Anybody else planning to pick this up this week? Or already have it (40 Euro (ouch!) / 25 pound versions)? There's no way to just race your "friends" online right? Is there a split-screen mode?
Anyhow, I'm really looking forward to it - I like the idea of a smaller, more manageable Gran Turismo, even though I'd rather have the full release, obviously. I think I'm just going to download it, rather than buy the retail version (I wonder how long that download will take)...

nah, it's pretty boring.

Warhawk is a pretty bad game - I'm mystified at the love it gets from some people. I truly wish I hadn't downloaded it (in fact I recently deleted it off my system and I'm trying to forget). It's a shame, because visually, it's really nice, and I really liked the maps they made, it's just that the actually gameplay stinks, especially on foot. It's just one of those shooters where you have to hit the other fellow a ton of times and it's really hard to aim - so you got a bunch of floaty guys jumping all over the place, shooting and shooting and shooting until one or the other goes down (getting up close and flailing with your knife is one of the best ways to get kills, actually). The stuff in planes works a little better - the dogfight stuff - but I didn't find those types of games fun enough to go back to (trying to lock onto somebody and shoot your missles or dodge missles shot at you once you hear the lock on sound). There's just so many games that do similiar things to Warhawk, but that play sooo much better - there's really no good reason to play it.

Hung around the local store tonight where it was supposedly on the way, but I eventually gave up. Played Trackmania all night instead - I guess about as far from GT as you can get while playing a game that still takes place while driving cars

saw it at the store, today. decided not to buy it. racing games are boring.

As a demo, I'm really enjoying it... makes me really want the full game, but unfortunately that's at least a year away from being released (actually I would guess it won't be out until late 2009). There's still work to do, especially in the implementation of the online multiplayer, which is kind of broken. I can't tell if the problem is lag, or bad code, or that people don't know how to drive, or that people are just driving like assholes for laughs - but rarely does a race go smoothly & most of the times, other driver's cars don't move around the tracks correctly - they're always kind of jumpy, which makes cleanly passing all the more difficult. No party system or being able to set up your own races means you're always racing against different random people, which means, almost every race is fucked up somehow. Worst of all is the penalty system - if somebody crashes into you, you get a penalty - which makes no sense and is just frustrating as hell. Hopefully the online stuff will get tightened up by the time the real game comes out.
On the other hand - the solo stuff that I've done (all the C class races and some of the B) has been really smooth. For the most part, the tracks look really nice, and the computer controlled cars seem better than in previous games - I've seen them spin and out make the occasional mistake instead of just running in a circle. Only six tracks in here - which isn't enough, but there are tons and tons of cars. It seems easier to earn money and win races than in the previous game too - especially since the credits you earn online transfer over. The menu system is really nice too - much better than GT4 - very clean - very perfect. Best of all though is just the feel - it really feels like you're driving. Considering the game is really only a demo, I expect to be playing it a lot

This game is pretty awesome. I think I may buy it eventually ( I rented it ), but not until after GTAIV.
It really is an astoundingly smooth and pretty game. I noticed no lag whatsoever in the game play (PS3 offline) but the computer cars thus far have offered no competition whatsoever. I expect this will change soon.
On a side note, its the first racing game that I have the pleasure of driving my own car. This will change soon, however, as I beat a good number of the Class C races this morning, and I only have a VW GTI MkV, not the Audi R8. Poor, poor me.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through the A class events now - yeah, it's all about having the right car - if you have a good car and don't do anything stupid, you will be able to win or at least place in all the events, especially the C and B events. Maybe A events get tougher, since you may not be used to driving at the higher speeds - it's not so much the other cars that are the challenge, but your own skills with sticking on the track? Also the races stretch out longer to five laps, which gives you more chances to slip up on your concentration.
You can definitely find a lot more challenge online racing real people (lots of "dirty" or possible just awful drivers), latency problems and some weird visual stuff that's probably lag related. I'm finding it fun though. Need to finish the A events so I can get out of the "beginner" online races. Just got the Ford GT 06 which is a monster to race

i got this with my ps3 yesterday, man is it dull.
It's barely any different to GT3 on the playstation 2 in terms of gameplay.
massive zzzzzzzzzzzzz, bring on gtaiv
― Ste, Monday, 28 April 2008 01:05 (seventeen years ago)
they should let the cars shoot rockets in the next one?
― webber, Monday, 28 April 2008 02:59 (seventeen years ago)
maybe even think about not making the game in the first place, would be a better suggestion.
― Ste, Monday, 28 April 2008 08:15 (seventeen years ago)
Ste - you should maybe give it one more whirl when you get your new tv - in a lot of ways, each new game is really about the improvements in the graphics - which, at least for me, makes the game a lot more immersive (I didn't play a GT game though until GT4). If you're playing in standard def, maybe it doesn't look too much different than the earlier versions? so you loose out on that?
But I can see where you coming from about boring - it's a simulator really - and I know lots of people find that kind of gameplay boring. Some of us appreciate that quality though - I mean, I enjoy Microsoft Flight Simulator X & am looking forward to their new train simulator too! Once you get to the Class A stuff though in GT5P, the driving gets pretty challenging & you're in more powerful race cars instead of Hondas - one might find it more fun, since you don't get to drive cars like that in real life (well, maybe you do).
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 28 April 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, i'll try it again when I'm hooked up to HD mode.
I really loved the first game, and even completed it which is rare for me.
― Ste, Monday, 28 April 2008 22:06 (seventeen years ago)
i loved GT1 as well but yeah it's basically been the same game since then - not that i'm complaining but i've kinda been there, done that, failed all those driving tests already
― Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 10:13 (seventeen years ago)
the licence tests were pretty much the most exciting part of gt1, and gt5 prologue doesn't have any.
― Ste, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 13:01 (seventeen years ago)
and yes it does indeed look a lot more glorious now in HD mode, but unfortunately the gameplay remains the same.
― Ste, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 10:37 (seventeen years ago)
the licence tests were pretty much the most exciting part of gt1
it's true!
have subsequent versions retained the "endurance" race? i recall spending something like three hours with some Castrol-branded GT car, lapping my competitors like 10 times each, also the prize for that was utterly disappointing IIRC
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 13:32 (seventeen years ago)
Castrol-branded GT car,
OMG same here!
― Ste, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 14:32 (seventeen years ago)
was it the Supra?
I remember telling my mates that I'd won the endurance race and they were all 'WOW NO WAI'
― Ste, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 14:33 (seventeen years ago)
and i did in fact jump all over my bed when i managed the final Gold in all the licence tests.
― Ste, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 14:34 (seventeen years ago)
"Supra" rings a bell, it was green and looked cool as hell - the reward was just so lame, you should basically win the game after that
i felt like the kid in "A Christmas Story" when he finally decodes the message on his Ovaltine
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 17:03 (seventeen years ago)
After playing GT4 a load last night, I've decided the one thing that might persuade me to buy a PS3 (more than the GTAIV thread even) is - do convertible cars in GT5 still run around with crappy roofs on when you're racing?
― Bocken Social Scene, Friday, 9 May 2008 10:19 (seventeen years ago)
The graphics and controls in this game are really stunning. Have been playing a little more recently (after getting the game back from a friend), and it's just so much more fun to play this than any other semi-sim racing game I have. One wishes there was more to it than 6 tracks. Hopefully the rumors of a full release in 2009 are true. Again - such an amazing looking game.
