Portable Indecision

So I'm heading out on the road (actually going to be out of town a few times over the next several months for various reasons) and I want to pick up a new portable game - I'm just not sure which. Would love to hear some opinions on which of these new ones I should pick up...

Contra 4?
Ninja Gaiden DS?
God of War: Chains of Olympus?
Patapon?

Or something else entirely? I'll admit, I'm more attracted to the psp games, but I hate that things lack of battery life - so I'm being pushed towards the ds stuff (don't really want to carry both).

Haven't played the other three, so I am highly biased, but c'mon man, Contra.

My one concern with Contra 4 was that stuff that fell in the crack between the dual screens - I was afraid that might get too frustrating?

I was also curious - how does Contra 1 play on there - I assume it's just on one small screen?

have you played:

advance wars (any of them)
castlevania(s) DS
zelda ds
mario & luigi partners in time

oh wait do you want a new new game?

The stuff in the crack does get kinda frustrating (especially in the vertical stages) but I eventually got over it. Contra 1 is just played on one screen.

Contra 4 is great but fucking hard. New Advance Wars is sweet.

Surely you should be playing Geometry Wars Galaxies, Jeff? I've not tried it yet but intend to, in the next day or two.

Well, I picked up Contra 4 this morning and it gave it a go. I like it, in a way, but now I'm thinking adding that level of frustration to waiting around airports and riding trains may not be the best idea. So now I'm considering picking up the portable version of Hot Shots Golf or maybe the latest portable FIFA or PES. Has anybody on here played either those?

Jim, it's funny that you mentioned Geometry Wars Galaxies because when I saw it at the store this morning I definitely thought about it. The thing is, I tried the downloadable version that comes with the wii game (downloads to ds) and I couldn't get the hang of the controls (though I didn't give it much of a shot). My first impressions were very negative, but later I heard from other people who had no problem with the controls and seemed to enjoy it - so i don't know. Would love to hear your take after you try it out...

I haven't played the DS version. But what was it about the controls that gave you trouble? I'd say give it another 30 minutes or so, it's definitely worth it.

Just wanted to pop in here to say that I picked up Hot Shots Golf Open Tee off the PSN store. This was my first time downloading a game directly to my psp and it worked great, a little confusing the first time, but actually quite easy, and I'm glad I decided to give it a try. Not having to cart around a UMD of the game is also nice, as is being able to play a full game without having to listen to the UMD spin. Also the download version of the game only cost eleven dollars as opposed to twenty dollars for the UMD. And from what I understand, since the game is loading directly from the memory card, the psp doesn't have to use as much juice, so I should see a little longer battery life. Hopefully they'll be adding more games up there soon (right now there are only ten or so - the only other one which looks good, I already own on disc), as it would be cool to have a good selection of games on the memory card for these trips to switch between.

"Shiren" got good reviews.
That's the kind of thing that almost makes me want a DS again but WHERE IS THE TIME

El Tomboto, Saturday, 5 April 2008 07:54 (seventeen years ago)

I'm really surprised that Shiren got so much hype. Not saying it's not a good game, because it definitely is, but generally stuff that is old school super-hardcore unforgiving action like that doesn't get hyped up. Then again Etrian Odyssey got some hype last year, too, so who knows...

(I consider Contra IV a special case, since it appeals to a certain massive nostalgia for that series, the same way New SMB did. Shiren, OTOH, is basically a straight port of a 13-year-old SFC game that never came over here since the genre is generally ignored on consoles.)

There really are just too many good games on the DS to play through. I still have Phoenix Wright 3 unopened, gotta get through that before I can get Advance Wars, or Layton, or Shiren, or PW 4...

Patapon looks great, and hugely addictive, from what I've seen of it. I've had 'pata pata pata pon' stuck in my head since I saw a review on gamer.tv. Shame there isn't a DS version :(

I REALLY liked Etrian Odyssey as a good commute time-waster. II comes out soon, I am hyped!
