I've been playing this for the last week or so, I guess I'm about two thirds of the way through now. And it's completely adorable! Cute story, lovely atmosphere, fun puzzles at just the right level of difficulty, and (I'd assume) a very broad range of appeal: I can totally imagine nintendo's target DS audience of fifty-somethings digging it, and yet I keep thinking about how perfect it would've been for me when I was a precocious 9 year old too. Apparently it's going to be a trilogy, part two (and maybe even three?) out already in japan.

Anyone else had a go? I totally recommend it.

(Oh, some of the voice acting is terrible though).

I almost started a thread on this and then refrained from it, dunno why. Yeah, it's a fun game to play, completely agree with you on the atmosphere and the cute story. The puzzles are good fun too, though some can be a bit hard. I also feel that there are far too many hint coins but that could also be because I have a tendency of going on the web to check for the hints - and sometimes the answer cause some puzzles are quite hard (or at least they look hard when played late at night ... but those I'm keeping for when I have some time to waste). I also really enjoy the little videos you get once in a while. This game will have 0 replay value though, so there being two other games coming out could be nice. I'm about two-thirds of the way in too so if I still enjoy this game when I'm done with it, I might go for parts 2/3 whenever they come out.
Also, hi ILG, long time reader/ first time poster (I think)

Also, I kinda disagree about the voice acting. Well not really, it is quite terrible but it has an awkward charm of its own

Jibe, Monday, 21 April 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

Oh I love this, I can't do the last bloody puzzle though (the final "rescue the princess" one in the bonus section).

limón, Monday, 21 April 2008 17:26 (seventeen years ago)

OTM, I also cannot do the last puzzle.

I can't believe this didn't get a thread sooner, one of the best games of the year. I love the voice acting, reminds me a lot of those weird French-ish dubbed animes from the 80s.

the art direction is incredibly pretty but the bottom line is that I am way too stupid for games like this.

jamescobo, Monday, 21 April 2008 19:02 (seventeen years ago)

the final "rescue the princess" one in the bonus section

this is the only one i couldn't do either.

zappi, Monday, 21 April 2008 19:20 (seventeen years ago)

That puzzle is also in Lufia 2, not to mention every book of puzzles ever. Honestly the game is full of chestnuts. I was hoping for something more original.

last panel is pointless

abanana, Monday, 21 April 2008 23:50 (seventeen years ago)

swearing is never pointless

Girlfriend beat this in less than a week and I sorta lost interest.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

I solved half these puzzles from '2347 Classic Riddles' type books as a child, but I forgot most of them, so. Fun then.

I kind of have a crush on Layton.

Abbott, Friday, 25 April 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

I have an anti-crush on his assistant, little turd that he is.

Finished the main story a few days ago, haven't felt compelled to go and do the bonus puzzles or anything yet, which surprises me really because I thought I was really enjoying it and would want more after it ended. Then again, this might change next time I need to make a train journey (which will be later this week).

two months pass...

I like this game a lot, but why is the first "hint" you get always so useless?

Puzzle about numbers:

"Try thinking about the relationships of the numbers to their surroundings"

Oooooooh, THAT's it.

Z S, Sunday, 20 July 2008 02:49 (seventeen years ago)

Level 5 did this, didn't they?

kingfish, Sunday, 20 July 2008 07:18 (seventeen years ago)

Yep.

Z S, Sunday, 20 July 2008 07:29 (seventeen years ago)

Yep, the first hint is definitely quite useless.

Also, some of those matchstick puzzles are annoyingly exact.

Still, this game is just so damn charming. Oh, that dandy Layton!

Nhex, Sunday, 3 August 2008 01:17 (seventeen years ago)

is this out in the UK? i can't find it

thomp, Sunday, 3 August 2008 09:50 (seventeen years ago)

The moving blocks around puzles are so satisfying.

Amateur Darraghmatics (darraghmac), Monday, 24 August 2009 14:00 (sixteen years ago)

I played through the first one last month and loved it though it kinda lagged near the end; prob. I should have taken longer than a week to play it but I couldn't get enough for a while. The end of the story of the first one was kinda pervy, no? what with the interaction between Layton and Flora...when he pulled the chain off her neck it kinda took my breath away, like uhhh what is he going for there?

afternoon "delight" (Euler), Monday, 24 August 2009 14:03 (sixteen years ago)

about twelve puzzles in... feels a bit less charming this time around.

Professor Gayton and the bi-curious village people.

only kidding this looks cool, had to give my friend his DS back so he could play it. I'd borrowed it mainly to play the original but it was the only ROM on his DS that didn't work :(

123456789 (jim), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 23:19 (sixteen years ago)

eight months pass...

I saw this today. It had some pretty funny moments, some of them due to the subtitles rather than the film itself (ie Layton referring to himself numerous times as 'British gentleman'), but overall was pretty much as you'd expect: just like the games, only in movie format. You can even play along with the various puzzles throughout the story. Was pretty good fun.

Level 5 has recently stated that they wish to release a Professor Layton movie every winter
