Embracing shame: BULLETSTORM is stupid as hell and also awesome

Like it really is a special kind of dumb, but holleee shit is it fun to play - hated the demo but got enough recomendations from peeps that i decided to give it a whirl, and it is infinitely better than the demo would have you believe. prob the first time in idk how many years where the single player in a straight up FPS might be the best part of the game.

Hmm, really? I decided against this on the basis of the demo too. What's different about the full game?

there just seems like theres a million things to do, the pacing is really well done, and they kinda throw curveballs throughout - like once you kinda get in the zone with the whole leash and kick thing they throw in enemies that cant get leashed and you have to figure out how to slide kick them or shoot them in the legs so they are slower. the weapons are all pretty unique too, and the environmental hazards are super varied (dont worry, there are red explosive barrels). Looks fantastic as well. I'm about halfway through but I can totally imagine taking a second run at it after i am done.

to be clear, its 100% on rails, theres little (maybe no) choice given to you other than "i think instead of kicksliding that dude and then shooting him in the throat i will leash him and kick him into this huge grinder wheel over here".

i think the thing that turned me off about the demo is that it made it seem v much like "the club" where you are just insanely overpowered and mowing through fields of dudes as fast as possible, but that strategy doesnt really work all that well. oh and also the smartest thing of all is that the points you get from unique kill stuff is the currency you use to upgrade guns and get ammo, so at a certain point you really need to try to come up with trickier ways to do stuff or you will just run out of options.

just finished the single player and while it does fall off a bit at the end because there are just kind of so many ways to murder people i guess, it was a great time straight through. its kinda madworld all glossed up and bereft of motion controls - the biggest thing (which i mentioned above) is that they just keep throwing surprises at you long after most games just go with the "make the bosses bigger" solution to level design. hands down the best FPS ive played in years, partly because it really doesnt feel like a fps, it keeps switching gears on you and your goals - i mean if you played it like a straight up shooter it would be probably just mediocre, but trying to line up ways to shoot a dude with an exploding bullet and then guide him into a bunch of his buddys and then knock them all into a vent fan while you detonate changes it all up a bit. its a great great game.

also in the smart category, the whole game is also sliced into a second game mode called echoes, where each stage is available for pure point scoring purposes with online leaderboards, which makes for huge replay value imo. plus theres some sort of multiplayer mode but i have havent bothered with that because i hate strangers.

oh yeah also, its one of the prettiest brightest FPS things ive ever played, theres very little tunnel running and lots of overgrown lush busted neon cityscapes to run around in.
