Anyone played this yet?

I dig the end of season le mans race option, even if I'm left for dead on the track for most of the race.

some will argue it lacks realism in it's driving system, but it's bags of fun - particularly driving the formula 1000's with the in-car view.

I bought it

***LOVE*** drifting. love, and am pretty decent at, the muscle car stuff, and road races in general (although touge is pretty damn tough). Don't dig and am bad at the proper racetrack events. The le mans race is my worst nightmare.

why unrealistic? (i never drive these cars at these speeds so don't know what i should expect.)

the instant replay feature is brilliant, especially the way your replays are limited - but it's kind of undermined by the fact that you can restart a race as many times as you like, which i've been relying on too much.

ledge, Sunday, 8 June 2008 02:00 (seventeen years ago)

oh i love just doing that rewind shit on my crashes, it's so surreal.

The radio commentary is fantastic, it's great how they tell you who is doing what on a race, sometimes in a tone like you're supposed to know who the hell they are. "Donny Taylor just span out". OH NO NOT DONNY!, haha.

Ste, Sunday, 8 June 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

and my biggest rival currently is, den dun daaah, my teammate!

Ste, Sunday, 8 June 2008 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

Man that commentator is such a douche. "Smooth passing!" after I've just t-boned some poor guy. Or "you've just moved into fourth place!" when I've been there for a whole lap already.

Just noticed pro-mode, which doesn't let you replay from the pause menu. But I don't think I'm ready for it yet :)

ledge, Sunday, 8 June 2008 21:12 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, or telling you about an accident that you've already just ploughed through.
Saying that, trying to avoid other computer driver crashes at breakneck speed is pretty damn exciting.

But god i so sucked on this today, could barely muster a race without coming last.

I'm so psychologically pissed sometimes when it comes to race game. As soon as I get into first place I just start sweating madly and lose concentration, and usually performing the most horrendous accident ever.

four weeks pass...

This game is horrible, mainly because the cars control like complete shit, slipping and sliding all over the track.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 3 December 2008 02:15 (sixteen years ago)

I just threw this game in the garbage. Feeling a lot better now :)

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 3 December 2008 03:54 (sixteen years ago)

I thought it was great, a lot more fun than any other racing game i've tried on the ps3.

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Wednesday, 3 December 2008 09:16 (sixteen years ago)

yeah only played the demo but really liked it - should have gootne that one instead of Midnight Club

were you playing this with the wheel, jeff?

ⓒⓞⓩⓦⓝ (cozwn), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 01:13 (sixteen years ago)

I tried to.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 02:15 (sixteen years ago)

I can see why that'd be tricky; the cars are pretty slippy, and a lot of them don't seem to have much 'weight'

however, gotta disagree with you on this one, this game is heaps of fun; gorgeous, the tracks are great with some really nice sections, the cars all feel different, lots of fun modes, and a deep enough career system for an arcade racer

also feels very fast

cozwn, Thursday, 1 January 2009 14:36 (sixteen years ago)

REALLY feeling the career mode in this now, deep and long without being too complex

also the actual, y'know, racing in this is heaps of fun

cozwn, Thursday, 1 January 2009 16:06 (sixteen years ago)

I did try it with a stick too. I see the game has made a lot of top ten lists, so obviously people liked it, but yeah, I probably hated this game like no other I played this year - which is weird, because I really enjoy DiRT, the previous game from the same company. But even with a stick I just couldn't get used to the slippy way the vehicles handle and bounced off things all crazy. For me it hit a weird middle ground, maybe not arcade enough to be that kind of fun and not sim enough to control right and prvide challenging, precise fun racing. I also hated the nickname thing. I heard other people describe their problem with the game in regards to the handling that it didn't feel like you were turning the cars by turning the wheels, but that the cars turned around a pole driven through their middle? It just seems to me that there are so many other better driving game options out there right now, even on console. I would specifically mention Forza 2, PGR 4, DiRT and obviously Gran Turismo. The upcoming Race Pro from Simbim is also promising (out in mid-feb).

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 1 January 2009 18:30 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, I'd really like to try PGR4; DiRT I've heard mixed things about

forza 2 I couldn't get with (never was an avid GT fan either) because I didn't find the racing all that much fun or fast : /

cozwn, Thursday, 1 January 2009 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

cozwn did you ever get up to the fast cars in forza? They're pretty fucking quick. I like the racing in forza a lot more than gt, because at least forza has body damage.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 1 January 2009 18:45 (sixteen years ago)

Forza definitely gets really fast when you get fast cars, but yeah, it's a more technical racer.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 1 January 2009 18:46 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, I didn't get that far into forza, to be fair to it

that's funny about the body damage tho: I think GRID has one of the best, most meaningful, non-annoying body damage systems for a racing game I've played

take this all with a pinch of salt tho, I'm no massive racing fan but I know what I like : )

cozwn, Thursday, 1 January 2009 18:53 (sixteen years ago)

cozwn - if you find a cheap copy of DiRT you may want to try it out - after all, GRID uses the same engine (that's why everything has a sort of brown look in GRID, or so I've heard said). I feel like the handling works a lot better in DiRT, it feels really right for Rally / Off-Raod style races & I didn't have half the problems (I feel like the rewind feature was added to GRID to compensate for the shitty handling? maybe a little bit). Maybe the handling was tweaked in GRID? Both games have the exact same damadge system. DiRT has an even better menu system - the best I've ever come across in a racer - very clear and clean and easy to use. The one drag about DiRT was no real online play. I imagine it'll be in the 2nd game, supposedly out later this year.

wtf Dirt doesn't use the rumble pack on my controller. that sucks.

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Wednesday, 10 June 2009 08:24 (sixteen years ago)

i just CANNOT win the first stock car race on the US competition, on GRID

i think it's hight time i got a wheel for these games, anyone recommend a good one for ps3 ?

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Wednesday, 10 June 2009 12:45 (sixteen years ago)

I thought the stock car race was pretty easy, as long as you can get yerself in front and then not fuck up too bad. You've gotta be a bit lucky over the cross-ways jump i suppose.

NB this was the other save game I lost thanks to fucking microsoft's fucking memory fucking card fucking up. haven't been back to it since.

man saves ducklings from (ledge), Wednesday, 10 June 2009 12:50 (sixteen years ago)

i do well on the first track. but on the second circuit the other cars just fly off and i can never catch the leaders. and yeah that crossover grrrr

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Wednesday, 10 June 2009 13:03 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, they never patched rumble into the ps3 version of dirt. In regards to a wheel: I tried to play both of these games with my wheel and found it made them even harder - both are really designed with a controller in mind (especially grid). For other games I do have the (relatively) inexpensive Logitech Driving Force Pro which works with ps2/ps3 and also plays nice with PC recing games. Something to keep in mind - you do have to have some kind of a set up with an area you can clamp it to though. I'm definitely pro wheel if you can afford it as in general, it makes most racing games so much more fun and immersive.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 10 June 2009 15:05 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks Jeff.

I think I'd actually enjoy GT more with a wheel, and yeah know what you're saying about GRID and DIRT controller wise.
Although I remember having a cronically good time with the ps1 + colin mcrae + wheel.
