Some stragglers I decided against including:
Golden Sun
Mario Kart Super Circuit
Serious Sam: The First Encounter
Sonic Adventure 2

Wow, that is a tough selection. I loved MGS2, Pikmin and GTA3. Circle of the Moon and Frequency were good, as were Max Payne and Super Monkey Ball. Haven't even played the first Advance Wars, FFX, Halo or DMC, let along the vaunted Ico and Silent Hill 2!

Nhex, Saturday, 2 July 2011 21:37 (thirteen years ago)

i have played almost all of these games...

Lamp, Saturday, 2 July 2011 21:40 (thirteen years ago)

As easy as it was to pick up and play multiplayer Smash Bros Melee, I enjoyed Twisted Metal: Black's multiplayer even more. Also worth noting that the original Monkey Ball hanglider-target multiplayer was awesome and hasn't been improved upon since (unfortunately).

Muttley vs. Mumbly (CaptainLorax), Saturday, 2 July 2011 21:41 (thirteen years ago)

Tony Hawk 3!

Jeff, Saturday, 2 July 2011 21:43 (thirteen years ago)

advance wars was one of the best handheld war games and really influential, but i think there are better versions than this one
civ 3 is still imo the best iteration in that series but it needs the expansions to be playable
luigi's mansion has fantastic gameplay & is p original and exciting, def in contention for my vote
mgs2 - havent played this in forever, kinda soured on the mg franchise but this probably wouldve been my vote in 01
also have a nostalgic love for onimusha but i cant really explain why i thought it was so good (i used to have a tshirt i got for preordering this. & wore it)
pikmin is ooookay kinda prefigures the whole iphone games thing i guess?
silent hill 2 fucking owns
the popularity of zone of the enders totally mystifies me

would probably include the gba golden sun in my year end top ten. would 100% include klonoa 2 (amazing looking weirdo platformer), virtua tennis 2k2 and capcom vs snk 2. i doubt red faction is a good as i remember it but i spent a fair bit of time on that in 2001 as well.

Lamp, Saturday, 2 July 2011 21:59 (thirteen years ago)

GTA3 hasn't aged that well but I really adored it when I was playing it. I'm guessing Ico will win?

polyphonic, Sunday, 3 July 2011 00:43 (thirteen years ago)

civ3, but holy shit what a year.

Mordy, Sunday, 3 July 2011 01:28 (thirteen years ago)

I voted for Silent Hill 2, but Advance Wars and MGS2 were also serious contenders.

little mushroom person (abanana), Sunday, 3 July 2011 02:22 (thirteen years ago)

not to be some hypercritical asshole, but i don't understand why you wouldn't use the max number of poll options! why not include as many games as you can?

Ayatollah Colm Meaney (Princess TamTam), Sunday, 3 July 2011 04:29 (thirteen years ago)

i certainly would've voted for Tribes 2 had it been an option

Ayatollah Colm Meaney (Princess TamTam), Sunday, 3 July 2011 04:29 (thirteen years ago)

sometimes having fewer options can help focus the discussion on the handful of games that ppl are really interested in talking about. i regret being too selective w/ the 88 poll but for the ones where i did 49 + other there were still only a handful of games receiving votes & all it seemed to do was add a bunch of 0 results and maybe make the discussion less focused

Lamp, Sunday, 3 July 2011 04:34 (thirteen years ago)

in 2001, right after graduating from high school, i took a giant cross-country road trip with my best friend to see another friend in LA. we smoked missouri dirt weed the entire time, and laughed until it hurt all the way there. 2 days later, we arrived. my LA friend had to work the whole time, and so we ended up smoking (new to us) "LA" weed for a 3 days straight, rolling around the carpet like stupid dogs and beating Super Monkey Ball in the meantime. i never played the game before or since, and it's still one of my favorite games ever.

i guess this gets at the heart of my resentment, which is that it *forces* the focus in a direction im not interested in

anyway im sounding like a whiner so i'll just leave it at that

Ayatollah Colm Meaney (Princess TamTam), Sunday, 3 July 2011 04:57 (thirteen years ago)

strongly considered MGS2 because raiden was such a masterful troll on the gaming community, and also for this:

If you'd asked in 2002 I'd almost definitely have gone for GTA3 but yeah, the fact its sequels fixed its flaws has made it a slog to play now. Fond memories of Ico, but I never finished it and have never gone back to it, not sure how it stands up really. I spent a lot of happy time with Project Gotham Racing. Might give my vote to Tony Hawk 3 though - played that for maybe 6 or 8 months solidly, and it had a really well balanced difficulty curve which kept me interested and challenged all the way through. Can't think of many games where hitting 100% gave me such a sense of achievement.

JimD, Sunday, 3 July 2011 10:04 (thirteen years ago)

I voted for GTA3 because it gave me the most unadulterated joy but Lamp is otm about Civ 3. Never got fully drawn in to Ico, can't help but feel its tweemo-ness gets it a little more kudos than it deserves, but wouldn't deny it was a solid game. Never been much interested in a lot of the rest and the ones I've played aren't classics in my head.

SB OK (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 3 July 2011 12:48 (thirteen years ago)

Lamp was also right about 'Capcom vs. SNK 2' being an nice extra addition. I might of voted for that one

Muttley vs. Mumbly (CaptainLorax), Sunday, 3 July 2011 21:45 (thirteen years ago)

i don't think i can even bring myself to want to vote for any of these

thomp, Sunday, 3 July 2011 23:01 (thirteen years ago)

golden sun, dunno that game just hit the spot.

Darranzhi MacKhakhala (darraghmac), Sunday, 3 July 2011 23:14 (thirteen years ago)

would vote for max payne if i didnt still have PTSD from the fucking screaming baby blood trail levels

lemon kerrang! (jjjusten), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 16:45 (thirteen years ago)

This was my senior year of college so I didnt play any of these games except civ3. Pretty impressive list of games I completely missed..

strongly recommend. unless you're a bitch (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 20:46 (thirteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Sunday, 10 July 2011 23:01 (thirteen years ago)

quite predictably i went with gta3.

The only other possible contenders for me would be zelda oracle games, silent hill 2, and maybe at a push Ico. but none come anywhere near the wow factor i got from when i first saw gta3.

Ste, Monday, 11 July 2011 13:20 (thirteen years ago)

this was a year when i didn't game.

HOOBASTANK is my co-pilot (DJP), Monday, 11 July 2011 22:16 (thirteen years ago)

lol black & white. not sure if just my interest in games peaked this year or if games did :( went with mgs 2 but it's a tough one.

sonderangerbot, Monday, 11 July 2011 22:44 (thirteen years ago)

the popularity of zone of the enders totally mystifies me

it came with a demo of mgs2 iirc?

sonderangerbot, Monday, 11 July 2011 22:45 (thirteen years ago)

zone of the enders was one of my first ps2 games for exactly that reason

it was a bad game, but i was still wowed by it at the time

Everyday is a Whining Choad (Noodle Vague), Monday, 11 July 2011 23:52 (thirteen years ago)

Ico 3
Super Monkey Ball 3

This is hardcore challop material though.

JimD, Tuesday, 12 July 2011 01:14 (thirteen years ago)

I never owned a PS2 so never played Ico. Looking forward to it when the HD collection is released.
