might check it out if i get a moment but good god that reviewer is an irritating cock, sounds like he's right out of qvc. "you can have all this ethereal gameplay for not 29.99, not 19.99, just 9.99, that's right 9.99! call now with your credit card details!"
― ledge, Thursday, 8 March 2012 10:50 (thirteen years ago)
is this actually good because i dont trust reviews tbh

nor does fascinating multiplayer concepts

i'm hella busy for the next few days but I really do wanna play morehere's the thing: it is NOT drastically different than Flower. It's just better looking, more ingeniously designed and there's a Demons' Souls style multiplayer element. So it's almost intrinsically not the most interesting game. The puzzles I beat were fairly easy and logical and not taxing. But simple and fun and good to beat with a new voiceless friend. So if you want a great game, this probably isn't it. But as an interesting EXPERIENCE this is a must play.
― Pup Shalom Dog Costume (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)
not a motion controlled game though, right? (Fuck a Flower motion control shit)
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:57 (thirteen years ago)
It's either motion controlled or thumbstick. Or you can kinda do both. it's a vast improvement
― Pup Shalom Dog Costume (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 8 March 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)
phew!
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 8 March 2012 19:03 (thirteen years ago)
I am not gonna lie, I would be more interested in this game if it the soundtrack was "Lights" and "Separate Ways"

This was fun! Absolutely beautiful, one of the best co-op experiences ever and engaging enough to warrant occasional revisits. Incredibly short, but worked well as something to play in one sitting. 2 hours or so.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 16 March 2012 18:46 (thirteen years ago)
holy poop, fun experience
gonna say it got *slightly* monotonous - yeah, even within it's near abysmal 2hr timespan - but there were certain moments where i couldn't believe how beautiful the games shots were, and the fact that it was interactive made it seem so, so, so much more engaging. $15 was something i wasn't easily willing to part with but i couldn't imagine this dropping in price within the next 4 months so it was a very 'fuck it' purchase, one that definitely made my decision to stay home this friday night much more worth it
i tagged along with a dude for near the entire game but think i glitched during the mountains & carpets end-game scenario where i flew entirely off to the side and started cascading down mountains that never were intentioned to be anything but backdrop. funny thing was, i tagged along with this guy near the *entire* time, almost never lost him.... when the game ended did it tell me that i had actually spent all that time with 5 dudes O_o

the parts nearer the end where you have to suffer and then are redeemed are really really effective

the multiplayer buddy system is rly clever
― hang son doong (am0n), Sunday, 2 February 2014 04:30 (eleven years ago)
a friend introduced me to this last night. the scenes where the spirits slowly teach you your heritage, the history of the ruins you're travelling through... those are miraculous. and I actually even kind of teared up during the redemption part. I didn't know exactly what I was waiting for, but ever since the game industry eclipsed the film industry, I was waiting for a game like this.
living inside a studio ghibli film is actually a pretty good description, but this is maybe a little more abstract
first video game I've played in ten years, last one was katamari damacy. surprised thread is so short, this strikes me as some kind of landmark game

capture of the first 20 minutes for anyone who hasn't seen it. skipping through this again this morning definitely underlines how re-enforced the game play narrative is; no forking paths, all the imagery simply leads you towards doing the obvious thing. I know other games put a lot more variables into play that influence potential narratives while this game only has the one. but simply having this imagery available from a POV shot is incredible, and reducing the game play time to 2-3 hours feels like an innovation at this point; the standard 30-100 hour game play span that's become the standard is exactly what keeps me the hell away from checking out most of these things
― Milton Parker, Thursday, 20 February 2014 19:51 (eleven years ago)
are you referring to the scenes in between areas where its like a 2-d pictograph being lit up? i thought those were beautiful but i couldn't make any sense out of them. i've been meaning to play it through again to see if i pick up on things i missed the first time.
its weakness as a game is that there's not rly any "game" to it (in the traditional sense), which i'm fine with but in the grand scheme is prob considered a big knock against it
― hang son doong (am0n), Thursday, 20 February 2014 19:54 (eleven years ago)
also you might like ICO if you're looking for other things like this
― hang son doong (am0n), Thursday, 20 February 2014 19:56 (eleven years ago)
NOOOOOOOOOOOO!
ICO controls like a flaming turd in a broken shopping cart. Which is a shame, as it's pretty and thoughtful and yet a fucking chore.
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 20 February 2014 20:04 (eleven years ago)
similar atmosphere-wise, desolate, minimal soundtrack. but i withdraw the recommendation. controls do suck and the buddy system in it is forced and kind of annoying
― hang son doong (am0n), Thursday, 20 February 2014 20:10 (eleven years ago)
Back in my day we played games with bad controls AND WE LIKED IT
― polyphonic, Thursday, 20 February 2014 20:12 (eleven years ago)
most interesting thing about Journey is the restrictions put on communicating with random strangers that you meet. 90% of the game though is pushing forward on the joystick, after a while i was wondering why even bother doing that, just put it on rails. read an article where someone described games like these that push you forward along a tunnel as "content tourism".
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 20 February 2014 20:13 (eleven years ago)
xxxpost If not Ico then Shadow of the Colossus. Or the other stuff on the Journey disc (e.g. Flower), which is all nice.
I've only played a half hour or so of this so far (new to PS3 and Skyrim has sunk its tendrils into me, not to mention the other dozen odd games I've already accumulated) but it's really nice. This and Flower (and Doki Doki Universe, to an extent) are the only things my "not really a game person" GF has gotten into at all.
― Surprise, It's My Butt (Old Lunch), Thursday, 20 February 2014 20:17 (eleven years ago)
forgot about flower, haven't tried that yet
― hang son doong (am0n), Thursday, 20 February 2014 20:35 (eleven years ago)
I'm definitely not a game person so I'm probably less aware of the last ten years' worth of innovations. but whenever I did hear about a game like Bioshock, I'd be impressed by the rendering, the implementation of the art design, the music, the sophistication of the world-building, but still left completely cold and unwilling to pick up the controller. it's the people who normally don't play games that need to see this thing in action.
the "content tourism" charge definitely fits Journey a bit. I started playing it a lot more efficiently once you learn to stop moving the left joystick for motion at all, and just keep it pushed twelve o'clock at all times while using the point-of-view camera angle right joystick to 'steer'. Your left hand would be pointless, but some of the most beautiful sections of the game happen when you stand in place and just stare at things and sweep the camera around. I hadn't realized real time rendering had gotten quite this beautiful.
Scanned through bits of a youtube play throughs of Flow and Flower. What in hell!
― Milton Parker, Friday, 21 February 2014 00:39 (eleven years ago)
This did remind me a shitload of Ico/Shadow, in that you're a tiny dude picking amongst the ruins and having to surmount problems of a cyclopean scale
