusty land, and perhaps even a desert. maybe he was Bedouin?

Garrett Martin, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 18:55 (seventeen years ago)

Couldn't one of the robots in 3 drop through the floor too? forward forward lowkick or something?

antexit, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 18:58 (seventeen years ago)

Arcades died when home systems were able to meet and more or less surpass cabinet quality graphics/sound/design.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

Now, the only stuff that works to keep arcades alive are "event" games, like where you go skiing... for realz! Dance Dance/Beatmania used to keep it alive, but now that people have shown a wii/guitarhero willingness to buy peripherals, that well is mostly dry too. It's down to kiddie bullshit (whackamole, skee ball, treasure claw) and retro stylee arcades to carry the torch.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:06 (seventeen years ago)

the Shaolin Monks game was really good, especially if you loved MK2 like I did; just nonstop action, Die Hard Arcade style

Definitely MK3. On top of having a fat cop and losing the cool ninjas in favor of dumb robots, they toned down the oriental flavor massively. The coolest thing about MK was that it was the closest to a Big Trouble in Little China fighting came you could get. MK3 just had no style.

The background were sometimes cool though. I think Ultimate MK3 was a step back in the right direction. But yeah, the cop thing really seals the deal.

Also, those fatalities, you can tell they really just didn't give a shit in MK3, reusing the same explosions-of-blood and exploding-guts animations over and over again.

MK11 at its core, has gone right!
The abominable, tedious unlock grind and always online games-as-a-service is godawful though.
I feel you could replace the term "MK11" here with so many games in 2019.
Female characters ARE a lot better in this one, though credit due to MKX for starting their trend of actually designing them decently

Still, it's MK - totally worth it for the goofy single player experience even if you can't/don't want to play with others. They've been a lot better than Capcom in at least delivering that. (Though I hate that so much is gated behind the online Towers. And the AI battles are such a waste of time as much as they were in Injustice 2.)

not just that slavery is bad, but that a storyline where time travel stops slavery from ever happening somehow promotes ‘white genocide’
wait what? was this even brought up in the game?

2-3 really nicely staged and executed scenes
2-3 performances with enough charisma to carry the terrible dialog (though sadly not the lead guy who is basically one of derek zoolander's model friends enlisted to act)
3-4 moments that will make you go yesssssss if you have any affection at all for the games
1 very funny, subtle-enough callback to the gameplay of the first couple editions that should make you smile
